Sleeper bus Yangon to Bagan

Posted by hellomoto84 on 21/3/2017 at 00:32

Hi, We recently travelled this route and wanted to share our experience in case it helps anyone else. We booked with Joyous Journeys and contacted them through their Facebook page (JJ-express highway bus). They replied within the hour and gave us all the info. Tickets cost $19 per person for a comfortable air con bus - the seats are 2-1 format so pretty wide and with good leg room (we are 5"11 and 6"2 so this is always important!). While the bus has no toilet it stopped twice along t ...

Begging monks in Myanmar

Posted by hellomoto84 on 17/3/2017 at 06:58

Just an observation as we're currently in Myanmar and have been approached multiple times by monks asking for money. They are not pushy or aggressive but we were really surprised as it's not something we've experienced anywhere else in Asia. Have others come across this or know what the etiquette is? Thank you! ...

Tachilek airport to border taxi fare

Posted by lucasan on 26/2/2017 at 00:37

Tuk tuk and taxi drivers at the airport charge 4000 kyat per person to take you to the border, minimum 12000 kyat per car. Just walk out of the airport to the exit gate. It's only some 300 meter away but the tuk tuk fare magically drops at 2000 kyat per person... ...

Train from Bagan to Mandalay

Posted by JimmyW on 27/1/2017 at 03:29

Just got off the train from Bagan to Mandalay. Here are some details: It cost 1800 kyat per person and left at 7 AM arriving at around 2 PM We arrived at Bagan station at 6:30 AM and easily got a ticket Hold onto your ticket; they check it a few times, including when you leave the station at Mandalay. But my girlfriend lost her ticket and they let her leave. The ride was bumpier and wobblier than any train I'd ever been on--and I once lived on an Indian train for a month, and have taken ...

Arriving in Burma in January 2017

Posted by JimmyW on 24/1/2017 at 02:16

My girlfriend and I arrived in Burma last week and here are a few things we learned: Though the e-visa requires you to have proof of onward journey and sufficient funds for your stay, but they didn't ask for proof of either at the airport. You can pay for everything in Kyat, and Yangon and Bagan have plenty of ATMs. We brought crisp post-2009 $100 US bills, but haven't used them yet. Take the local train around Yangon, it's interesting. You can hop on and hop off in different towns, and i ...

Southern Burma advice please

We have two weeks to travel from Kawthoung to Yangon and at this stage we're looking to stay at Kawthoung (1 night), Meike (2 nights), Dawei and beaches (4nights), Ye (3 nights), Mawlamyine (2 nights), Hpa An (3 nights) then on to Yangon to head home. We will fly to reduce travel time if we can if it's too long by bus. Is there a town here that is just not worth the visit to enable us to see and do more somewhere else? Have we missed anywhere we should go? Thanks, Pete ...

Hi We have three weeks to explore Myanmar. We have a week in Yangon and a week exploring Bagan, Monywa and Mandalay. We then have a week to spend elsewhere. We are looking at three options: 1) bus Yangon/Mawlamyine return and explore that area (no flights available) 2) flyYangon/Dawei return - ditto, or 3) fly Yangon/Myeik return - ditto. Sadly we have to fly as we are limited with time! We are street photographers so need plenty of people and interesting street life to capture! But we ...

Nyaungshwe to Loikaw

Posted by BreadtagAsia on 5/1/2017 at 06:02

We have just asked the travel agency thu thu in Nyaungshe about boat travel to Loikaw. They say it costs $150 US for a one day trip to Phekon and $200 if you stay overnight. Can one get out of Nyaungshe and then take a public boat to Phekon? Seems excessive and we are in no hurry. We are Australian and with the exchange rate $150 US is a lot of money for us. The other way seems relatively easy! Actually -there is a public boat. We took it in the opposite direction (Phekhon to Nyaungshwe)in Jan ...

Myawaddy rooms

Posted by Herbie47 on 17/11/2016 at 09:09

I was planning on staying in Myawaddy on my exit from Myanmar but when I phoned up to check rooms were available I was informed by my first 2 choices River View Guesthouse and Shwe Wut Hlwar Motel that they no longer accept foreigners. My last choice Ngwe Setkar Hotels 2 and 1 wanted 35,000 kyat for room with bathroom and 17,000 kyat for one without, these were for single person with breakfast. I thought these prices were too high so I decided to go straight to Mae Sot where I got a reasonab ...

Taxis overcharging from Bagan bus terminal to Nyuang Oo

Posted by HeidiSmith on 3/2/2015 at 03:48

Taxis/small trucks are seriously overcharging travellers at the new bus terminal in Nyuang Oo for transport into the town. We arrived in the afternoon on a day bus from Yangon to be hustled (the most intense hustle we experienced in Myanmar but nothing like some other countries) by the touts for transport into Nyuang Oo, which is about 5 km away. The touts started out at 5000 kyat a person (there were four of us) which was ridiculous for that distance. That would be 20,000 or $20.00 US for ...
