New sections and other changes with the Travelfish forum

Posted by somtam2000 on 10/1/2013 at 17:34

Hi all. Yes I'm still on my back so still making more improvements to the forum -- you should see the destination guide inputing pile that is growing beside me as I type -- I do need to be able to sit up to do that though -- hopefully inside a week. Anyway, my falling apart body aside, a couple of updates: Forum subscriptions Being able to unsubscribe to threads you subscribed to but never posted to will FINALLY be fixed today. Travelfish writers We'll be adding a marker (similar to the &quo ...

So we have added a few new countries to the forum

Posted by somtam2000 on 11/1/2013 at 08:00

So we've gone ahead and added a few (well, quite a few) new countries to the forum. At the moment they're all empty, but I remember when the Thailand forum had two threads and now it has over 5,000 -- so these things take time. We've broken them out regionally, Southeast Asia, East Asia, South Asia and Australasia -- we drew the line at the Pacific and we figure once they bulk out a bit they should be useful for longer-term travellers doing the overland trips from I ...

You can now add images to posts on the Travelfish forum

Posted by somtam2000 on 5/1/2013 at 23:31

We've just re-enabled the image posting code for posts on the Travelfish forum and you can see an example below. The above was taken one evening on Nusa Lembongan and I've embedded it from the Travelfish Flickr pool here. A simple post like the above is simple to do and I'll post the instructions below in two posts so that you know how it works. We'd disabled this feature for a long time -- to be honest, I can't remember why -- but we hope you find it useful. Cheers ...

New member profile pages

Posted by somtam2000 on 4/1/2013 at 03:05

Hi all, I can be so productive with a bad back Have just updated the member profile pages which (if activated) can be reached via a link in the left column of the forum. The main change is the layout and, should you choose to enter social network information on your profile page, links from four of these (Twitter, Facebook, Google+ and Flickr) will be displayed. Obviously if you don't enter your social info into your Member Profile, or don't make your member profile public, then other people ...

Forum upgrades on the way

Posted by somtam2000 on 28/12/2012 at 06:35

Hi All, As some of you may know in early December I did a two week motorbike trip in the Mekong Delta and while much of the time my mind was occupied with matters such as "watchout chicken/pothole/truck/lunatic/pho stall" I also spend a good while firming up some changes I'd like to make to the Travelfish forum. So, just as soon as I am vertical again (I put my back out on Xmas day showing the kids "how" to use their new boogie boards... and so am bedridden and dosed to the ...

Thoughts re dodgy posts

Posted by somtam2000 on 18/12/2012 at 01:39

Hey all, Just canvassing for opinions on posts that are thought likely to be fake. Generally I just delete them if I get them fast enough, but if a conversation follows before I see it (like the Sorya mall Phnom Penh thing which is almost certainly a fake) I'm a bit more cautious of deleting it. Just to be clear I'm not talking about advertorial/shilling which I just delete immediately regardless of commentary. Basically I have three options - leave it, lock it, or delete it. Thoughts? ...

Site deleted

Posted by somtam2000 on 24/9/2012 at 20:20

Hi all, SO this morning I managed to delete the entire website. Not a good morning. The blogs are still gone (working on that) but it would be a great help if you could post any URLs that are broken if you happen to find any. Just pop the URL in this thread. Thanks a lot Stuart ...

So this is it. My last post and start of a self imposed exile. Coincidence has it that this will be my 700th post. I haven't posted for a while now after a few years of contributing. The reason? I don't agree anymore with many things here. - In my opinion travelfish started of well (at least since I "discovered" it) but for me it has lost its relevance. The listings in several sections haven't been updated for years (3 and counting for some areas). This I find unacceptable for a trav ...

The new blogs are: Cambodia Indonesia Malaysia Singapore Thailand http: ...

All Nepal traffic blocked

Posted by somtam2000 on 4/6/2012 at 09:12

As regular readers may have noticed, there are a few cretins in Nepal that seem intent on letting Travelfish readers know about their Nepal tour offerings over and over and over and over again. As a response, as with China, we've blocked all traffic from Nepal. Apologies for any inconvenience. ...

When I first visited Travelfish, I was pretty excited. It was like discovering a treasure trove of information. However, that initial excitement is gone because I've noticed that much of the information is very old. That's not to say that the information isn't useful -it's better than nothing- but it makes me question how reliable the information is. What's happening (or not happening) to this website? ...

Busy times?

Posted by tezza on 15/5/2012 at 01:44

I returned from a March/April trip to Thailand and wrote at least half a dozen LOCATION and ACCOMMODATION reports/reviews. To date only one has been published. Having just returned again from different Thailand places I'm wondering whether it is worthwhile spending the time on more reports/reviews? ...

A note on manners

Posted by somtam2000 on 11/3/2012 at 07:13

Hey all, I've been distracted to say the least with some non-Travelfish stuff going on for the last month or so, and as a result some threads have got a bit, well impolite. I have mentioned this in the past, but I'll just mention it again for those who missed my earlier notes on this matter: a) If you feel a question is stupid, or the person asking hasn't searched for an answer that is already here somewhere, please ignore the question. You're under no obligation to answer anything on TF. b) ...

The Site Generally

Posted by lifemagic on 7/2/2012 at 07:54

Not sure if this is the right thread to talk about the site generally. I'm grateful for it, the info, pics, occasional maps, user reviews, and it's all free of course. I travel around a lot and like to take part, so leave reviews.I'm careful to let you know of good experiences as well as bad, and when negative, I stick to the facts. But my reviews, recently, don't show up. I'm just back from Surat Thani. I went and looked at most of the places there. The guide (on this site) is really outdated ...

Any additional insight on Thai-Cambodian border crossings?

Posted by damil1234 on 2/12/2011 at 23:39

Hello, My boyfriend and I would like to cross over into Cambodia from Thailand's Surin province. I've listed our loose itinerary along w/ plenty of questions below - can anyone lend their insight? Starting on/about Dec 10: From Chiang Mai , take train to Ayutthaya (if it's not flooded); if it's flooded, take train from Chiang Mai to Bangkok. From Ayutthaya (or Bangkok), head east to Surin province (bus? train?) to cross down to the Cambodian border. - Bus or train from Ayutthaya or Ba ...

Travelfish guides for Kindle and other ebook readers

Posted by kibatonic on 31/12/2010 at 01:13

Hi Travelfish people, first of all, thank you for this great website!! I'm planning to travel to South East Asia for 6 weeks from beginning of March on and instead as I did the few times before when I had a chance go on holiday, I'm not going to carry 2kg+ in printed books with me, but instead will use my 6" Kindle 3. And now I found your Free Guides feature... OMG, what a great idea! That's the perfect addition to my Kindle, just create books for all the destinations I'm planning to see, ...
