Posted by gecktrek on 2/10/2022 at 23:48

i'm planning on doing a loop of NE thailand by motorbike in november, the route at this stage is Udon Thani, Nong Khai, Nakhon Phanom, Mukdahan, Kalasin, Udon Thani.

would appreciate any advice, gems &/or tips for such a journey.

David wrote a couple of excellent itineraries for the northeast, that between them cover all the spots you mention except for Kalasin. You can see them here (if you haven’t already):

A month along the Mekong

Two weeks in the Northeast

Also, great to catch up while you were here in Bali!

Starting and ending in Udon Thani? Do you have connections there or is it just the best base for logistics?

I was in Udon and Nong Khai recently, but the only suggestion I have from that trip is to hang out at the markets around the Udon Thani train station, as I thought they were really great, with lots of activity, lots of variety, and awesome prices for good quality food and other stuff. Try the corn-based somtam available at the UD Town food market.

Depending on how much time you have and how long you plan to ride each day, I'd say stops in That Phanom (between NKP and Muk) and Bueng Kan (between Nong Khai and NKP) are worthwhile. They aren't busy, but I remember them as being friendly and right along nice sections of the river. Getting to Bueng Kan would mean following Route 212 along the river, however, which adds a fair distance to the trip, if you weren't already planning to go that way.

Have a great time and ride safe. I'd be interested to read about the journey if you feel like posting updates. Regards.
