Planning to travel to Malaysia

Posted by natmus23 on 23/11/2016 at 06:05

Hello everyone,

My boyfriend and me, we are planning to travel to Malaysia. I have been reading about safety a little bit and got scared because there is a high alert for terrorism attacks. What is your opinion on that? Did you feel safe in Malaysia? Would you advice against travelling to Malaysia?

Thank you, Natalia

The security considerations are in relation to one particular area of Malaysia, in Sabah specifically Semporna and Sipadan Island - you can read what we say about it below:

"When visiting the area, you may be alarmed by the security presence. Over the last few years, terrorist incidents have occurred, and in response the Malaysian government has established military and police posts on the islands and other tourist destinations. Most travellers enjoy the world class diving here without peril, however as with anywhere, check the current security situation with your government’s embassy before you plan and depart on a trip, and be sure to have comprehensive travel insurance." Where in Malaysia were you planning on travelling to?

I only visited the Malay peninsula but I felt as safe as anywhere in my home country, the Netherlands. The worst you'll have to worry about are standard big city issues in KL. I can't say anything on Borneo as I haven't been there.

In general I hope you won't let terrorism deter you from going, that is exactly what terrorism is aiming for. Just err on the safe side and avoid the few spots you're told to avoid and don't forget Malaysia is a very big country :)
