South East Asia - Itinerary Feedback

Posted by cgamon on 1/1/2014 at 21:47

Hello, I am so excited to begin planning my trip to SE Asia. I have done some basic preliminary research and am beginning to draft my itinerary. I am trying to restrain from doing too many things but if it seems like I can comfortably fit more in, please let me know!

I really need feedback in terms of duration and best modes of travel between the locations. My time frame is about 30 days.

Thank you so much!

its all in any guidebook. Its also the tipical 13 in the dozen well-worn route without surprises. Only ''island'' dest to be reached from CMai by plane is Phuket
Apparently you are USA-so you also need to think about visa.

Siem Reap to Bangkok can only be done by train on the Thai side of the border. Take a shared taxi on the Cambodian side.
Read up on the islands a bit more, I think 10 days on just Phuket might get a bit boring. Check out Phi Phi, Lanta, Railay Beach, etc. See good summary here: https://www.travelfish.org/islands.php

Thank you so much for your suggestions!

I forgot to mention I plan to go late May/June.

And I don't plan to just go to Phuket (I will go to other islands)- I heard also Sumai side may be better in the season but not sure best way to go from Chaing Mai to Sumai (may have to go back to Bangkok first).

Samui is expensive to fly to and an expensive island. I would suggest skip Phuket and fly to Krabi or Trang.

Unless you like mega tourist areas.no need to visit phuket or samui.

I could spend 10 days in Phuket easily - maybe 3 in one of the big 3 beaches Kata/Karon/Patong - 3 near southern jewel beaches like Ya Nui, Nai Harn, Ao Sane (Google for Nai Harn and Rawai accommodation although the latter's beach is not worth writing home to mum about) - 3 in a much closer to Phuket island than Phi Phi (like Ko Racha/Coral Island/Ko Yao Noi/Ko Yao Yai) - and one in a nice close to the airport beach like Nai Yang, Nai Thon or Mai Khao.

But yeah, I kinda think for my first trip I would like to spread a bit further - 10 days based on a Phuket arrival suggests one of the above plus places Bob mentioned - Railay/Ao Nang in Krabi , Phi Phi and good ol' Lanta. If you want to shorten things a bit it is easy to return to Phuket after PP and Railay/Ao Nang via Yao Noi/Yai using Green Planet's speedboat service which can be booked anywhere in the Krabi area.
