Burma in April/May (Yangon, Ngapali, Bagan)

Posted by gugavieira on 15/4/2015 at 04:57

Hi All, After a lot of reading here on Travefish the time has come to make my first post. Hopefully the first of many more to come. This forum already helped me to plan a big part of my trip and now I'm struggling to plan the Burma part. The earliest we can get to Southeast Asia is the 27th of April. We arrive in BKK and plan to spend the night to take the earliest flight to Burma the next morning. We want to get 3 places covered in 2 weeks: Yangon , Ngapali Beach and Baga ...

Return Ticket, E-Visa

Posted by gatoguts on 20/1/2015 at 16:35

Has anyone recently had any problems entering Yangon or elsewhere in Myanmar without a return ticket? Does the immigration officer question you at all about the return ticket? I do have a return ticket from Bangkok, should that suffice? Also, I will be entering Yangon with a visa approval letter obtained online with the new e-visa system. Has anyone had any problems with that? ...

Myanmar & Thingyan (Burmese Water Festival) - Yes or No?

Posted by xeorwin on 20/1/2015 at 14:25

Hey! I'm planning a trip to Myanmar (around 18 days) somewhere in March-April. I'll be following the typical tourist trail (Yangon, Bagan, Mandalay, Inle Lake, possibly some trekking...) but I'm a bit undecided on whether or not I should include the Thingyan festival (Burmese New Year, which will take place between the 14th and 21st of April) in my travel date: - On one hand, it sounds like fun and a great way to experience a bit of the culture. - On the other hand, I've heard that transpor ...

Going to Myanmar for Thingyan but how does one get around the country????

Posted by BeachloverPH on 21/3/2015 at 10:16

Hi there! I just want to know if anyone here knows an agent or a hotel that can help us get bus tickets to Bagan from Yangon on April 10 (and conversely from Bagan to Yangon on April 12). JJ Express already told me that online reservation is not possible before, during and a few days after Thingyan. I might consider riding their train but I really prefer to take a bus. Also, anyone here who will be traveling to Myanmar on April 9-13 please let me know. I am traveling with a friend and ...

solo woman safety

Posted by sunlvr on 20/3/2015 at 09:47

Hi all, How safe is Yangon for a solo female traveler? I'm doing a trip to Laos arriving in Bangkok and will be there several days before my traveling companions. We've already planned on several days in Bangkok so I'm looking at going somewhere different. I was thinking a quick visit to Yangon would be great (3 days). I've traveled alone before but only in the States. Would you recommend this? My other option would be Siem Reap for those few days. Appreciate your advice. Thanks! ...

Feedback on 20 day itinerary

Posted by jbach08 on 14/3/2015 at 12:50

Hey Travelfish Community, I am headed back on the road for a brief 3 week trip to Burma (with a day stopover in Bangkok). Below is a draft itinerary. I am looking for feedback on timing, if there are things that should be added/ removed, and/or reorganized to make for easier travels. About me: I am a 25 year old guy who has traveled throughout southeast asia and central america. I like to stay at mostly budget hostels, and guesthouses and try to eat at mostly 'local' places. I will be travelin ...

My experience with ATMs, Kyat and US Funds in Myanmar

Posted by HeidiSmith on 3/2/2015 at 04:09

I found it difficult to get a clear answer on what kind of currency I would need in Myanmar but now I know, after spending one month there. This info might be useful for your trip. I used my Visa Debit Card (which I use in Canada to debit my checking account) at ATMs to get kyat. Unless you are going to a remote area, there should be an ATM in the town. The maximum I could take out was 300,000 (about $300.00 USD) per day and there was a fee"¦.sorry can't remember the amount). I'd be g ...

Changing Japanese yen to kyat

Posted by kitebo on 10/3/2015 at 05:51

Hi, I'll be travelling to Burma on Saturday for two weeks, and was wondering if it is currently possible to exchange Japanese yen to kyat (at Yangon Airport or in town)? I understand the most common currencies are EUR, USD and SGD - otherwise I'll try to exchange JPY for USD, but would obviously like to avoid the extra currency exchange fees. Thanks! ...

Travel itinerary draft

Hi all, I am trying to plan a trip to Myanmar some time this year and would like to hear helpful opinions and input from all of you. I am planning to travel as follows and assuming that I will be travelling using bus instead of plane. Would the following route be good enough? Yangon (i will be arriving here) - Bagan - Mandalay - Inle Or would i be better off traveling from Yangon to Mandalay first then Bagan and Inle? Also, I am planning to include the train through Goteik Viaduct too ...

Violent attack on a military convoy between Hsipaw and Kyaukme

Posted by pisike08 on 20/2/2015 at 07:30

Read some news about recent violent attack on a military convoy between Hsipaw and Kyaukme. Does anyone have recent contact or experience in that area? Does it affect or have influence in everyday life around Hsipaw, trekking to close villages is currently not an option or how? If there are or might be in near future restrictions for moving around + a threat ending up in between some attack then I guess it's not wise to stick my nose in that area at the moment? I was planing to do some trek ...

Overstaying your visa in Myanmar- just pay the fine.

Posted by HeidiSmith on 3/2/2015 at 04:15

Hello I couldn't find a clear answer on overstaying a 28 day tourist visa for Myanmar before my trip; I felt uncomfortable disobeying the law in a country like Myanmar without a clear answer: however after talking to locals, people in the tourist industry, another traveler who obtained advice from the Myanmar embassy in Canada, I learned that the immigration authorities are happy to collect a fine from travellers for overstaying. PLUS, there was a notice to travellers posted on a large sign a ...

6 days 5 nights: Myanmar Trip Advisory and Air Safety Concern

Posted by totoro on 25/1/2015 at 21:14

Hi All, First time visit to Myanmar. Tentative plan as followed: Day 1: Arrival Yangon . Day 2: Inle Lake (by air if possible) Day 4: Return Yangon (by air if possible) Day 6: Depart Yangon Here's my biggest concern; air safety for domestic airline. Recent research into this topic doesn't engender confidence. Would love to hear from Burmese expert on this. I do notice that most of the planes grounded in the reports are Chinese-made. So any domestic airline for consideration would need to hav ...

Myawaddy to Mawlamyine by bus, shared taxi

Posted by frogfrog on 20/1/2015 at 10:09

Hi there I'm planning to travel to Myanmar by land - through Myawaddy / Mae Sot border crossing. Want to go to Mawlamyine. Did some research and discovered that the route is alternate day one-way, thus buses go there every second day only. I just wonder if there is a place on earth where I could check on what days they go? I guess I could find that out at some travel agency near the border in Thailand... but not too sure what to do with hostel booking then, since I would find it out only a day ...
