Khao Lak - Ko Surin - Similan Islands - Krabi Trip

Posted by blazvidmar on 26/10/2018 at 06:10

We would like to do this trip (in mid November):

- Start in Khao Lak
- [Day 1] - Ko Surin Snorkelling Daytrip, but instead of returning to Khao Lak we'd like to spend the night on Ko Surin.
- [Day 2] - In the morning transportation from Ko Surin to Similan Islands to join 2-days (maybe 3-days) Similan Islands snorkelling trip. Spend night(s) on Similan Islands.
- [Day 3] - Similan Islands and returning to land. Preferably Krabi (as we continue our trip there), but we don't mind returning to Khao Lak and then organising transportation to Krabi ourselves.

I've seen such trips (Ko Surin Daytrip, Similan Islands 2-days trip) at various agencies on web, but all trips start/end at land (Khao Lak). Is it possible to get transportation directly from Ko Surin to Similan Islands? Should we arrange such trip in advance via email (I've send few already but they are very unresponsive)? Or is it ok to arrange such trip one day before in Khao Lak?

No, there are no boats between Ko Surin and the Similans except for dive live-aboards. You will need to return to the mainland between them.

As far as we know, camping is no longer allowed on the Similans and it can only be visited on a day trip. Possibly that is changing for the coming high season -- not sure at the moment.

To reach these islands you'll need to book a tour, and you can arrange for the same company to pick you up from Ko Surin if spending a night. While the pier for Similans is located in Khao Lak , the pier for Ko Surin is located in Khuraburi , some 80 km north of Khao Lak. So, depending on where you're coming from, you may want to actually start in Ranong and catch a bus from there down to Khuraburi to arrange the Ko Surin trip locally -- that's how we've always visited in the past, not via Khao Lak (although day trips to Ko Surin are certainly sold in Khao Lak).

As far arranging tours / boat tickets in advance by email, I don't recommend it for these sorts of tours. You'll save money by just showing up in either Khuraburi or Khao Lak and arranging the tours through local travel agents face to face.
