Google maps and Travelfish

Posted by somtam2000 on 4/5/2009 at 13:26

As I mentioned in the April newsletter, as a part of our new Malaysia coverage I'm looking to better integrate Google Maps into Travelfish. In the past, I shied away from Google Maps primarily because the resolution wasn't good enough. While this is still an issue in Laos and Cambodia, and, to a lesser extent Vietnam, for Thailand, Malaysia and Singapore the maps are very good. So, I've made a demo page for the thriving metropolis (that is a joke) of Kangar in northern Peninsular Malaysia ...

Interview in today's Phnom Penh Post

Posted by somtam2000 on 1/7/2009 at 15:39

I've an interview in today's PhnomPenh Post -- Cambodia's leading English language daily newspaper. If you're in Cambodia at the moment you've probably already seen today's paper, but if not, you can read the interview here. First one to guess the country where the photo was taken gets a Travelfish Guide of their choice ;-) Cheers! ...

Travelfish turns five this Sunday

Posted by somtam2000 on 8/7/2009 at 09:46

Yup, where did those five years go?! This Sunday Travelfish officially turns five. To celebrate we'll be having a few giveaways through the day on Sunday. Given we've got big readerships in the UK, North America, Australia and New Zealand and across SE Asia, we'll stagger the giveaways through the day to give more people a chance to win things. As we're based in Bali, we'll get things going around mid morning Sunday our time (that's GMT +8). So watch this space! ...

More map madness

Posted by somtam2000 on 6/7/2009 at 19:05

So you remember the fancy Google Map thingy I added for Phnom Penh, well have just added another one (yes I know, a long time between maps!) this time for Melaka in Malaysia. But there's a new twist. Whenever you're browsing individual properties, if I've got them tagged to the great googletron, you get a mini map that shows just where it is. So for example, if you were making a beeline for the salubrious Travellers' Lodge you'll see a little map in the left column showing you (more or l ...

Travelfish and Internet Explorer 6

Posted by somtam2000 on 19/2/2009 at 12:29

If you're using Internet Explorer 6 as your web browser, from today onwards, you'll see a slightly different homepage to everyone else. Instead of the photo of the woman from Chinese New Year in Bangkok, you'll see a pink box with a short note suggesting you consider either upgrading your browser to Internet Explorer 7, or (better still) switching to a different browser, like Firefox, Opera or Chrome. This box will only appear to you once (unless you clear cookies, in which case it will ...

Add your Twitter tag to your Travelfish profile

Posted by somtam2000 on 25/6/2009 at 12:35

For those who are into Twitter, you might be interested to know you can now add your Twitter ID to your Travelfish profile. Once you've added it, you'll see it will appear in the box beside any of your posts on the forum. (You will have needed to set your profile to "public" for it to display). If you want to see an example, look no further than any post by me, and you'll see a link in the left column pointing to my Twitter profile. For those not into Twitter, feel free to totally ignor ...

Posted by somtam2000 on 25/1/2009 at 08:11

We're looking for a Bangkok-based researcher to update and put together new content for While the position is Bangkok-based the successful candidate would have opportunities to travel in Thailand and the region. The position would be ideal for a native English-speaking blogger/writer with an interest in travel. It would fit well for someone who has other freelance gigs but a fair amount of free time up their sleeve. We're quite flexible. This is NOT an Internet research job. T ...

Any German speakers out there?

Posted by somtam2000 on 20/8/2008 at 06:53

I came across the following about Travelfish on a German website -- if there's a German-speaker who can translate, I'd really appreciate it. "Von einem echten Marktführer bei den Empfehlungsportalen kann man nicht sprechen. Manche eignen sich nur für bestimmte Regionen, wie Travelfish, die sich auf Südostasien spezialisiert haben, viele andere ringen nach genug Usern, um den ganzen Globus umfassend erklären zu können. Dabei sind alle entweder die "ersten" (Tripflip), "genialsten" (Travel ...

Regarding posts from Vietnam

Posted by somtam2000 on 2/6/2009 at 10:06

Due to ongoing problems of spam from Vietnam, we've decided to display a small Vietnamese flag next to all posts made from Vietnamese IP addresses. This is not to say all posts from Vietnam are spam -- of course they're not! However, when you see a post from a Travelfish member saying they're in New York planning a trip to Vietnam and looking for a recommendation for a Ha Long Bay tour operator, then if the flag appears, it means that they're probably (the IP address test is not 100%) in ...

AirAsia advertising with Travelfish

Posted by somtam2000 on 13/5/2009 at 08:04

As you've probably noticed, we're running a fair number of AirAsia advertisements on Travelfish now. This is because we've just commenced a year-long advertising deal with them and we're delighted to have Southeast Asia's leading budget airline pick Southeast Asia's leading budget website as an advertising partner. I've personally flown them dozens of times, and wouldn't hesitate to recommend them -- even if they were not advertising with us! So, if you're looking for a cheap flight, keep ...

How come there are only "old" reviews of places to stay

Posted by alohaceline on 8/2/2009 at 18:21

hello travelfish! I am a bit confused and wanted to ask how come that the reviews of guesthouses and places to stay are mostly a few years old, I haven't found any recent reviews. Anyway, as a part of the new fangled site, we've got a Flickr ( group going (for those that don't know, Flickr is a photo website where you can upload your holiday pics for all and sundry to see). New site, broken links

Posted by somtam2000 on 14/1/2009 at 09:31

Just a quick note that we're in the final stage of moving to the new-fangled Travelfish design, but as a side-effect of this move you may come across some broken links and duplicated information (particularly in the Sihanoukville,Cambodia and Phuket,Thailand sections of the site). Sorry for the inconvenience, but we figured it was better to do it this way rather than shut the whole site down for a day or two. Thanks for your patience! Stuart ...
