I'm planning my trip to Vietnam and now I also would like to go to tha Ha giang region. I'm travelling solo, so a private tour is just to expensive. Does anyone here know any group tour that is still affordable? I'm having a hard time finding one, andif I find one it doesn't run anymore or I don't get a reply on my emails.
Hope someone has experience travelling to Ha giang and knows a good tour.

You should have no problem doing that riding pillion with a local guide with a few $ to spare.
You can get a deal where you pay so much a day for the driver/bike and then pay expenses (gas, hotel, meals) for the pair of you.
Hotels are all about $10-11 a room. Food is very cheap.
You should be able to pick up a guide in Ha Giang. I shared a room with my guide/driver, but you can pay for two rooms if you're not happy doing that.
Ideally, you need a minimum of four or five days up there - more if you want to be hitting a few of the bigger markets,
You won't regret doing the trip. http://www.advrider.com/forums/showthread.php?t=495729 (Not my blog show what you'd miss...) A few of my photos from a week in 2011 https://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.1473575455017.43149.1702618813&l=41ad02dc3a&type=1
