agreed that the meter taxi is the best way to go. and by north america/western europe/anzac standards, the ride will be quite cheap. follow the signs to the meter taxi stand at the airport. they should give you a slip of paper with the number of the taxi on it as you board. remember that it is customary for the passenger to pay the tolls for the trip, and there is also something like a 50 baht surcharge for fares from the airport. and with all that, it is still the 300 to 400 baht or so to the city. quite a bargain. cheers.
I land in Bangkok DMK Airport at 3 a.m. on the 9th of Jan and stay 2 nights at Khao San Road (hotel already booked at Rambuttri). What is the cheapest way to reach the hotel as I have 4-5 hours on hand. Hotel wont give me my room before 10 a.m.

Last time I paid about 150 Bt (nite-no exway needed) from DMK to KSR by metertaxi. There are always ENORMous long Qs for taxi's at airport-with the usual 50 bt surcharge. Walk to busstop main road and there will be seevral waiting to go by meter and without the 50 bt.Orange shuttle bus A1 runs direct to Mochit/BTS for 30 bt/pp. train station is across the footbridge. normal trains are free for thai and 5 bt for farangies, 3d. cl only.

What you are saying that there is no extra night charge in Thailand? If I boarded a train then which train and where do I get off?

I've done this trip a few times and tried taxi which took ages. Last time I got the airport train link to Phaya Thai and taxi from there, much quicker and much, much cheaper. Insist on the cab driver using the meter though.
