HCMC to Vung Tau
HCMC to Vung Tau
There used to be a Russian hydro-plane ferry from HCMC to Vung Tau, but I think there stopped that service due to an accident. Currently, what is the best way to travel from HCMC to VT?

Yes, Greenlines is recommended; actually, it's your only boat choice.
It's a pretty cool trip that shows you some ships and boats as you leave HCMC, goes through a mangrove forest preserve and then approaches Vung Tau through a brief stretch of the sea.
The disadvantages are that:
there aren't many trips per day,
they don't sail in rough weather (heavy rain & strong wind)
it's more expensive than by road (250k vnd vs approx. 95 - 120k)
Leaves from District 4 (about a 20-minute trip from Pham Ngu Lao/District 1 tourist areas)
Definitely, have someone call to confirm if the boat is going and when.
Sorry, the sites below are mostly just in Vietnamese. Have someone call.
Futa Bus runs from De Tham Street in the backpacker zone:

Also, there are several vans that go from near Ben Thanh market (across the huge roundabout):
Hoa Mai: http://xelimousine.vn/car/hoa-mai-limousine/ (they also cheaper normal vans)
Toan Thang: http://toanthangcar.com
Finally, there are some limos from the airport:
