Budgeting for 6 weeks - Vietnam, Cambodia & Thailand

Posted by ltran on 21/2/2011 at 15:06

Hey everyone! My boyfriend and I are planning to spend about 6 weeks between the 3 countries. I know it's not as much time as I would like, but I think we can manage. I am a bit worried about our budget. We already have accommodations for our Vietnam portion of our trip but how much do you think we need for the rest of it? We have already decided that we are busing to Phnom Penh and than taking a train to Bangkok. In terms of accommodations and food, how much would you think is enough? Any ...

Travel agency warning- UNSEEN

Posted by blpratt on 14/1/2009 at 19:29

I just posted a response to someone's trip planning query, but I'll post a topic here as well: Please avoid Unseen Travel near Khao San in Bangkok, they charge at least double the price and most hotels and guesthouses we've talked to in order to change undesirable reservations have blacklisted them and no longer book through their agency. Just a heads up. ...

Living in SEA for 2 months

Posted by travelinchen on 30/1/2011 at 20:45

Hey guys, I wasn't sure where to post this, really, so I post it here. After traveling to Thailand in about a months time, we are now seriously thinking of spending July and August of this year in SEA. That is, we would like to rent a flat or a house for 2 months (we will have to do some work, so internet is quite important). We figured since we won't have a flat during this time here in europe anyway, we could just as well go to SEA. My question now is, we are hoping to spend less during these ...

question about the condition of US bills

Posted by ratyoke on 10/1/2011 at 17:36

Hi everyone this is my first post. I'm going to Thailand tomorrow, and then Cambodia probably next week. I read that in Cambodia if there are any marks or tears in a US bill no one will accept it. This is ALL bills? Even one dollar bills, or just larger bills? From what I have read it seems that its all bills that must be new. My main question is what about folds? I like to fold my money and half and put it in my front pocket. Am I going to be "ruining" all my money if I do tha ...

Budget concerns!

Posted by chicoelnino on 21/1/2011 at 01:38

Myself and my girlfriend will be spending just under 7 months in SE asia (Thailand, Laos, Vietnam, Cambodia and Indonesia) which is 27 weeks in total. We will have €12,000 to live on over there for that duration. This works out at €444 per week(£375) or €63 per day(£53) Are we cutting this a little thin? We don't drink alot...maybe once every 2 weeks. We don't mind staying in backpackers places as long as we have our own private room, but we would like to do some sights etc. I know so ...

euros/dolars

Posted by Indoluso on 5/6/2010 at 16:38

Hi all, I've read that dolars are accepted and are the first currency after local currencies. The problem is that with the euro losing a lot towards the dollar two exchanges (one at home to have dollars in cash and eventually another in Vietnam/Cambodia to get local currency) might make me lose a lot of money in rates. So the question is if taking euros instead of dollars would be ok. Can one change euros at most places in Indochina? For example in Southern Laos, do they accept euros? Jewelleri ...

currency swap

Posted by joeaddison79 on 5/1/2011 at 02:18

I have VND and want USD. It's so my Vietnamese girlfriend can buy a computer while she's here (1 month B2 visa to visit my family). We don't want to use the bank rates (bad deal). If you're going to Vietnam and want to swap currency with me at the current market rate (much better than what you'll do at a bank in Vietnam, the airport, or even an ATM because of international transaction fees), give me an email at: joeaddison79@gmail.com NOTE: We are in Michigan ...

NZers - Why use a credit card in Thailand?

Posted by danceswithrose on 28/12/2010 at 15:57

I have been in Thailand for 3 months so far and have never needed a credit card. As long as you have access to internet banking you can get a debit (visa) card and transfer money from your accounts into that. Then you just need to go to an ATM and take the money out. Your bank will charge you $6NZ (plus conversion and some other small fee) and you are charged a fee this end 150BHT. I take out 20,000 BHT at a time so its as cheap as chips!! The beauty of this debit card is also that if it is st ...

How much USD to bring ? And what about travellers cheques?

Posted by nickolt on 25/10/2010 at 10:57

Hello ! I've been reading through the different threads to try and understand the whole money situation in SE Asia. From what I've read, its good to use a combination of local currency, with american dollars as a backup. For a 5 month trip, how much american money would you reccomend I bring to start with? My bf and I will be travelling through Cambodia, Laos, Thailand, Vietnam, and the Phillipines. We will be starting off in Manila. Is it possible to withdraw more American money as we are tr ...

Safe to keep money/TC/passport in hostel locker?

Posted by SailorBoy on 26/11/2010 at 12:29

Hi.. I shall be travelling to SEA (thailand ,laos, combodia, vietnam) for 7 weeks starting 1 dec ( first time solo). I'm carrying about $500 in cash, $1000 in travellers cheques, and another $2000 in my visa prepaid travel card. My queries are: 1. Is this too much/too little/just right? ( my flights in and out of Bangkok are already paid for..I plan to stay in reasonably priced hostels, avoid fancy restaurants, and travel by road) 2. Which ones(cash/TC/card) are to be used in which places? 3. Is ...

How long will it last

Posted by ChrisJenko on 4/11/2010 at 13:43

Hi all. Long time reader first time poster, in late stages of finalizing a trip to the SEA region ASAP. Ok originally this was intended to be a 2 year odyssey but due to unforseen circumstances the original budget goal hasn't come to fruition and i dont want to wait any longer, i need to get away and have a holiday. i havent given up on the hope of spending 12 + mths away but am pretty much confined to SEA ( which mind you is not a bad thing) over the last 18 mths i have saved AU $15000, now ...

3 Months vs. 4 Months

Posted by thatvaletguy on 25/10/2010 at 07:35

Ahhhh, I'm finally a member after all this time of just reading other people's posts. So here is my first post with Travelfish, and here we go: What would be the better alternative? 3 Months traveling Southeast Asia and spending "Fat Stacks" OR 4 months and being on a limited budget? Here are some details about me and my trip that might make this easier. -I'm looking at $30 a day for the 4 month trip, but I feel like that wouldn't be enough -I LOVE to party, love women, beer and the ...

Is USD still best currency for south east asia?

Posted by siddy on 22/10/2010 at 06:32

Traditionally, walking around with $1 USD's was ideal, but with the Baht and other currencies regaining strength much faster than the USD, is that still the case? Surly the USD prices for things in Thailand etc have been jacked up in the last 6months? Im converting from AUD, should I still get USD's or baht, dong etc? (wanted to spend in Thailand, Cambodia and Vietnam) ...

My payal was hacked - be careful with internet/passwords

Posted by mattocmd on 16/10/2010 at 12:12

Greetings! The past few days have been very stressful as my paypal account was hacked and a purchase of around $400 was made to a (legitimate) Chinese online shopping website. Because I spend too much time on my computer, I noticed the charge as soon as it happened and reported it before the website shipped the product. For the record, in the event that the website had shipped the product, I still wouldn't have been held responsible. Anyway, just be careful when using your passwords in dodgy ...
