Chiang Mai / Chiang Rai

Posted by mtbakerstu on 20/11/2018 at 10:45

So I'm headed to Chiang Mai next month. Told my dad, who said that he found Chiang Mai boring???

LOL. I'm not sure he knew how to hit it.

He did suggest that Chiang Rai is a more compelling place to go, though when he went it was on a travel restriction advisory of some sort, so he didn't get there.

Was wondering:

1. Is Chiang Rai an easy travel reach from Chiang Mai, (which will be my home base). If so, how far in time to travel?

2. Is Chiang Rai safe and worthwhile currently?

Thanks for any feedback.

Sure, Chiang Rai is safe and worthwhile. The provincial capital is okay, some nice temples and a good night market, but the province is best known for trekking, visiting the Lahu, Akha and other tribes, and natural attractions up in the mountains (Mae Salong, Doi Tung), as well as the Mekong River stretch (Chiang Khong, Chiang Saen, Golden Triangle).

Chiang Mai to Chiang Rai is a 4 hour bus ride. If there's time you could take the long way and stop in Chiang Dao, Fang (Doi Ang Khang is lovely) and/or Tha Ton (from there you could do a boat ride down to Chiang Rai on the Kok River).

You also may want to check out Nan province if heading out in this general direction.
