vigilance with belongings

Do you need to be on your guard much while in the Philippines, I've heard of a lot of people getting their belongings stolen ?
Any advice or experience on the matter ?

yes just like anywhere you visit , but generally Filipinos are kind honest and friendly but like anywhere there are opportunists and those that prey on tourists

In 12 trips to the Phils totaling about 18 months, I've never had anything stolen. I do know of 2 occasions bungalows were broken into, one was a inside job the other unknown. Once on Siargao island I was in a place without an inside slide bolt so I put a very heavy footstool against the door, in the morning it was pushed about 25cm from the door so someone did try but left before taking anything. I now take a small portable slide bolt that I can fit on most doors.
My point is practice basic security, the Philippines is no more likely than any other place.

@Jagman - curious on the portable slide bolt - how does that work?
