We are very experienced independent travelers in our 60's traveling for 6 weeks in VN and 1 +/- week in the NW. We would like to take the night train from Hanoi to Sapa and then on to Son La and Mai Chau before returning to Hanoi . Is this feasible by procuring our own travel arrangements or is a tour/guide necessary. Would buses or cars with drivers be best from town to town?
Also, is a guide essential to trek into the minority villages or could this be done on our own. Thanks,

Dear Mr Murph,

You can arrange your tour by yourself easily following these steps.
1, Booking online night train to Sapa , google can help you. The price should be around 400.000 VND for a deluxe cabin on the train ( very comfortable, free water, coffee during the journey )
2. Hotel : I recommend Sapa Moutain Hotel or Paradise View Sapa : Price around $40 per night ( depends on room type )
3. Small bus is recommended for this type of travelling.
4. A local guide is essential for trekking into the minority villages, it is better if you would sleep in their house ( homestay ) for a new experience.

Hi,
Night train from Hanoi to Sapa is best idea for you to travel which is safe. At 6:30am, every day, there is a bus from Son La to Lao Cai. It passes through Sapa. It arrives there around 3pm. The scenery is great, and the bus travels on sealed secondary roads through villages and small cities
Happy travels!

Hi,
As I know, taking a night train from Hanoi to Sapa is ideal. You could book tickets online with help of travel agent or you can search Google by yourself. Then you should visit ethnic minorities with a local guide. Because in some ethnic groups, they have their own customs and their supertitions. Or, if you travel by yourself, at least, please read travel guide carefully.
Have a good trip!
