South Vietnam and Laos

Posted by stevenjmartin on 27/3/2016 at 07:43

Hi all,

We have two weeks to spend in southern and middle Vietnam in July. I was wondering if anyone had any particular beach recommendations. We'd also consider going into Cambodia to beaches if there were recommended over those in Vietnam. We were reading that up to and including Hoi An will be good at this time of year - how bad will the weather be further north in Vietnam? Finally, there don't seem to be any low-cost flights to Luang Prabang from Saigon but we'd love to have a taste of Laos, however perhaps this is far too ambitious for this time of year and our time constraints?

Hi stevenjmartin,

July is a great time for central coast and north Vietnam. It's "summer" here, while it will be rainy season for beaches in the south (including Phu Quoc, Mui Ne, Vung Tau, Con Dao). So yes, check out beaches in Da Nang, Hoi An, Lang Co, Nha Trang, Whale Island, Cam Ranh.

It's definitely worth it to visit Luang Prabang, but I'd say only if you have least 3 days -- anything less and it's simply too short. You can get a direct flight from Hanoi with Vietnam Airlines. Low budget carriers have only just started to fly to Luang Prabang, right now the only cheapier is Thai Air Asia from Bangkok.

Hi,
2 weeks in Vietnam, you can visit around South of Vietnam or some places in North. Further, from HCMC you can catch bus to Luang Prang of Laos very easy.
Happy travels!

Sorry to contradict samatha but it is not easy at all. If you take a bus to Luang Prabang from anywhere in Vietnam (Dien Bien Phu, Hanoi, Sapa) it will be a long, hard journey and not recommendable if you are short on time. To add to the difficulty, if someone is travelling in July it will be rainy season. Roads in Northern Laos are prone to landslides.
