You can check out prices and times for buses here, then figure out if it's worth it, or not ...

Both routes offer choices of some 10-12 companies in 3-4 different class of bus, taking some 8-10 hrs, rpices range from 400-999 THB for each trip, and you have to cross BKK from Mochit to Sai Thai-though a very few on both routes also serve the other. 7500 THB is quite high for low-cost flites, can be done much better. For BKK-Surat train is a viable alternative too-with sleeper.

Thanks tilapia for the web site. Captain I thought it was bit much myself. I'll be taking the bus to Surat Thani in a couple of days but my visa runs out on 12th dec as I'll be in ko samui around that date I was wondering would Malaysia be my best bet for a border cross

A better bet would be Ranong . Make your way from Koh Samui to Surat. Take the Minibus to Ranong. The Bus leaves at 09:00 hrs approx. and needs 4 hours I suppose. When in Ranong Motodops are waiting already calling "Visa, Visa". You have to negotiate a price I suppose. When in doubt contact Mr. Pon's Travelagency. His adress/phonenumber can be found on Travelfish. Never did a Visarun myself, but a lot of people I know do it from there.
