Me & hubby are thinking of havin our 3 weeks xmas holidays by takin only trains from Kuala Lumpur to Saigon (arriving by plane to Kuala Lumpur from Australia)and stopping here & there on the way.
Has anyone ever done this before?

There are no trains to take you all the way across Cambodia (and none at all in Laos should you choose to go through there), so you'll need to use some other transport at least some of the way :). But you can take the train from KL to Bangkok and from Bangkok to the Cambodian border, both nice rides.
as far as i know theres a train in one middle part of Cambodia (http://www.seat61.com/Map-SEAsia.htm)otherwise the rest can be with bus. Anyway, thanks for your reply.

You could do something similar to the following and avoid flying ...
KL to Bangkok by train,
Bus to Trat,
Minivan or bus to Cambodian border and Koh Kong,
Ferry from Koh Kong to Sihanoukville (great trip!),
Sihanoukville to Saigon by bus (long trip!).
but i do believe theres a train going from bangkok to Aranyaprathet and from there buses to pretty much anywhere... this map shows buses through the major cities in Cambodia
