1 month SEA budget

Posted by iBredo on 10/10/2013 at 04:12

Hi! A friend and I have booked a 33 day guided tour through south east Asia(Thailand, Laos, Vietnam then Cambodia). Plus two days spare time either side. All our travelling, accommodation and sight seeing is paid already. How much can we expect to pay(USD) per day for food, drinks and some partying? We've also been told to expect to tip the guide roughly $3 per day per person, on top of the charge. Also tipping at restaurants and bell boys. We're from Australia and tipping is definitely not a hu ...

Coming back to nothing

Posted by katieandchris on 1/8/2013 at 13:21

Not sure if this is the right place to post this but I am after some advice. We are thinking of travelling for 4-5 months across SE Asia next year. We currently rent and will go when our current lease runs out. We will be storing our cars and furniture with family and we will both need to leave our jobs. I am so excited about this and it's the chance if a lifetime but... My major concern is when we come back (I know I shouldn't even be thinking about that when we haven't even left yet but that's ...

Hello and reassurance?!

Posted by bmovieneil on 27/9/2013 at 06:39

Hi to all - newbie here. Firstly, hello - I've spent a fair amount of time reading the forum and it seems that this is a far more valuable (and far more friendly!) resource than certain other travel forums (mentioning no names *cough*..TT....) Anyway.... my wife and I are are due to head off on a RTW trip in just over 9 months now. Having spent the past 2 years saving, reading, researching etc etc I am fairly confident in my figures and timescales etc. However, after spending the morning readin ...

2 month budget

Posted by Bretteb on 25/9/2013 at 11:00

Hey guys. I was hoping you could give me a little help with a budget in Southeast Asia. I will be there solo from January 3rd through March 11th, 67 days. I plan on doing 3 countries, Thailand, Cambodia and Vietnam. I have already booked flights and paid for travel insurance, immunizations etc. I was hoping to get a realistic view of my budget while I'm there. I plan to stay in hostels and for the most part travel overland, eat street food, but drink most nights. A budget of $50 a day ...

Budget in SEA

Posted by seatrips on 24/9/2013 at 21:22

I'm travelling with my partner in SEA for 5 months covering Vietnam, Laos, Cambodia, Thailand (northern). We've budgeted $100/day excluding flights/transportation/pre-departure items. Is this do-able without having to skip out on too many activities/drinks at the bar and other little comforts? ...

landing temporary work in SEA, how realistic is it?

Posted by magdalena88 on 3/9/2013 at 23:25

Hey Guys, So I'll be heading to SEA on a one-way ticket come January 2014. I'd like to travel the region for at least 4 months, on a budget of $5,000(US). I intend to visit: Thailand, Laos, Cambodia, Vietnam, and Myanmar. My itinerary is open, time isn't an issue, but money is. Therefore, I'm open to the idea of working for weeks or months on end throughout my trip, even if only to save money on room and board. How realistic is it for me to assume that I could find temporary work teaching Englis ...

In Country Flights

Posted by mandanickel on 26/7/2013 at 14:39

I keep seeing posts from travelers talking about how cheap in country flights are in SEA, yet every route I have researched has been expensive (meaning hundreds of dollars compared to the $35-50 I have read about). Can someone explain to me why this might be? Or point me in the right direction? I have checked local airlines too. Thanks in advance. ...

changing korean won to US dollars before I travel

Posted by ratyoke on 19/7/2013 at 01:21

I'm an American and have done most of my traveling starting from the US carrying US dollars. For the past few years I have been teaching English in South Korea, and in my first year here during my first solo trip I had the unpleasant experience of finding out that my Korean won are not all that desirable in some places. Changing won to baht was not a problem in Thailand, but when I needed to change money in Laos I had trouble finding a money exchanger who would take my won. I know now that I ...

Cost of 7 weeks in SEA. Singapore, Malaysia and Indonesia

Posted by joshuacorn on 24/6/2010 at 12:27

I am currently in the very early stages of planning a trip to SEA with my partner. We plan to fly to singapore and spend maybe a week and then 3 weeks in malaysia (including Sarawak and Sabah)and about 3 weeks in indonesia (Mainly Java but possibly Sumatra and Sulawesi). Would like any advice on how much this would cost (on a per day basis). Would $10000 NZD cover this excluding the initial flight to singapore? (as of now $10000NZD = $70000 USD, or 5700 EUR. We would be doing it on the budget ...

Hi all First post-hope it's in the right place. I'm planning an adventure with my bf to SE Asia next year and have used this forum loads-so thanks to everyone for all the useful posts. So, I have been researching how to make a bit of money whilst travelling. A post which I found interesting was one which suggested hairdressers advertising their services in hostels/guesthouses. Does anyone have any experience of having done this? Was it popular? I am not a hairdresser, but I'm thinking about ...

Internet banking in SE Asia - who does?

Posted by Jleef on 8/1/2010 at 02:57

Interested to see who banks online in SEA versus who wouldn't dream of taking the risk. I'm thinking at the moment that when I travel it might be better to leave my banking details with a family member and use email to communicate with them about transfers and statements. It'd be a nuisance, and I'd probably still need to use my card now and then for things like internal flights, but I guess it would be safer than risking it in internet cafes. ...or am I being overly cautious? ...

6 countries, 4 weeks, 2000USD?

Posted by wardmj7 on 29/11/2012 at 03:15

Hey all, I will be traveling to South East Asia for my winter vacation in January. At the moment I plan on flying into Singapore and traveling to Malaysia, Thailand, Laos, Cambodia and Vietnam and flying out of Ho Chi Minh City. I realize it'll be quite intense but I'm moving back to the US next fall so I want to get a feel for the countries so I can determine which ones I want to visit for a lengthier amount of time in the (most likely distant) future. I have $2000 USD for this trip. This doe ...

Posted by gocartmozart on 21/2/2013 at 19:28

I'm trying to figure out the best way to go with finances for our trip. Some helpful advice would be much appreciated. We're going for 3 weeks in Thailand. Bangkok first then to Chiang Mai (visit Dad) then Phuket down to some Islands then back up to Bangkok to go home. We don't have a regular visa card, so, we were thinking of getting two seperate prepaid visas for around $300 CAN each then use those to book online. But then pay for hotels in baht whenever we are near banks where we can withd ...

I'm saving for my trip!

Posted by ColetteG on 13/11/2012 at 22:26

Hi everyone, I just wanted to get some ideas about how other people are saving for their upcoming trips. I've read lots of tips and advice, from cutting out coffee breaks and unsubscribing from magazine subscriptions (saving $200 per month atm) to getting rid of my TV (sold for $500 and saving $120 per month) and biking everywhere (free!). It was a bit harder to find a second job that fit in with my schedule but I've recently started hosting fun experiences for other travelers in my town and I' ...

Emergency stash of money

Posted by bd7391 on 13/12/2012 at 12:38

So I've read the very helpful posts that have been made about managing money, using plastic, carrying emergency cash etc abroad and wondered if a few could give their idea of emergency money. I have arranged for two separate debit cards, one with the bulk of my money in and the other with a smaller amount in case I lose the former card, that's one measure. I am going to use ATMs instead of travellers cheques on the whole, but should I take a couple of hundred dollars of travellers cheques for ...
