I'm travelling around Burma alone and was wondering if anyone was looking for a travel buddy. I fly into Mandalay on the 15th and then thinking of heading to Hsipaw - Bagan - Inle - Beach area - Yangon.
More than happy to change and do whatever if anyone has another trip - I have nothing booked other than the 2 days in Mandalay. Yes, I know this is a huge risk.
Does anyone have any advice on whether I should head to Pyin OoLwin and then head to Hsipaw for some trekking?
If anyone ...
Wondering if there is an overland crossing option from Myanmar to India. After a lot of searching online I've pretty much concluded that it's nearly impossible, but I figured it would be worth asking on here to see if anyone has a more recent information than what I've found online (most posts date to 2012).
I'm coming to Myanmar about 3 weeks from now and wondering whether there are travelers who can help me out about few details below.
1. I'll reach Yangon by plane;
How to get to the backpacker area to find a hostel/guesthouse?
Is taxi only the option? As I'm in tight budget, am thinking for something like a shared minivan like I had in Hanoi airport or maybe a public airport bus, are they available?
2. I'll take a night bus from Yangon to Bagan and scheduled to arrive at 4AM;
I read th ...
Hi everyone, I was planning on going to the Manao festival in Myityina in January 2015. I think I read that it was not held last year does anyone have any information on next years. Thank you... Peter ...
I'm leaving for Burma on Tuesday and just wanting to know what the current ATM situation is like?
I've got a Citibank visa debit plus card and want to know how much cash I should bring vs how much to put on the card.
We were thinking of taking half our budget in cash and leaving half on the card (so in theory, only having to withdraw cash from an ATM once). Would this be doable in Mandalay or Inle Lake (which are about halfway through our trip) ?
One of the documents required for the Burma (Myanmar) Visa is a copy of your arrival/departure flights and/or guesthouse reservation. Can this be a copy of my arrival/departure of S.E. Asia (Bangkok) or do I need to purchase my Yangon flight prior to visa approval and find a guesthouse that does online reservations? I've searched all over online including U.S. and Burma government sites and can't find an answer to this question. I'm hoping all you well traveled folks can help. ...
This recent New York Times piece highlights how terrible this situation has gotten. Here's the link:
I'm departing today for a long island-hopping trip in the Andaman Sea, and I must say that I won't be able to get thoughts of the human trafficking and slavery that goes on there out of my mind. When I see fishing trawlers, I'll inevitably think that there could be slaves on it. Here's an exc ...
So I'm planning roughly 2 weeks in Burma. Making my way from Yangon to the Mae Sot/Myawaddy border overland.
How expensive is Burma in relation to Thailand, Laos etc..?
Also can you think of any must sees along my route? I want to see that Golden rock...
Hoping to get some feedback on when to visit Myanmar.
For 2015 it looks like I have a couple of 2-3 week windows were I could make a visit. One is in July/August, the other is mid/late December.
As this will be my first time I am planning on visiting the top 4 ( Yangon , Inle, Bagan, Mandalay), and would love to sneak in Mawlamyine/Hpa-an if possible. I know July/August is the wet season and I'd likely be soaked in Inle and Yangon and would probably need to pass on the south. December would ...

I'd love to get some input on a potential Burma itinerary from this well-traveled readership. Basically this is a bus, train and ferry trip starting in Phuket and going north to Yangon.
I'll be traveling in a group of five people right at the end of December and beginning of January, and we have about 10-12 days to play with. We want to see the Mergui islands, explore some out-of-the-way beaches and also check out Yangon.
We're on something of a budget, so a Mergui dive safari or cruise is pro ...
Hello to all the passionate travellers out there!
My girlfriend and me plan to cross Myanmar with our own car in either August or September this year (2014) as part of our raod trip from Australia all the way back to Germany. According to our current knowledge crossing this beautiful country is not as difficult as it used to be. Mainly it is a matter of money. Since the government still charges high prices on entering with own cars (using a local licensed tour operator is mandatory). These costs ...
So I understand that I need to bring crisp US $100. And that there are still plenty of ATM's to exchange for the local money.
What denominations is recommended to bring to Myanmar besides $100? I also understand that certain entrance fees are require US dollars... But they won't take $100?
And how to keep them safe and crisp while traveling? Not all hotels have room safes and how safe is it to give the front desk $1000 US dollars? Keeping the money in my money belt will certainly crumple the d ...
We are planning on doing the 3 day trek from Kalaw to Inle Lake. Our research so far into companies operating this trek is a very mixed bag of rave reviews and scathing reviews - often of the same company. It would appear that there is a lot of competition between the companies, who seem to be relying on writing false reviews to make themselves look good or their competition look bad. I am hoping to get some real reviews from travelfish readers who have actually used the companies. Even bet ...
Have five days in Yangon which everyone saids is too many days. So I can either cut back on the days and fly up to Bagan earlier. Rather then have 4 nights in Bagan I can five days.
Any thoughts on this itinerary, get a driver to take me to these locations:
First day: Yangon to Hpa-an
Second day: Hpa-an to on the river Mawlamyine
Thrid day: Mawlamyine to Yangon
Any thoughts or suggestions appreciated. ...
Has anyone any experience of trekking out of Mrauk U with a guide, and staying overnight in a couple of Chin villages? There is a trip which includes this on Ananda travel (http://www.ananda-travel.com/UK/mrauku_chin_ngapali_uk.htm) but they have failed to respond to any of my emails. As has Prince hotel which also appears to offer something similar, though reports are not clear. As getting to Mrauk U is both expensive and time consuming, we don't really want to leave making arrangements un ...
a friend and I will be traveling in Myanmar from the beginning of December until about the 21st. I have traveled in South East Asia before and usually never book anything except maybe the first night in advance. But I've read that it's advised to book guesthouses in advance in Myanmar, especially during high season. Can anybody confirm if this is really necessary. (I guess I'm secretly hoping they are building a bunch of new guesthouses to handle to influx of tourists) And if it is neces ...
So I realized that having one day in Yangon and then off to the rest of Burma might not be wise, considering 21 hours flying to Burma. Rest and catching up on sleep is important. So the only flight I could get gave me 6 days before my three week tour begins, where committed to flights and hotels.
What to do for those 6 days? Go to the Delta? Take sometime for catching up on lost sleep on the beach? And go to which beach? Budget wise could fly to save time. October weather? Still Monsoon? Trav ...
