Even though July is low season there will still be many tourists in Thailand during this time.
Only 5 days. When you say Thailand do you mean just Bangkok? Thailand is a big country and what you can see is limited by your short visit.
For some young tourists the Khao San Road area of Bangkok is popular. But if you might have some interest in nightlife and want to take advantage of the city rail transportation - the Sukhumvit Nana area is a good place for a hotel.
You will meet people on tours, in bars and pubs, in hotels and hostels, etc. But you can have a nice time doing "Thailand" on your own. Local travel agents and some hotels can set you up with tours with a day's notice.
Know what the visa requirements are for your country. Have a budget worked out so you know how much you can spend on a hotel if you will be asking for hotel advice.
Buy a travel guide and do some internet research on what to see in Thailand. Some basic information you need, besides hotels and visa, are currency, transportation from airport and scams.
