A note to Hotmail, Outlook, MSN and Live email users

Posted by somtam2000 on 2/7/2015 at 21:46

Heya, At the moment Microsoft is not delivering emails from Travelfish to any email accounts from the Hotmail, Outlook, MSN and Live email services. While this shouldn't impact existing members too much, if you are trying to sign up for an account at Travelfish, the activation email will not be delivered to your mail box (they're not delivering it at all, ie not even to your spam box) so you wan't be able to activate the account, so you won't be able to log in. Ahhh crap. So, as a temporary ...

Posted by somtam2000 on 27/6/2015 at 00:46

Hi all, We're having some website weirdness at the moment which we're trying to get to the bottom of. Some people (us included) are finding the site so slow it is unusable. For others though, it is working fine. If you;re not having problems accessing the site, please say so and mention which country you are in. Thanks! ...

Travelfish and adblockers

Posted by somtam2000 on 26/5/2015 at 00:05

From this week's newsletter: "A bit's been written lately about the growing use of ad-blockers among internet readers so I thought I'd pen a few quick words on them and why, if you do choose to use one, we hope you "whitelist" Travelfish.org. Travelfish is an advertising-supported website. While the site has a number of revenue streams, including commissions on hotel reservations and insurance, one of the mainstays remains banner advertising. Google supplies the vast majority of ...

New guide format

Posted by somtam2000 on 15/3/2015 at 02:30

Hi everyone, I've just made live a new format of the PDF travel guides we're had available on the site for, well, ages. The new version have pics and maps and more information than the old ones, but we have had to disable the really big ones like Bangkok, Ko Samui, Chiang Mai, Phuket and a few other big islands but we'll have them live in the next week (or so). Where previously the whole system for making these was kinda buried, we've changed it to be more obvious. So, if you're on the page ...

Site downtime Wednesday 28 January

Posted by somtam2000 on 27/1/2015 at 21:20

Hi all, Just a quick note that Travelfish will be unavailable for about four to six hours later today as we switch over to a new server. We'd planned to do this over the weekend, but the existing server is about to keel over and we need to move house today. The scheduled offline time is 14:00 - 20:00 GMT +8 (Bali time). Apologies for any inconvenience - we'll have it back up and running as soon as possible. Cheers Stuart ...

Removal of reader reviews

Posted by somtam2000 on 17/12/2014 at 06:47

Hi everyone, Just a quick note to let everyone know that we've removed the ability for reader reviews to be added to the destination, accommodation, food and sights sections of the site. What has already been submitted will remain displayed on the site till next early year when we launch the redesigned site, at which time they will all be removed entirely from the public site. So, before anything else, thank you to everyone who, over the years, has made the time to submit reviews and updates. ...

New PDF travel guides ... coming very soon

Posted by somtam2000 on 4/12/2014 at 21:40

Hi everyone, We've been buried in a cave working on a new version of our PDF travel guides and we're almost there. We'll be shutting down the existing system for building your own shortly and switching to a new method which creates shiny ones. This is close to a final version, but any feedback, as always, much appreciated. It is designed primarily for use on tablets and phones, but prints off just fine for those who prefer paper. When we switch to the new system (next Friday I think) any exis ...

New member planning first time backpacking trip.

Posted by BuzzmFrog84 on 1/12/2014 at 08:30

Hi everyone. I'm Tim and I'm looking to take a trip to Southeast Asia. While I'm sure most of what I need to know I can find on this website, I have a few general questions. If everything worked out perfectly, I would be going to Thailand, Cambodia, Laos, Malaysia, Vietnam, hopefully a little time in Singapore and if I'm lucky Indonesia. I'd say I'm looking to go for about 2 months. I have $5000 to spend before gear, flights or anything else is spent. How realistic is the time with the money I ...

Any plans to expand to other countries or regions beyond Asia?

Posted by roam on 15/11/2014 at 05:42

Since I'm new here I don't know if this question already has been addressed. Just curious if Travelfish has any future plans to expand coverage to other countries or regions like South America, Central America, Europe? Or will it continue to focus on Asia only? ...

