Bus from Chiang Mai to Chiang Khong

Posted by ACattrall on 19/3/2014 at 02:40

Hi there

I'll be arriving in Chiang Mai on 23rd March at 17:00, and im heading to Luang Prabang on next day (24th March).

Does anyone know the following?
1) If there is any bus running from Chiang Mai (CM) to Chiang Khong (CK) after 6pm???
2) As I checked from the web there is a early morning bus running from CM to CK at 0800am, is it still correct???
Coz some web said that the bus is leavinig at 13:00??
3) If i catch the bus at 08:00 on 24th March to CK, is it possible for me to catch another bus at 17:00pm from Huay Xai to Laung Prabang on the same day???
4) Also heard there is a direct service from CM to Luang Prabang?? how much is it??

Since im flying from Bangkok to Mandalay (Myanmar) on 30th March, I dont have too much time to take the slow boat at Chiang Khong.
Anyone know the fastest and easiest way from Chiang Mai to Laung Prabang (except by flight ^o^)?
Is it possible for me to arrive Luang Prabang on 25th March??? So i could spend few whole days there....

Thanks a lot~

Not sure if bus after 18.00 but you might be more likely to pick up something from lampang via chiang Rai

chance of bus after 17.00 from Huay xai very low and not advisable if there is one

Time v/s cost is the equation bus slow plane fast, bus cheap plane not cheap

again someone confused by not reading a guidebook and trusting this www
1.there are 2 ways for CM-CK;
a. direct bus, which takes quite a long time due to indirect route and long stops en-route. There will be more as 1 bus/day.
b.via Chiang Rai and change-both legs at least hourly and often more.
In principle about all Thai intercity buses stop by dusk-around 18./19.00. Certainly in those rural areas.
2.apparently you either trust the train or fly into CM. Try to change: if train-bound, get off earlier and catch bus from there. If plane: fly into Chiang RAI.
@4. the Thai BoKoSo and some Lao comp DO have a daily through bus CM-LP, via this new bridge, and it lvs CM mornings- also about 8 or 9. MUST reserve before, takes nearly 22-24 hrs. Runs as fast as it can CM-CK-BOrderbridge (in fact this info was also widespread on www). About 800-1000 THB. is both the fastest and easiest overland.
Google for hobomaps- it has fairly uptodate info on its maps for Lao buses.
