Mrauk U trekking

Posted by gillj on 8/10/2014 at 06:22

Has anyone any experience of trekking out of Mrauk U with a guide, and staying overnight in a couple of Chin villages? There is a trip which includes this on Ananda travel (http://www.ananda-travel.com/UK/mrauku_chin_ngapali_uk.htm) but they have failed to respond to any of my emails. As has Prince hotel which also appears to offer something similar, though reports are not clear. As getting to Mrauk U is both expensive and time consuming, we don't really want to leave making arrangements un ...

advance booking of guesthouses in high season

Posted by zesti on 25/9/2014 at 03:23

Hello, a friend and I will be traveling in Myanmar from the beginning of December until about the 21st. I have traveled in South East Asia before and usually never book anything except maybe the first night in advance. But I've read that it's advised to book guesthouses in advance in Myanmar, especially during high season. Can anybody confirm if this is really necessary. (I guess I'm secretly hoping they are building a bunch of new guesthouses to handle to influx of tourists) And if it is neces ...

6 days in Yangon? Oct 25 - Oct 30

Posted by artyguy on 21/9/2014 at 12:44

So I realized that having one day in Yangon and then off to the rest of Burma might not be wise, considering 21 hours flying to Burma. Rest and catching up on sleep is important. So the only flight I could get gave me 6 days before my three week tour begins, where committed to flights and hotels. What to do for those 6 days? Go to the Delta? Take sometime for catching up on lost sleep on the beach? And go to which beach? Budget wise could fly to save time. October weather? Still Monsoon? Trav ...

Where to start and finish in Burma?

Posted by gandhim on 29/8/2014 at 10:37

Hi All, I will be travelling in Burma from 22 September through to 16 October. I want to know where is the best place to start and finish my travels during this period in terms of weather and rain. I will be using buses and trains. Should I fly into Mandalay on 22 Sept and work my way down to Yangon because it is drier up north in September? Or should it be the other way round - fly into Yangon in September, work my way up and fly out of Mandalay on 16 October? Is Bagan's weather better ...

6 Days Enough for Yangon/Bagan?

Posted by novalord2 on 9/9/2014 at 11:30

Hello everyone, I have 6 full days in Myanmar in mid-Nov. I was wondering if 6 days would be too much to spend in Yangon and Bagan? Am I selling myself short by only going to those 2 places? If necessary, what 3rd destination would be a good choice? I feel discouraged by the hassle and cost of traveling to Inle. I plan on taking the bus from Yangon to Bagan. I would prefer to not shell out the cash for flights. Also, how critical is it that I book hotels? I was told that November is part of t ...

Suggestion for Myanmar itinerary

Greetings from Jakarta I have a plan to travel in Myanmar this coming October. I have two options for my itinerary, either I go to Inle Lake or skip it. Without Inle Lake: Kuala Lumpur - Yangoon : flight, stay 1 night Yangoon - Mandalay : night bus, is the schedule confirmed at ETD 21:30 ETA 06:00?, stay 2 nights Mandalay - Bagan : night bus, is the schedule confirmed at ETD 22:00 ETA 03:00?, stay one night Bagan - Yangoon : night bus again but I haven't had the schedule yet, anyone knows ...

Booking Flights While in Myanmar - HIGH season

Posted by jesso435 on 30/7/2014 at 18:30

Hello everyone - Some friends and I are going to Myanmar from 10 December through 1 January, at the peak of high season. We have more or less settled on an itinerary which includes all the major tourist sites ( Yangon , Bagan , Mandalay , Inle, etc.). My friend heard from someone who lived there in 2009 that we should book our travel arrangements and flights through an agent before we go, but I would like to book them as we go, to allow more flexibility and not be completely locked into a set ...

Trekking in Burma

Posted by Ramblergirl on 5/7/2010 at 16:42

Hi We are a group of four 'over 50's' travellers, in fact we are already between 55 - 65 years young. We are going to be in Burma for three weeks in February 2011, and would like include some trekking (1 day) into our itinerary. We are all reasonable fit and since we come from Australia, we are also used to the hot weather but not to the humidity. I would like to get your opinion on a couple of things: 1. Where is the best to do 'a not so hard' hike, what we here call 'a bush walk'? We would ...

Kalaw - Sleeping and trekking

Posted by jakbdm on 13/6/2010 at 16:23

LP Guide makes a mistake - Kalaw Don't stay or trek with Harri Singh The most recent Myanmar LP guide recommends 'Harri Singh' and his guest house the '+Golden Lily Guest House'+ for sleeping in Kalaw. After doing exactly that, and talking to many locals at my favourite bar in Myanmar (the Hi Snack and Bar - a real music scene and a memorable WC!), I have found Harri Singh's establishment to be rotten and aggressive. Reasons: Aggressive business tactics - Slander At the Golden Lily GH we wer ...

Where is Moe Na, and can you get to Namsam/Namsang by train

Posted by MarkCLester on 28/8/2014 at 09:16

The railway line to Shwenyaung splits there. One line goes up to Lawksawk to the north of there, and another which, according to the map, bends south and winds it way all the way to Namsang to the east of Shwenyaung, This page http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_railway_stations_in_Burma claims it is also the line to Moena. (see kalak-lawksawk line) This page even implies that there is an afternoon service up there. http://www.traveltomyanmar.com/trainschedule.htm But I cannot locate Moe Na. ...

How tough are the Keng Tung Treks?

Posted by artyguy on 22/8/2014 at 15:22

Anyone know the weather in November? What to wear? And the level of trek this is. Moderate? Or Extreme? **Here is what one guide says after my prodding to find out how steep I am to expect:** At Pin Tauk area, the climb is around 100 meters up, total walk from a village to another is around 3 hours. At Lahu Shi area, the climb is around 400 meters steep , one way 3 hours walk up, total walk is over 5 hours. Ho Kyim area, the climb is 1 hour over 150 meters steep, but after the trek around ...

3 day Keng Tung Trek, difficulties in trek, cost, and hotel suggestion

Posted by artyguy on 16/8/2014 at 15:14

Hello, a few questions, Have only three days to trek in Keng Tung. In addition I've provided a detailed suggested route and cost of what a local guide has offered for your feedback. Can't do it all, but can do three of the four options. Any idea how challenging the treks are? I'm a young 65 year old guy in reasonably good physical condition. Hiking up for hours up steep hills isn't something I hope to do. But short durations up hills are ok. Any thoughts on which trek would be easier or most di ...

How much is realistic in a week?

Posted by lnj067 on 9/7/2014 at 02:49

Myself and three friends are planning a week in Myanmar at the end of September. I know it's a massive place and we are only really going to be able to get a taste of the country in that time, but we'd like to see as much as we can without just rushing round in a whirlwind. We're looking at flying into Yangon on a Saturday and out of Mandalay the following Sunday to avoid having to loop back to the South and save a bit of time. Is it feasible to spend a couple of days in Yangon, Inle Lake a ...

Myanmar vs Indonesia

Posted by PyroGal on 6/8/2014 at 22:36

Hey everyone! I'm having a really hard time choosing between Burma (Myanmar) and Indonesia. So here are the details: In late September/early October (I know monsoon season) I'll be in Singapore for work. When I finish work (date is uncertain), I'm able to get about 5-6 days extra, that I'm hoping to visit elsewhere in SEA. When I leave I will need to fly out of Singapore again to not loose my ticket home. This will be my First visit to SEA!!! I know Singapore is supposed to be awesome, but ...
