Just to let you know Travelfish will be offline for a chunk of time this coming Saturday June 15 as we move the site to a new server to try and address the performance problems we've had in the last week or so. I can't supply exact times at this stage sorry, as we're waiting for the new server to be provisioned, but once that is done I should be able to supply a time block -- ideally it will be a 6-8 hour block in the middle of Satuday GMT +8.
Apologies for any inconvenience, but we th ...
Jeez Stew - I reckon you should re-name TRIP REPORTS Trip Suggestions?
I've given up posting my trip reports there on account they will get lost in the list of dudes asking if their itinerary looks okay. ...
Recently I've noticed quite a difference between Travelfish on Firefox and the same on Internet Explorer - especially the slide show on the home page. Is Travelfish optimized for Internet Explorer? ...
Delighted to announce the release of our first full colour free travel guide -- to our flavour of the month, Flores/Komodo in Indonesia.
These new guides look their best on the iPad as we used iBooks Author to build them, but we've also generated PDF versions in hi-res and low-res flavours which means people will also be able to use them on their smartphones and other tablets. There are also printable versions (again in hi- and low-res) which contain the exact same information, but have a diffe ...

Hello! Welcome to the website for active and independent travelers! snip We trust people, not travel books, so if you like to travel and want to know the latest information from local residents or you yourself can share their experiences and give advice to travelers, we invite you to register! ...
Just a small announcement, we've added a new section to the Feature Stories section of the site titled "Giving back in Southeast Asia".
What is happening is every month a Travelfish.org writer selects a charity or non-government organisation that they believe does excellent work on their patch in Southeast Asia. They write about them and we donate $100, a small way for us to give something back to the region. If you're looking to give back too, please consider giving a little cash as ...
As suggested by @Thaibeachlovers, I've changed the layout somewhat on the "latest posts you've made section" (need to be logged in to see it) so that at a glance you can see the latest posts you have made and also if anyone else has responded to them. I've not extensively tested this on other platforms (like phones for eg) so if you get something weird happening, please let me know.
I'd never considered laying it out this way, but, for those who don't want to get email notifications o ...
We're reorganising the Monster Visa and Border crossings thread into separate, more usable strands, and also adding intros to some of the new country threads. As a result you'll be seeing a bunch of FAQs popping up through today - sorry for any confusion.
I wasn't sure where to put this. Anyway I recently posted reviews of Ko Jum, Ko Ngai and Ko Kradan on the Thailand forum. I was thinking with high season progressing people may need this info ASAP.
I know it takes some time to get stuff up on PLACES - USER REVIEWS but long-term the info is probably more useful there. So I have no objection if my forum stuff is moved/copied to that site. ...
We received the following just now by email:
Tscherina Nora Janisch (22) from Switzerland is travelling in various countries since August. She entered Thailand in the beginning of December and hasn't been heard from since December 22, 2012.
She is travelling alone, staying mainly in Backpacker Lodges or Couchsurfing. Usually, she informs her family on a weekly basis.
Anyway to contact her (phone, e-mail, facebook, skype) has failed.
Have you seen her or do you know anything?
If so, pleas ...
As I mentioned in this thread, I've been rolling out a number of changes to the Travelfish.org forum. One of the changes that I'm making is adding a couple of moderators to help me keep on top of the forum and see that it runs smoothly. In the past I've just worked off a basic rule sheet, but now that we'll be having a more formalised moderating presence I thought it would be a good idea to put the following together so that everyone is aware of what is going on and why.
Most of t ...
With the many new destinations that have been added to the forum, over time, as they start to get comments (which may take months) the front page of the site, where the latest conversations are listed, may end up with a far wider ranging set of destinations appearing.
So, would people be interested in being able to "ignore" a section of the forum?
Say for example you wanted to ignore the Hong Kong discussion forum you'd just specify that in your Member Profile and any conver ...
Yes I'm still on my back so still making more improvements to the forum -- you should see the destination guide inputing pile that is growing beside me as I type -- I do need to be able to sit up to do that though -- hopefully inside a week.
Anyway, my falling apart body aside, a couple of updates:
Being able to unsubscribe to threads you subscribed to but never posted to will FINALLY be fixed today.
We'll be adding a marker (similar to the &quo ...
So we've gone ahead and added a few (well, quite a few) new countries to the forum. At the moment they're all empty, but I remember when the Thailand forum had two threads and now it has over 5,000 -- so these things take time.
We've broken them out regionally, Southeast Asia, East Asia, South Asia and Australasia -- we drew the line at the Pacific and we figure once they bulk out a bit they should be useful for longer-term travellers doing the overland trips from I ...
We've just re-enabled the image posting code for posts on the Travelfish forum and you can see an example below.
The above was taken one evening on Nusa Lembongan and I've embedded it from the Travelfish Flickr pool here.
A simple post like the above is simple to do and I'll post the instructions below in two posts so that you know how it works.
We'd disabled this feature for a long time -- to be honest, I can't remember why -- but we hope you find it useful.
I can be so productive with a bad back
Have just updated the member profile pages which (if activated) can be reached via a link in the left column of the forum. The main change is the layout and, should you choose to enter social network information on your profile page, links from four of these (Twitter, Facebook, Google+ and Flickr) will be displayed. Obviously if you don't enter your social info into your Member Profile, or don't make your member profile public, then other people ...
As some of you may know in early December I did a two week motorbike trip in the Mekong Delta and while much of the time my mind was occupied with matters such as "watchout chicken/pothole/truck/lunatic/pho stall" I also spend a good while firming up some changes I'd like to make to the Travelfish forum.
So, just as soon as I am vertical again (I put my back out on Xmas day showing the kids "how" to use their new boogie boards... and so am bedridden and dosed to the ...
The Xmas New Years silly season is upon us -- Merry Christmas all!
If you're camped out somewhere in Southeast Asia with idle thumbs this Christmas day, here's some pointers for ways to fill your day.
