Overstaying your visa in Myanmar- just pay the fine.

Posted by HeidiSmith on 3/2/2015 at 04:15

Hello I couldn't find a clear answer on overstaying a 28 day tourist visa for Myanmar before my trip; I felt uncomfortable disobeying the law in a country like Myanmar without a clear answer: however after talking to locals, people in the tourist industry, another traveler who obtained advice from the Myanmar embassy in Canada, I learned that the immigration authorities are happy to collect a fine from travellers for overstaying. PLUS, there was a notice to travellers posted on a large sign a ...

Taxis overcharging from Bagan bus terminal to Nyuang Oo

Posted by HeidiSmith on 3/2/2015 at 03:48

Taxis/small trucks are seriously overcharging travellers at the new bus terminal in Nyuang Oo for transport into the town. We arrived in the afternoon on a day bus from Yangon to be hustled (the most intense hustle we experienced in Myanmar but nothing like some other countries) by the touts for transport into Nyuang Oo, which is about 5 km away. The touts started out at 5000 kyat a person (there were four of us) which was ridiculous for that distance. That would be 20,000 or $20.00 US for ...

Northern Thailand in and out of Burma and back to BKK

Posted by mikal83 on 28/1/2015 at 12:17

Our trip ends in Chiang rai in mid december but we thought, mmmmmmmmmmm, could we make a swing thru Burma and across to Bangkok instead of just getting the bus/train back to BKK? Is there a decent route that you would recommend we could take for say 7-10 days??? ...

6 days 5 nights: Myanmar Trip Advisory and Air Safety Concern

Posted by totoro on 25/1/2015 at 21:14

Hi All, First time visit to Myanmar. Tentative plan as followed: Day 1: Arrival Yangon . Day 2: Inle Lake (by air if possible) Day 4: Return Yangon (by air if possible) Day 6: Depart Yangon Here's my biggest concern; air safety for domestic airline. Recent research into this topic doesn't engender confidence. Would love to hear from Burmese expert on this. I do notice that most of the planes grounded in the reports are Chinese-made. So any domestic airline for consideration would need to hav ...

Myawaddy to Mawlamyine by bus, shared taxi

Posted by frogfrog on 20/1/2015 at 10:09

Hi there I'm planning to travel to Myanmar by land - through Myawaddy / Mae Sot border crossing. Want to go to Mawlamyine. Did some research and discovered that the route is alternate day one-way, thus buses go there every second day only. I just wonder if there is a place on earth where I could check on what days they go? I guess I could find that out at some travel agency near the border in Thailand... but not too sure what to do with hostel booking then, since I would find it out only a day ...

Hsipaw and Pwin Oo Lwin vs Mawlamyine and Hpa An

Posted by CaptainScott on 7/1/2015 at 10:13

Hi folks, I am thinking about taking a trip to Burma in November this year for around 3 weeks. It's my first time in Burma so will be doing the 'big four' for a reasonable amount of time in each place. In addition I would either like to visit Pwin Oo Lwin/Hsipaw or Mawlamyine/Hpa An (probably Golden Rock too if there's time). Timewise, it's a case of one or the other, so I was really wondering which place was best. I am also a solo female traveller so if it was going to be really isolated of a ...

Mandalay to Hsipaw

Posted by Jofferson on 27/11/2014 at 06:15

I am traveling from Mandalay to Hsipaw on Dec 23rd and returning to Mandalay on December 26th. My current plan is to catch a bus/taxi from Mandalay to Hsipaw, stay one night. then catch the train at 9:30am to Pyin Oo Lwin and stay there two nights before heading back to Mandalay. A few questions for anyone who has been in this area: 1) Is this plan a good one or is it better to catch the train out of Mandalay and take the long day trip? And then catch a bus/taxi back to Pyin Oo Lwin. Can I b ...

Hiring a car and driver in burma

Posted by treborchef on 31/12/2014 at 01:14

hi, We are planning a trip late February to Burma.Looking at travel options we wondered if anyone had any experiences in using a private car and driver for some of the journeys to allow us to interact more with locals. We have contacted a local agent in Yangon and $650 quoted for 3days seems very expensive, he also quoted $2000 for 14 days. Any help greatly appreciate. Rob ...

Hi, I'm travelling around Burma alone and was wondering if anyone was looking for a travel buddy. I fly into Mandalay on the 15th and then thinking of heading to Hsipaw - Bagan - Inle - Beach area - Yangon. More than happy to change and do whatever if anyone has another trip - I have nothing booked other than the 2 days in Mandalay. Yes, I know this is a huge risk. Burma to India - overland?

Posted by lcavanagh on 4/11/2014 at 23:53

Hi all, Wondering if there is an overland crossing option from Myanmar to India. After a lot of searching online I've pretty much concluded that it's nearly impossible, but I figured it would be worth asking on here to see if anyone has a more recent information than what I've found online (most posts date to 2012). Cheers! ...

Myanmar trip- some more questions

Posted by ssgal on 9/10/2014 at 08:20

Hi, I'm coming to Myanmar about 3 weeks from now and wondering whether there are travelers who can help me out about few details below. 1. I'll reach Yangon by plane; How to get to the backpacker area to find a hostel/guesthouse? Is taxi only the option? As I'm in tight budget, am thinking for something like a shared minivan like I had in Hanoi airport or maybe a public airport bus, are they available? 2. I'll take a night bus from Yangon to Bagan and scheduled to arrive at 4AM; I read th ...

USD vs Visa Debit card

Posted by Clare1993 on 6/11/2014 at 04:35

Hey, I'm leaving for Burma on Tuesday and just wanting to know what the current ATM situation is like? I've got a Citibank visa debit plus card and want to know how much cash I should bring vs how much to put on the card. We were thinking of taking half our budget in cash and leaving half on the card (so in theory, only having to withdraw cash from an ATM once). Would this be doable in Mandalay or Inle Lake (which are about halfway through our trip) ? Thanks! ...

Visa question

Posted by sunlvr on 12/11/2014 at 09:53

One of the documents required for the Burma (Myanmar) Visa is a copy of your arrival/departure flights and/or guesthouse reservation. Can this be a copy of my arrival/departure of S.E. Asia (Bangkok) or do I need to purchase my Yangon flight prior to visa approval and find a guesthouse that does online reservations? I've searched all over online including U.S. and Burma government sites and can't find an answer to this question. I'm hoping all you well traveled folks can help. ...

Myanmar policys message to Muslims: Get out

Posted by DLuek on 11/11/2014 at 18:32

This recent New York Times piece highlights how terrible this situation has gotten. Here's the link: I'm departing today for a long island-hopping trip in the Andaman Sea, and I must say that I won't be able to get thoughts of the human trafficking and slavery that goes on there out of my mind. When I see fishing trawlers, I'll inevitably think that there could be slaves on it. Here's an exc ...
