We have just this morning returned from Sapa with the overnight train. Our hotel booked the train tickets which were with Oriental Impress. Going up to Sapa we had a 2 berth and coming back we had a 4 berth although there was only one other person with us. Train travel in Vietnam is not overly modern or comfortable. The train we had is a "tourist train" but it was very rough with lots of bumps and loud noises but it did run to the timetable. The berths are comfortable and clean although the "information ?" brochure was all in Vietnamese and the rail staff didn't seem to speak English or care either. Overall it was good although you don't get to see any countryside because it leaves late at night and arrives before sunrise.
