Halong Bay

Posted by wsaunders45 on 6/10/2016 at 10:56

We are a retired couple who wish to take a two night cruise in Halong Bay during January, 2017. We seek recommendations on the best company that is reasonably priced with whom to book. And should we make our booking prior to departure or in Hanoi? Thanks much.

Suggest you take a look at this page which includes reviews of a series of boats out of Ha Long. The midrange review with Alova may be of interest.

If you're after a specific boat and know what you want, then book it in advance, otherwise there is no need to book beforehand – especially at the budget end where there are dozens of operators with little to separate one from another.

This page shows the mid-priced cruises - this is one place where you want to splurge a little!

We used Mr Windy of AsiaPearl Travel and got the 3D2N trip on Glory Legend. Go for the upstairs cabins as you get a balcony. We paid $90 extra for the upstairs cabin and it came with a bottle of wine too. Having the balcony - albeit it's small! - was great as we could relax in the evening with beers bought from the boat girls who sail up to the boat to sell their wares. Drinks are pricy on board - e.g. 64,000 for a beer - but haggled down to 25,000 from them. The boat crew don't bat an eyelid either about them coming up alongside.
