Starting a new Thread /Conversation

Posted by razztravel on 22/7/2013 at 11:24

Well done to TravelFish for a fantastic site! Couldn't figure out how to start a new thread till I realised you are using the term post which normally means a message or reply added to a Thread (or Conversation). May I suggest that "Add a new post" is a standard way of saying reply or add another comment. But starting a new thread or conversation is saying you are starting a new subject with it's own posts/replies. Bravo! Travelfish :o) ...

Travelfish turns 9

Posted by somtam2000 on 12/7/2013 at 03:16

Hi all, Another day, another year, almost another decade. Have put together a wrap on the last year over on my personal blog -- may be of interest. Perhaps the most important bit: "Well first and foremost it has seen our slowly growing membership continue to work to make the site the great resource it is. Thank you "” every single one of you "” even those who drive me a little mad." That would be all of you forum regulars -- thanks -- and should you make it to Bali, ple ...

Server downtime Saturday June 15, 2013

Posted by somtam2000 on 13/6/2013 at 09:52

Hi all, Just to let you know Travelfish will be offline for a chunk of time this coming Saturday June 15 as we move the site to a new server to try and address the performance problems we've had in the last week or so. I can't supply exact times at this stage sorry, as we're waiting for the new server to be provisioned, but once that is done I should be able to supply a time block -- ideally it will be a 6-8 hour block in the middle of Satuday GMT +8. Apologies for any inconvenience, but we th ...

Trip Reports misnomer

Posted by tezza on 7/2/2013 at 00:32

Jeez Stew - I reckon you should re-name TRIP REPORTS Trip Suggestions? I've given up posting my trip reports there on account they will get lost in the list of dudes asking if their itinerary looks okay. ...

NEW: Free travel guides from Travelfish

Posted by somtam2000 on 14/5/2013 at 22:09

Delighted to announce the release of our first full colour free travel guide -- to our flavour of the month, Flores/Komodo in Indonesia. These new guides look their best on the iPad as we used iBooks Author to build them, but we've also generated PDF versions in hi-res and low-res flavours which means people will also be able to use them on their smartphones and other tablets. There are also printable versions (again in hi- and low-res) which contain the exact same information, but have a diffe ...

Giving back in Southeast Asia

Posted by somtam2000 on 30/1/2013 at 22:15

Just a small announcement, we've added a new section to the Feature Stories section of the site titled "Giving back in Southeast Asia". What is happening is every month a Travelfish.org writer selects a charity or non-government organisation that they believe does excellent work on their patch in Southeast Asia. They write about them and we donate $100, a small way for us to give something back to the region. If you're looking to give back too, please consider giving a little cash as ...

Minor change in member posts section cc Thaibeachlovers

Posted by somtam2000 on 23/1/2013 at 03:25

As suggested by @Thaibeachlovers, I've changed the layout somewhat on the "latest posts you've made section" (need to be logged in to see it) so that at a glance you can see the latest posts you have made and also if anyone else has responded to them. I've not extensively tested this on other platforms (like phones for eg) so if you get something weird happening, please let me know. I'd never considered laying it out this way, but, for those who don't want to get email notifications o ...

Quick note re visas and border crossings thread

Posted by somtam2000 on 22/1/2013 at 19:54

We're reorganising the Monster Visa and Border crossings thread into separate, more usable strands, and also adding intros to some of the new country threads. As a result you'll be seeing a bunch of FAQs popping up through today - sorry for any confusion. Cheers ...

Maybe shift reviews?

Posted by tezza on 21/1/2013 at 00:39

I wasn't sure where to put this. Anyway I recently posted reviews of Ko Jum, Ko Ngai and Ko Kradan on the Thailand forum. I was thinking with high season progressing people may need this info ASAP. I know it takes some time to get stuff up on PLACES - USER REVIEWS but long-term the info is probably more useful there. So I have no objection if my forum stuff is moved/copied to that site. ...

Swiss woman, aged 22, missing in Thailand

Posted by somtam2000 on 15/1/2013 at 04:48

We received the following just now by email: Tscherina Nora Janisch (22) from Switzerland is travelling in various countries since August. She entered Thailand in the beginning of December and hasn't been heard from since December 22, 2012. She is travelling alone, staying mainly in Backpacker Lodges or Couchsurfing. Usually, she informs her family on a weekly basis. Anyway to contact her (phone, e-mail, facebook, skype) has failed. Have you seen her or do you know anything? If so, pleas ...

Travelfish forum usage guidelines - request for comment

Posted by somtam2000 on 3/1/2013 at 20:00

Hi everyone, As I mentioned in this thread, I've been rolling out a number of changes to the Travelfish.org forum. One of the changes that I'm making is adding a couple of moderators to help me keep on top of the forum and see that it runs smoothly. In the past I've just worked off a basic rule sheet, but now that we'll be having a more formalised moderating presence I thought it would be a good idea to put the following together so that everyone is aware of what is going on and why. Most of t ...

Proposed feature for the forum

Posted by somtam2000 on 15/1/2013 at 22:32

Hi All, With the many new destinations that have been added to the forum, over time, as they start to get comments (which may take months) the front page of the site, where the latest conversations are listed, may end up with a far wider ranging set of destinations appearing. So, would people be interested in being able to "ignore" a section of the forum? Say for example you wanted to ignore the Hong Kong discussion forum you'd just specify that in your Member Profile and any conver ...

New sections and other changes with the Travelfish forum

Hi all. Yes I'm still on my back so still making more improvements to the forum -- you should see the destination guide inputing pile that is growing beside me as I type -- I do need to be able to sit up to do that though -- hopefully inside a week. Anyway, my falling apart body aside, a couple of updates: Forum subscriptions Being able to unsubscribe to threads you subscribed to but never posted to will FINALLY be fixed today. So we have added a few new countries to the forum

Posted by somtam2000 on 11/1/2013 at 08:00

So we've gone ahead and added a few (well, quite a few) new countries to the forum. At the moment they're all empty, but I remember when the Thailand forum had two threads and now it has over 5,000 -- so these things take time. We've broken them out regionally, Southeast Asia, East Asia, South Asia and Australasia -- we drew the line at the Pacific and we figure once they bulk out a bit they should be useful for longer-term travellers doing the overland trips from I ...

You can now add images to posts on the Travelfish forum

Posted by somtam2000 on 5/1/2013 at 23:31

We've just re-enabled the image posting code for posts on the Travelfish forum and you can see an example below. The above was taken one evening on Nusa Lembongan and I've embedded it from the Travelfish Flickr pool here. A simple post like the above is simple to do and I'll post the instructions below in two posts so that you know how it works. We'd disabled this feature for a long time -- to be honest, I can't remember why -- but we hope you find it useful. Cheers ...

New member profile pages

Posted by somtam2000 on 4/1/2013 at 03:05

Hi all, I can be so productive with a bad back Have just updated the member profile pages which (if activated) can be reached via a link in the left column of the forum. The main change is the layout and, should you choose to enter social network information on your profile page, links from four of these (Twitter, Facebook, Google+ and Flickr) will be displayed. Obviously if you don't enter your social info into your Member Profile, or don't make your member profile public, then other people ...
