Help is needed.
I am planning to travel to Vietnam on 1st Dec, for an approximately 10 days trip.
I will be flying out from Kuala Lumpur. Would it be better to fly in to Hanoi or to Ho Chi Minh first?
Safe to travel on my own in these places?
How is the getting around in Sapa and Mekong should i travel on my own without engaging any travel agency?

You can get cheap flights from KL to both Hanoi and Saigon, so if you're planning on seeing stuff in the north and south, just pick one or the other - doesn't make much of a difference.
No need to use a travel agency.
Though I'd say covering Hanoi, Saigon, the Delta and Sapa in ten days is a lot of ground to cover once you factor in travel times etc.

Right, thanks for the advice.
I'm just wondering if I should get a private tour to tour Sapa (trekking) and to get around Sapa?
can I just tour on my own and travel the town on foot?

No I wouldn't say a private tour was required - certainly no need to book in advance through online travel agents.
We have a couple of pieces on Sapa here and here – they are a bit dated, but should be helpful.

A lot of travel agencies in Hanoi can make customized trips. They will give you an itinerary to Sapa that fits your desire and needs. No need to book in advance.
