How tough are the Keng Tung Treks?

Posted by artyguy on 22/8/2014 at 15:22

Anyone know the weather in November? What to wear? And the level of trek this is. Moderate? Or Extreme? **Here is what one guide says after my prodding to find out how steep I am to expect:** At Pin Tauk area, the climb is around 100 meters up, total walk from a village to another is around 3 hours. At Lahu Shi area, the climb is around 400 meters steep , one way 3 hours walk up, total walk is over 5 hours. Ho Kyim area, the climb is 1 hour over 150 meters steep, but after the trek around ...

3 day Keng Tung Trek, difficulties in trek, cost, and hotel suggestion

Posted by artyguy on 16/8/2014 at 15:14

Hello, a few questions, Have only three days to trek in Keng Tung. In addition I've provided a detailed suggested route and cost of what a local guide has offered for your feedback. Can't do it all, but can do three of the four options. Any idea how challenging the treks are? I'm a young 65 year old guy in reasonably good physical condition. Hiking up for hours up steep hills isn't something I hope to do. But short durations up hills are ok. Any thoughts on which trek would be easier or most di ...

How much is realistic in a week?

Posted by lnj067 on 9/7/2014 at 02:49

Myself and three friends are planning a week in Myanmar at the end of September. I know it's a massive place and we are only really going to be able to get a taste of the country in that time, but we'd like to see as much as we can without just rushing round in a whirlwind. We're looking at flying into Yangon on a Saturday and out of Mandalay the following Sunday to avoid having to loop back to the South and save a bit of time. Is it feasible to spend a couple of days in Yangon, Inle Lake a ...

Myanmar vs Indonesia

Posted by PyroGal on 6/8/2014 at 22:36

Hey everyone! I'm having a really hard time choosing between Burma (Myanmar) and Indonesia. So here are the details: In late September/early October (I know monsoon season) I'll be in Singapore for work. When I finish work (date is uncertain), I'm able to get about 5-6 days extra, that I'm hoping to visit elsewhere in SEA. When I leave I will need to fly out of Singapore again to not loose my ticket home. This will be my First visit to SEA!!! I know Singapore is supposed to be awesome, but ...

Visa extension

Posted by Clare1993 on 11/7/2014 at 01:13

Hi everyone, I'm planning a trip to Burma in November, so far for 28 days. However, I've read in a couple of different places (including the new lonely planet) that it is now possible to extend a tourist visa by 14 days once in country? Has anyone had any experiences doing this? It would make my trip a lot easier if I had 6 weeks rather than 4! Thanks, Clare. ...

Myanmar in Dec 2014

Posted by jesso435 on 27/5/2014 at 18:18

Hello - I am traveling with two other friends to Myanmar for three weeks in December. I know it's at peak season, so I'm trying to get my general itinerary nailed down early so I can book a few guesthouses, but I don't really even know where to start. The new version of Lonely Planet isn't coming until August! This is the very general idea I've come up with for an itinerary. I think a lot of time would be eaten up by heading over to Mrauk U, but everything I've read about it so far sounds inc ...

Free Air Asia transfers to/from Mandalay Airport

Posted by busylizzy on 31/10/2013 at 01:24

If you are flying Bkk -> Mandalay or Mandalay -> Bkk on Air Asia, they are offering free airport transfers from their city office. The trip to/from the airport takes 45-60 minutes, and foer a taxi from the airport, the cost is about 12,000 kyat (private) or 4,000 kyat (shared). I'm not sure about taxi prices TO the airport....) So the FREE bus is a good option! The only condition is that you just need to make your own way to their office (near the south-end of the Palace) - but that s ...

Crossing land borders and travelling by bike in Burma

Dears, I am about to travel by bike in Asia and definitely want to visit Burma. I was happy to hear about a few land crossings open but then the information is a bit unclear to me .. and I am busy doing my planning now. Well, the question is: can I enter Burma, travel there by bike and leave country by land crossing, too? I know I have to obtain visa beforehand and it is for 28 days only. Thank you in advance for your help! ...

Any bloggers in Burma?

Posted by DontForgetToMov on 16/5/2014 at 02:22

Hey everyone! We're planning our next trip to Asia and have Burma at the top of our list of places to see. We're wondering what people's experiences have been like getting around Burma as a budget backpacker and how receptive they are to investigative type journalism. We've found a few great bloggers that have recently been through, but we're hearing mixed reviews. Thought this might be a good forum to ask. Or maybe people know of any good blogs that have written about Burma lately? Cheers eve ...

Mandalay to Bagan to Inle Lake

Posted by igormozzilli on 6/2/2014 at 04:33

Hello, 2 questions I'm looking some infos to plan my trip between, as the topic title say, Mandalay- Bagan -Inle Lake. Anyone knows how much the ticket for the boat from Bagan to Nyaung U and where to buy the ticket? I know there are some different options, a tourist boat faster and expensive and a "normal" boat, I'm looking infos on the second one. My second question is how to get in Inle Lake from Bagan/Nyaung U? is there a Bus or a Train and what do you suggest? Thanks guys for ...

UK bank and credit cards in Burma - a warning

Posted by antoniamitchell on 6/6/2014 at 08:41

Hi everyone, I've just found out from one credit card supplier (Halifax) that they block use all their cards in Burma. I can't use the card at all (either for purchases or for cash advances) in Burma. I'd already called my main bank (Santander) a few days ago to tell them I was going abroad to Burma, and they registered my trip for both my bank card and my credit card and said I was all set. But because of the Halifax problem, I decided to call Santander back and double check - just to be safe. ...

How much cash?

Posted by cblackie on 7/6/2014 at 04:07

Hello all I'll be travelling to Burma for two weeks in July. I have booked and paid for all but a couple of nights accommodation through Agoda, have paid in advance for three internal flights and will have more than one Australian Visa/Mastercard/ATM card with me. With that in mind, and considering how rapidly the situation with financial services (credit card acceptance, ATMs, etc) is changing, I'm wondering if any recent visitors to Burma could offer any advice as to whether I'd still be wis ...

Myanmar itinerary: Which one?

Posted by Marin on 28/8/2013 at 10:36

We are planning a trip to Myanmar in February 2014. We have by now decided which places we would like to see, now it's just a matter of combining them all and placing them in the right order. A travel organsation will arrange the transport, which will probably largely consist of domestic flights and some airconditioned vans/mini buses and a private guide to show us around the sights (and we'll have some time to ourselves as well). Our initial itinerary is as follows*: * I haven't specified any ...
