plan from bangkok to the islands?

Posted by halongbay07 on 17/3/2009 at 23:27

im heading to thailand for the 1st time in september and plan to only stay in bangkok for 1 night before heding out to the islands, after reading up on here i definetly want to avoid phuket, koi sumi and any of the other heavily touristy & commercial islands.

so i would just like to know which route of bangkok people recommend to get to the best islands, im also thinking about going into cambodia to see angkor watt for a day or 2 if anyone has any thoughts on thats as well?

You might want to go to one of the islands in Trat Province (Chang, Wai, Mak, for example) on your way to or from Siem Reap. You could go to SR overland, then drop down to Phnom Penh, then Sihanoukville , then take the ferry to Koh Kong, then the bus or minivan to Trat. Once in Trat you've got your choice of islands to go to. The ferry from Koh Kong to Sihanoukville (or Sihanoukville to Koh Kong) is great!

You could do it the other way around, too, and stop at an island first.

Guess it all depends on how much time you have.

Perhaps not the best time of year to be going to an island in that area, though. You won't have to worry about it being very crowded then. You'd probably get much better weather on Pha Ngan or Tao. Less rain, anyway.

Good advice from Tilapia there, but in September Trat and Ko Chang will be pretty wet. Your best bet (weather wise) is Ko Samui, Ko Pha Ngan and Ko Tao -- yes they're touristy but so because they're pretty nice! Ko Samet is another, closer to Bangkok option.
