A quick note to travel agents

Posted by somtam2000 on 11/3/2016 at 15:15

Every now and then we get a bunch of travel agents (mostly based in Vietnam, but Indian and the Philippines also problematic) posting on Travelfish. Now appears to be one of those times. We consider these to be spam and they are not welcome on the site. Here's a simple question to ask yourself while deciding if you should post on Travelfish: Are you a travel agent or posting on behalf of a travel agent? If the answer is yes, then don't post. See that was simple. In anticipation of ifs, but ...

Using the Private Messaging Feature

Posted by exacto on 5/8/2016 at 22:49

For somtam, DLuek, or anyone else who can help: I can't figure out how to use the private messaging feature. I used to know how to do this. I know I used to know how to do this, because my profile includes a list of people I've written via PM, including you both. I can send to folks on this list, but can't find how to send to others. For the record, I am logged in, my PM is set to enabled, and my profile is public. What am I missing? Thanks for the help. Cheers. ...

Posted by SBE on 11/5/2016 at 05:17

Where's the edit button nowadays dear Somtam? Says you can edit posts for up to 30 mins after posting but doesn't elaborate how exactly. All I can see is a red spam reporting link. ...

Switching Travelfish to https

Posted by somtam2000 on 18/5/2016 at 07:52

Hi all, Just a quick note to let you know that we're switching the site over to https (SSL) this weekend. **Hopefully** the change will go smoothly and there will be a minimum to service interruption - ideally none. We're doing this for a number of reasons, but one of the most pressing reasons is that in Indonesia many telecom providers like Telkomsel hijack websites which are not using a https connection and insert their own idiotic ads onto the site. In our case, Telkomsel's crappy parasiti ...

Spam reporting & post editing

Posted by Captain_Bob on 23/3/2016 at 08:37

Been wondering a couple things since the latest upgrade. There used to be a button to report spam, etc. Now it's gone so I just report it on a reply post. Is that the best way and/or will there be a Spam/report button/flag any time soon? Previously could edit posts for a limited time, but now that's gone and I miss it. Any chance that will be coming back? On "that other travel forum" members can edit their post anytime until someone else adds to the thread, which works quite well. Chee ...

How is accommodation sorted throughout Travelfish?

Posted by maristia on 8/3/2016 at 15:56

Well, I have this doubt that I can't figure out and I haven't found the answer posted anywhere. I don't know how accommodation is sorted in Travelsifh. I love the site, but somehow I don't get the idea when it comes to finding accommodation. The fact that I'm looking a room in Bangkok doesn't help either ) Can anybody help me here? Thanks! ...

Travelfish new site, almost there

Posted by somtam2000 on 6/12/2015 at 07:42

Hi everyone, Welcome to the new Travelfish, or, well, some of it anyway! It has been a bit of a long and winding road getting here, and we're not quite there yet, but, here we are! The good news (well, we hope so) is that: * The new site should be easier to read; * The content is better organised and centralised around individual destinations; * The site should be considerably faster; * The site should render better in phones and tablets; * There are pretty pics up top (and a lot more to come) ...

Switching to a new Travelfish site design

Posted by somtam2000 on 30/11/2015 at 23:02

Hi all, Just a quick heads up that we're switching to a new site design this weekend. As a part of the changeover process we need to take the entire existing site offline and replace it with the new one. We'll be doing this from early this coming Saturday morning (Bali time). Hopefully the change shouldn't take more than a couple of hours, but, well, we'll see. One important change once the new site comes online is all members will be required to reset their password before they can login agai ...

Quick question re deleted posts and moderation

Posted by somtam2000 on 2/11/2015 at 09:11

Hi all, As regulars will be aware, our moderation is fairly strict relative to other travel forums. Obvious spam, travel agent rubbish, LM, abuse, threats etc all get nuked quickly. At the moment the post just vanishes publicly when we delete it. So my questions is would you prefer to have a placeholder left noting that a post has been deleted? If so, why? Bear in mind, if we left a placeholder, it would be templated, ie., This post was removed because it was: X Not personalised, ie., I de ...

Are you a traveller who blogs? or perhaps a blogger that travels?

Posted by somtam2000 on 20/7/2006 at 07:27

The title says it all! We're looking at doing a series of email interviews with travellers who blogs -- or is that bloggers that travel... Anyway, we're looking to discuss both the technical/practical side of blogging along with the more nebulous topics of why travellers blog and how blogging affects both travellers and the destinations they travel to. You trip would need to at least be passing through one of the countries we cover. If you're a blogger and have a site that is tracki ...

Changes to Travelfish PDF guides

Posted by somtam2000 on 31/7/2015 at 02:09

Long-time Travelfish members may remember that we used to sell Travelfish guides in PDF format (you can still grab them here -- no charge, members only). Then we got all wrapped up in producing iPhone apps and stopped doing the PDF guides, as we didn't have time to do both. We stopped the iPhone apps a year or two back and are now moving full circle -- back to paid-for PDF guides. What this means is we'll be discontinuing how Travelfish members are able to build their own travel guide. All PD ...

A note to Hotmail, Outlook, MSN and Live email users

Posted by somtam2000 on 2/7/2015 at 21:46

Heya, At the moment Microsoft is not delivering emails from Travelfish to any email accounts from the Hotmail, Outlook, MSN and Live email services. While this shouldn't impact existing members too much, if you are trying to sign up for an account at Travelfish, the activation email will not be delivered to your mail box (they're not delivering it at all, ie not even to your spam box) so you wan't be able to activate the account, so you won't be able to log in. Ahhh crap. So, as a temporary ...

Travelfish and adblockers

Posted by somtam2000 on 26/5/2015 at 00:05

From this week's newsletter: "A bit's been written lately about the growing use of ad-blockers among internet readers so I thought I'd pen a few quick words on them and why, if you do choose to use one, we hope you "whitelist" Travelfish.org. Travelfish is an advertising-supported website. While the site has a number of revenue streams, including commissions on hotel reservations and insurance, one of the mainstays remains banner advertising. Google supplies the vast majority of ...

New guide format

Posted by somtam2000 on 15/3/2015 at 02:30

Hi everyone, I've just made live a new format of the PDF travel guides we're had available on the site for, well, ages. The new version have pics and maps and more information than the old ones, but we have had to disable the really big ones like Bangkok, Ko Samui, Chiang Mai, Phuket and a few other big islands but we'll have them live in the next week (or so). Where previously the whole system for making these was kinda buried, we've changed it to be more obvious. So, if you're on the page ...
