Posted by pauljaymes on 25/7/2006 at 00:19

There wasn't anywhere else to post this so I hope it's ok. As well as Travelfish I've used the excellent WayToRussia.Net for Russian Travel info and for Europe/Oz/Nz travel info. Does anyone know of a good travel site that covers China? ...

Travelfish in Bangkok Airways inflight mag

Posted by somtam2000 on 9/11/2006 at 20:45

Travelfish has been profiled in this month's Bangkok Airways magazine, but as half of us are wayyyy to pregnant to fly, we're not planning any flights any time soon! If anyone happens to be flying Bangkok Airways this month and could grab the page for us (it apprently includes a pic of us at Boroburdur in Java), we'd really appreciate it -- could either meet up in Bangkok or if you could pop it in the post... If anyone thinks they can help, please say so in this thread and I'll contact yo ...

Travelfish eGuides added

Posted by somtam2000 on 23/10/2006 at 07:57

We've added a new feature to the Travelfish site -- Travelfish eGuides. They're similar to eFish, but contain a lot more information, including maps, background information and other detailed listings not available in eFish and in some cases not on the main Travelfish site either. Currently we've got two available -- one for Angkor Wat and Siem Reap and the other for Vientiane, but we'll be rolling out a lot of other destinations in the immediate future. They're not free, but we've tried t ...

Travelfish hits 10,000 members

Posted by somtam2000 on 13/10/2006 at 18:54

We just had the 10,000th person join Travelfish! While we're delighted that we've reached this benchmark, I've got to say I'm a bit relieved that not all those 10,000 members are asking questions on the messageboard! Cheers and have a good weekend all Somtam ...

Travelfish Scrapbook added

Posted by somtam2000 on 1/10/2006 at 18:02

OK, we admit it -- with almost 3,000 guesthouses now listed, it was getting a bit hard to find anything! So, we've added a new function called Travelfish Scrapbook -- sort of like a Bookmarks features just for Travelfish. You'll see on both the destination pages and the profile pages for individual hotels and guesthouses there's a new bright green link reading "Add this guesthouse/destination to your scrapbook". If you click on the link, a directlink to that page will be added to your pag ...

Missing Info in Travel Guides

Posted by cishere on 29/8/2006 at 12:00

Am i right in thinking that not all the info you have about various locations are in your travel guides? I have downloaded all the Vietnam sections but there seems to be more info about Sapa etc on your site which isn't in the actual guides. Is this just me being stupid or is there a logical reason for this? Would be really useful if it was just all there do download. Thanks ...

Boy or girl and how old?

Posted by somtam2000 on 27/6/2006 at 07:15

I found this tool while mourning Australia's World Cup loss, surfing through one of my favourite problogger sites -- you enter in the website address and it gives you the boy:girl ratio and estimated age of the people who read the site I have no idea how they come up with these guestimates, but here's the details for your's truly -- travelfish: Sex: Boys: 27% Girls: 73% Age: Under 18 8.79% 18-24 10.44% 25-34 59.19% 35-49 9.98% 50+ 11.59% So if you're a girl aged between 25-34 ...

Thailand - Hua Hin

Posted by tblais on 14/8/2006 at 06:15

We will be spending 3 months in Thailand (our 3rd visit) and hope to end it by spending a quiet week at a beach in March. I've come across an ad for Long Beach Inn which is 20K from Hua Hin. It sounds very promising but I've been unable to find any reviews on it. Has anyone out there stayed at this place? Also thought we'd take a trip to Pai this time but my daughter (who lives in Chiang Mai) advises against it. She said the drive is terrible and she thinks we're a little to old and staid (60 ...

Suggestion: Printer-friendly listings

Posted by pauljaymes on 26/7/2006 at 00:18

There may be good reasons you don't want to do this, but the wonderful accomodation listings on travelfish aren't much use when you arrive somewhere new and need somewhere to stay. OK, so you can sit in advance and write down the details of all the places you like the look of, but who has the time or patience for that? Not me, and what if the ones you write down are full? So, wouldn't it be cool if you could hit 'print' on a listings page and produce a condensed one or two page summary of all ...

Do you want to read about bad places?

Posted by somtam2000 on 17/7/2006 at 19:06

In the past we've listed both the good and the bad when it comes to accommodation and eating options, but now, with thousands of places listed, we're thinking of removing some of the places we didn't think were so hot and instead concentrating on the better and best places to stay and eat. As the reader, do you find bad listings useful? Do you want to be warned off the flophouse with festy bathrooms and a thousand dogs that start barking at 4am or would you rather we just don't list places li ...

The Times on good websites

Posted by somtam2000 on 14/7/2006 at 05:54

The Times Online has released a list of what they consider to be "The 108 best travel websites"... We didn't make the cut unfortunately -- in fact very little out of Asia did. Take a look at their list here, and if you really think Travelfish belong on that list, you can let them know! ;-) ...

Travelfish turns three!

Posted by somtam2000 on 12/7/2006 at 11:57

Travelfish turns three today and we just wanted to say a big thankyou to everyone who has used the site and contributed in even the smallest way to help making travelfish the success that it is. It's been a long but very satisfying three years as we've watched the site slowly grow from a small website that covered little more than Khao San Road to a pretty substantial affair that covers four countries and contains independent reviews on over 2,500 guesthouses and hotels in the region along wi ...

Posted by somtam2000 on 22/6/2006 at 10:16

We're looking for one or two researchers based in Vietnam and one in Laos. Please see our jobs section for more information. We're looking for two Vietnam-based and one Laos-based native-English speaking researchers to expand content for the Travelfish ( website. This is part-time, contract-based work -- ideally suited to those who travel frequently within Vietnam or Laos and enjoy it.
