Travelfish on Burma (Myanmar) Sticky!

Posted by somtam2000 on 17/10/2008 at 09:24

I've just added a new section on the messageboard for discussion of Burma (Myanmar). This isn't to say we're planning on adding coverage of Burma to Travelfish, as we're not, but given there's the occasional post about it, it makes sense to have them all in one place for the benefit of all. If there are any Burma experts out there who'd be interested in putting together some kind of a Frequently Asked Questions thing on Burma to post here in the messageboard, please drop me a line at stuartmc ...

Burma travel FAQ Sticky!

Posted by somtam2000 on 9/1/2013 at 21:10

This is a (very much work in progress!) collection of links to useful threads in the Burma section of the forum along with other parts of the site. We'll update it as more interesting or useful stuff appears. Currently there is no destination guide for Burma on Travelfish. If you know of another interesting resource worth adding, please mention it in the comments. Burma or Myanmar? Here at Travelfish we use Burma rather than Myanmar as does Aung San Suu Kyi, but there are many takes on it. Here ...

Focus South of Myanmar - focus Dawei or Myeik?

Posted by REGGI100 on 10/7/2017 at 06:44

Dear Myanmar Lovers! 3 years ago I was the first time in Myanmar and the forthcoming October I will go there again for 22 days. I love this Country!! As I really liked the Hsipaw trekking, I will do trekking in Hsipaw again for 3 days at the beginning. Then I will focus only on the South of Myanmar which means 1 day Bago, one night Golden Rock, 3 days Hpa An and surroundings, 3 days Mawlamyine, 4 nights Dawei and surroundings (and then only 2 days left in Myeik ..)....My question ...

Peaceful, scenic place in Myanmar?

Posted by JiiveeR on 22/5/2017 at 14:00

Hi! I've been scrolling through the internet and started to wonder, if anyone could recommend a nice, peaceful place in Myanmar to spend a few days or so. What I had in mind was something like Nong Khiaw in Laos, a nice balance of infrastructure, beautiful scenery and good food. I'll be traveling in Myanmar later this year, it'll be my second time, first being 7 years ago. Last time I skipped Inle Lake and had that in mind, but I would love to hear if anyone has any other places they would like ...

Travel restrictions in Mon State? No!

Posted by YeMeansWater on 24/1/2017 at 04:51

People have cancelled their planned visit to southern Mon State because they were told by travel agencies and hotel staff (in other cities) that the town of Ye in southern Mon State is off-limits now. This is not the case! Don't skip Ye because of inaccurate information. Also, there have been rumours that Starlight Guesthouse (in Ye, Mon State) is not licensed to accept foreign guests. This is not true. Starlight has the correct license. May Shan 2 guesthouse also has the correct license. ...

Myanmar & Thingyan (Burmese Water Festival) - Yes or No?

Posted by xeorwin on 20/1/2015 at 14:25

Hey! I'm planning a trip to Myanmar (around 18 days) somewhere in March-April. I'll be following the typical tourist trail (Yangon, Bagan, Mandalay, Inle Lake, possibly some trekking...) but I'm a bit undecided on whether or not I should include the Thingyan festival (Burmese New Year, which will take place between the 14th and 21st of April) in my travel date: - On one hand, it sounds like fun and a great way to experience a bit of the culture. - On the other hand, I've heard that transpor ...

ATMs in Myanmar

Posted by JimmyW on 11/2/2017 at 09:13

We've seen ATMs in every city we've been to, including Yangon, Bagan, Mandalay, Hsipaw, Inle, Golden Rock, Hpa-An, and Mawlamyine. We brought crisp US dollars, and we haven't used them yet. Everyone has accepted kyat if we said that's all we had. We even paid by credit card in some hotels. ...

Mrs Popcorn in Hsipaw has passed away

Posted by HeidiSmith on 8/4/2017 at 22:15

Hello. Most travelers to Hsipaw end up in the lovely oasis of Mrs. Popcorn's Organic Garden. I was there in March to see Mrs. Popcorn, and she was out of town on a holiday. My friend in Hsipaw told me that after her trip, Mrs. Popcorn was not well, and she recently passed away. I imagine her daughters will continue to operate the cafe. RIP Mrs. Popcorn. ...

Bagan bus station taxi overcharge

Posted by lucasan on 26/2/2017 at 00:30

The main bus station, some 7 km from Nyaung U, has now a board showing transport price to Nyaung U, New Bagan and Old Bagan. It's 5000, 7000 and 8000 Kyat. Nevertheless the taxi drivers will refuse to take any passenger for less than 5000 kyat per person, minimum 15000 kyat per car. Don' t let them overcharge you, simply take your luggage and walk some 200 yards to the main road. You'll never get to the main road, though. An honest driver will pop up half a way and offer the right fare. ...

Hiking in Hsipaw

Posted by JimmyW on 11/2/2017 at 09:31

We loved our hiking experience in Hsipaw. It was 3 days long and cost us 70,000 kyat. It had some significant hill climbs, about 4-7 hours of walking per day, occasional stops for food and tea, and a sweet, knowledgeable young guide who spoke decent English and gave us a lot of great local information. Our homestays were great, deep in the hills, no cars and clear, silent nights under the stars. The homes were kinda' simple, but that's the point; you use an outhouse for the toilet, you sleep on ...

Sleeper bus Yangon to Bagan

Posted by hellomoto84 on 21/3/2017 at 00:32

Hi, We recently travelled this route and wanted to share our experience in case it helps anyone else. We booked with Joyous Journeys and contacted them through their Facebook page (JJ-express highway bus). They replied within the hour and gave us all the info. Tickets cost $19 per person for a comfortable air con bus - the seats are 2-1 format so pretty wide and with good leg room (we are 5"11 and 6"2 so this is always important!). While the bus has no toilet it stopped twice along t ...

Begging monks in Myanmar

Posted by hellomoto84 on 17/3/2017 at 06:58

Just an observation as we're currently in Myanmar and have been approached multiple times by monks asking for money. They are not pushy or aggressive but we were really surprised as it's not something we've experienced anywhere else in Asia. Have others come across this or know what the etiquette is? Thank you! ...

Train from Bagan to Mandalay

Posted by JimmyW on 27/1/2017 at 03:29

Just got off the train from Bagan to Mandalay. Here are some details: It cost 1800 kyat per person and left at 7 AM arriving at around 2 PM We arrived at Bagan station at 6:30 AM and easily got a ticket Hold onto your ticket; they check it a few times, including when you leave the station at Mandalay. But my girlfriend lost her ticket and they let her leave. The ride was bumpier and wobblier than any train I'd ever been on--and I once lived on an Indian train for a month, and have taken ...
