First timer, and with my dad too!

Posted by twsread on 27/1/2011 at 04:00

Hi all, I've just been reading through a whole load of posts about a massive amount and gotta say this is an excellent site! I was hoping I could ask some of you experienced travellers for some advice? My father has recently decided he's missed out on a lot in life by not being very adventurous, something I was more than happy to help out with. As such we are planning three weeks (not long enough I know) to SE asia. My dad has always been very keen to see Angkor Wat and I'd love to explor ...

kampot to HCMC warning

Posted by jdexpat on 27/1/2011 at 15:10

We stayed in Le Java Blueu (Bleue?) hotel. $35 2 beds. Beautiful room. Its here we booked our bus ticket to HCMC. We were told 4 1/2 hours which seemed believable looking at the map. In the morning we were told 7 1/2 hours. Oh well, nevermind. Turned out that our hotel had booked with the guy across the road know as 'Ron'. He came to talk to us at breakfast. He does not have typical Khmer facial features and as at writing has a dry cough and comes across a little slimy. He told us our tickets wo ...

Chong Mek to Siem Reap Adventure

Posted by lad on 25/1/2011 at 20:38

I have just returned from an unforgettable trip using the resources of Mongkheang from Angkor Grand Adventure Tours. My travel partner were met at Chong Mek on the Lao/Thai border and transferred via private Songthiew to the remote Chong Sa Ngam border crossing in the North of Cambodia. After an overnight stay in a very comfortable guest house in Anlong Veng we started our cycling south from the grave site of the infamous Pol Pot. The best way to appreciate the Khmer people and their way of ...

Sihanoukville bus station

Posted by dannyengland on 11/9/2006 at 08:23

The experience of being hasseled by moto drivers has just got worse now you are attacked by Farangs prompoting thier guest houses. Mick and Craigs, Cool Banana The Curry House and Monkey Republic. The lady from Monkey Republic was so pushy and agressive that it was scarry. It is my believe that all flyes should be distributed at the bus station by Cambodian Nationals or banned altogether. We noticed a few Cambodians handing out flyers who were polite and seemed intimidated by the Farangs. The ge ...

Siem Reap with very young ones

Posted by Shaktipalooza on 10/2/2010 at 04:07

Hello all, I'm very interested in traveling to Cambodia this coming May with my family. Our children will be 18 months and nearly 4 years on arrival. Since they're so young I figure we'd stay in Siem Reap for 10 days, making day trips. I'm concerned about keeping the little ones healthy. As our last trip to India with the oldest was a disaster. Our toddler went through 28 days of vomiting and diarrhea was certainly memorable, but not something I'd like to repeat. Does Siem Reap compar ...

Bangkok to Siem Reap overland with two young children

Posted by lolarosaliu on 19/1/2011 at 13:34

I'm planning travel from Bangkok to Siem Reap overland with two boys ages 6 and 9. I wonder if anyone has any feedback as to whether this would be feasible. I have read extensively about the long trip, the touts, the waiting around and visa hasslers. So I know that it is an adventure which I'm up for but need to consider if it would be something my kids can handle -- or maybe I'm up for it but should be sane and just fly.... Also, any feedback as to how safe it is? Not just road conditio ...

Itnerary advice and a couple of questions for Cambodia trip

Posted by eveliens on 26/12/2010 at 08:24

Hi, I'll be visiting Cambodia for two weeks in January. I have been reading up on things and am really excited. I will, unfortunately, be going alone as my travel companions canceled. There are a few things: I was planning to only spend my time in three areas: PP, Siem Reap, and Kraite. The majority of the time would be spent in SR (5 or 6 days) with a few days for Kraite and PP. I'm not into the party scene and would like to spend time relaxing. Does this sound doable? I don't have any advan ...

single parent and 3yr old travelling

Posted by TracynJesse07 on 12/1/2011 at 05:08

Can anyone give me any advice. I am considering travelling in Cambodia, as a single female with a 3 year old child, for approximately 4 weeks from the end of this month. I am wondering how sensible this would be and if anyone has any tips on making it easier. I am also interested in any other destination that anyone would recommend. Too many places not enough time I fear. Will be grateful for any suggestions. ...

Family Places to Stay in Snooky

Posted by swatral on 19/1/2011 at 18:10

We are returning to Cambodia this year. Last year we went to Siem Reap and this year we want to return to see more. Visiting PP, Kep and Kampot . I also want to visit Sihanoukville with some hesitation – seems to get a pretty bad rap but also some people like it - I feel like I need to check it out and make up my own mind as otherwise I will feel I missed out and always wonder. I am travelling with my husband and 12 year old son and am having a hard time trying to decide somewhere to stay. Not ...

Thoughts from the Lakeside

Posted by sayadian on 27/12/2010 at 10:25

Don't believe the tuk-tuks when you arrive in Phnom Penh and they tell you the Boueng Kok Lakeside area is gone.In many respects it's even more colourful than it used to be as all the old characters are still here.A lot of the guesthouses near the lake have been knocked down and everyday another building is demolished, it's a bit like teeth being extracted. There are still some places to stay and still good food to eat.The locals are still here and the expats mull over their coffee next to the ...

Aranyaprathet to Ventiane overland?

Posted by textibule on 28/11/2010 at 20:45

Hello all. Been reading the great info on this site about going from BKK to Siam Reap via Aranyaprathet which I plan doing mid-january 2011. When I'm done in SR, I was considering going back to Aranyaprathet and then, if such a thing exists, taking a bus from there into Nong Khai , just before the Laos border at Vientiane. My objective is to avoid going back to BKK just in order to catch the train that exists to Nong Khai and on through the Laos leg of my trip. Any thoughts? Is this a silly w ...

Cambodia: Thai baht exchange for Riel ?

Posted by 5acrefarmer on 8/1/2011 at 14:34

Hi Crossing into Cambodia from Thai very soon. I'll have about 3000 baht in my pocket and wondering if I should exchange that for US$ or Cambodian Riel. May only be in Cambodia for 2 weeks but think I'd get to spend the Riel although I also wonder if US$ are used so much I'll get stuck with the Riel. I have plenty of US$ already. Also can anyone recommend which side of the border I would get a better exchange rate? Thanks, Ian ...
