bicycle trip during Chinese Lunar New Year

Posted by mumpat on 13/11/2015 at 16:16

We are a retired couple (65 years) and we like long bicycle trips. In the past 3 years we biked Thailand, Laos , Cambodia and Vietnam. This year we wish to travel nine weeks (jan +feb) through South-Thailand and Malaysia. We are not obliged to a planned route, anyreservation or a predetermined program... we love freedom... The only thing which is fixed is our return-ticket from Kuala Lumpur to Belgium on 4 march ‘16.
We are a bit worried about the period around Chinese Lunar New Year. Is it celebrated as exuberant in Malaysia as it is in Vietnam? To what extent is turned upside normal life not only on the two official holidays (8 - 9 Feb) but also the days after?
My questions to the experts: Do you think it is possible to travel as we do during the period of Chinese New Year? Probably there will be less traffic (less risk) on the roads but I am worried whether we can always find a place to sleep. Should we deviate from our habits and book a guest house in advance?
thanks for any reply

Much depends on exactly where you will be as far as accommodation but I would say find somewhere and stay and enjoy the celebrations.

The really busy times on the roads are before and after
