just planning an itinerary for 2018 and wondering if it makes sense to go to Kinabalu National Park if we don’t intend to climb the mountain.

If you are a nature lover, yes definitely. Beautiful trails and cool mountain air with and abundance of indigenous plant life including rare orchids and pitcher plants — not so many larger animals, but plenty of birds and insects. You could an easily fill a day or more. The entry fee also includes entry to Poring Hot Springs which also has some decent walks. Stay outside the park for better value accommodation.

On a somewhat related note, can one hike up part of the trail to Low's Peak without a pass?

Hi dfrank24,

On a somewhat related note, can one hike up part of the trail to Low's Peak without a pass?

Generally no, there are check gates at the start where you will need to show your pass, but in the past I have travelled with bird watchers who have talked their way in for a short hike up the trail. But this may have changed since the earthquake, just for safety reasons so they know who is on the mountain. However several other trails around the park don't require a pass, just the ticket entrance to the National Park. Some are short, but at least one is a little more challenging and you can easily fill a day hiking following a few. It is a beautiful park, and worth exploring. Enjoy.
