Beach In August: Andaman Coast vs. Gulf of Thailand

Posted by shaka317 on 4/5/2012 at 13:44

We want to spend a week at a beach in the middle of August. Looking for recommendations, please! Thinking about Ko Lanta but concerned about weather, transportation and what's open while there. Have heard it's beautiful regardless! Also considering Ko Pha Ngan in Gulf as an option but open to suggestions!
Finally, looking for advice on quality rain jackets for a week-long hike in Northern Thailand. THANKS!

In August it is best to stay away from the Andaman and head to the Gulf. Yes Lanta is beautiful, but many places are closed during the monsoon season.

I've spent Augusts in both areas, often in the same year. The Andaman usually gets enough sunshine and non-windy days for a good beach holiday, but the southern Gulf is always wat better.
Give me Phangan that time of year any time.
