Travel with a iphone

Posted by peter61 on 28/11/2017 at 17:30

Hi Guys I have never before taken my phone while traveling but have seen many others with them and using the map apps which I'm thinking would be very handy. I am about to spend 6 weeks following the Mekon River from Southern China through Loas, Thailand , Cambodia and then into Vietnam. Do I need to get a sim card from every county or is there another way. Any advice would be appreciated.

There are loads of apps that do offline map access, so for that you wouldn't even need a local simcard. Since at least crappy wifi is more or less guaranteed at guesthouses/hostels/hotels nowadays you wouldn't need a databundle so that also is not a necessity for a simcard.

My last trip I bought one, but that was a 4 month trip in the same country so it added a lot of convenience. I probably wouldn't buy 4 simcards in 6 weeks though. You'll manage.

Maps.me and pocket earth are both frequently used offline map apps by the way.

Another vote for Maps.me - it is an excellent offline map viewer and I'd expect an ideal match for what you are planning to do.

Aside from maps, you'll need to get a sim card in each country as you go (unless you've got an amazing roaming package of course!)