BBC buys Lonely Planet

Totally unrelated to anything here, but pretty big news in the travel guide publishing industry today -- the BBC has just purchased 75% of Lonely Planet. Full story here. ...

Lonely Planet does not endorse Travelfish

Posted by somtam2000 on 19/3/2009 at 13:35

Regular Travelfishers may have noticed a slight change on our homepage. We used to have a great Travelfish recommendation from leading travel publisher Lonely Planet displayed along with a small Lonely Planet logo as attribution for the quote. Obviously, as a small business, we were extremely flattered to have Lonely Planet say what they did about Travelfish. This morning, on 19 March 2009, we received an email from the Infringements Co-ordinator at Lonely Planet. She informed us that t ...

Site weirdness

Posted by somtam2000 on 5/11/2014 at 19:51

Hi everyone, We're in the semi-final stages of moving content around in prep for the redesign and there will be some temporary weirdness, particularly on the blogs as we progressively shut them down and move content from the blogs back over into the destination guides. You may find that some places you have bookmarked have gone missing and there are problems with the PDF guides which we hope to have fixed in the coming days. Apols in advance for any hassles in this regard. Cheers! ...

Logged in Time Limit

Posted by Geer1 on 28/8/2013 at 12:10

Was wondering if increasing the time limit before you are logged out or even offering a stay logged in option is possible. I like to write long winded replies and it is quite annoying logging in then typing post just to have to back up, copy text, re-login, past text and submit post. Time limit must only be half hour or something like that(maybe an hour, I am quite slow sometimes...) but it could be a few hours at least imo. ...

Travelfish redesign call for assistance

Posted by somtam2000 on 22/8/2014 at 20:01

Hi everyone, We've been busy with a redesign for a while now and I'm looking for a few regular Travelfish members who have a bit of time to help us out looking at mockups of different pages for the site. It won't be a big time sink, but we'd ask you to look at a page now and then -- probably once a week at this stage, tell us what you think and answer a few specific questions that we'd have for you related to that particular mockup. If you're interested to help out, please let me know in this ...

Creating and downloading guides

Posted by chrissyrah1982 on 20/8/2014 at 03:44

Possibly being very dense here but I can't work out where I create personalised guides nor how I can download/extract anything currently on here. The only option I can see is the 52 week free ebook. I'm going to Singapore, Bali, Sydney and Dubai on honeymoon (in 2 weeks) and wanted to take some information to read and reseacrh. Any help and/or guidance would be extremely appreciated. Thank you.... Christine (Newbie) ...

Forum search could improve

Posted by eastwest on 23/2/2014 at 02:49

I'm not sure if it's me or whether the search function could be improved. When I enter "phnom penh to bangkok" I get a whole list of relevant posts. However, it's completely unclear when these posts were made and I can only find out the date of post once I've opened the post. Then I discover that a post is from 2007, the one above from 2009 and the one after from 2008. In short, I have no idea on which to click to find the most recent post. A few suggestions: - don't show any posts o ...

Travelfish turning 10, Ask me anything on Outbounding

Posted by somtam2000 on 7/7/2014 at 23:15

As some will be aware (or not!) this site turns ten in a couple of days (July 12 to be exact). To celebrate I'm answering questions about Travelfish over on Outbounding. You can see the discussion about Travelfish here. The questions so far are a little dry and related to running the site, so if you've any questions AT ALL, please feel free to ask away -- I'm especially qualified on the topic of best beer and softest sand in Southeast Asia Cheers ...

Mid-repy timeout and Edit ability

Posted by Captain_Bob on 28/4/2014 at 13:02

1. Although I've elected for "Remember login: Enabled" in Preferences and can therefore return to the site eternally logged in, it seems the clock is ticking while I'm replying to a post. Is it possible to keep me logged in mid-reply (while I get distracted, go for coffee, etc,)? Very frustrating to get that "you must be logged in" and lose whatever I've written. 2. Posts become un-editable after a short time, even if no one has replied to them. I'd prefer to change that so ...
