Entire Mae Hong Son Loop by Public Transportation?

Posted by CKDexterHaven on 12/8/2017 at 11:50

How easy are the connections by bus or van to do all of the Mae Hong Son Loop? I do not want to drive a car or motorcycle and am not enthusiastic about engaging a private driver. Two of us are going to Soppong for 2 nights from Chiang Mai. The service that gets us there offers several trips back in the same direction. It's not clear from the posted itinerary how connections would line up to travel on. Also it's a lot longer trip. If it is a reliable option is there a good place to break up that part of the loop for another night? Thanks for any information and advice.

Yes it is possible.

You can take a van from Chiang Mai to Pai and then on to Soppong and then on to Mae Hong Son and from there a bus south to Mae Sariang and then either back to Chiang Mai by bur or further south to Mae Sot and so on.

Time wise, if doing by minibus/bus I'd allow for at least a night or so in each (Soppong, Mae Hong Son and Mae Sariang). If you can't allow that time, then I'd reconsider doing the loop and maybe see just Pai and a side trip to Chiang Dao perhaps.
