Silk Liners

Posted by UsTwo on 11/9/2011 at 09:36

I've seen a few threads where silk liners are discussed, with opinions for and against. What I'd like to know is what protection they give over bed bugs. Are the bugs repelled by the silk? Or is it simply a physical barrier? Thanks ...

Teaching in South East Asia

Posted by samsie23 on 1/11/2010 at 04:14

Hi all, I'm thinking of teaching English as a foreign language. First draw back is that I don't have a degree. I know i can teach in Indonesia with just a certificate, but wondered how difficult it was to work in Thailand, South Korea or Japan without one. I've heard its possible, but would like to hear from people with pratical experience advice in advance. Also which is the best course to take? Massive kind regards, Peter ...

Where is the outrage?

Posted by MADMAC on 18/7/2011 at 23:31

These men are executed in cold blood, a video of it is taken, and not a peep. A nutbag in Florida burns a Qur'an, and every Muslim in Afghanistan has his panties in a twist. What is wrong with the thought processes going on here? Imagine if the Australian Army had captured 16 Taliban militants, then simply lined them up on a hill top, and video taped their execution (complete with a troooper walking down the line and popping each one in the head just to be sure). There would be a hue and cry fro ...

The insurgency in southern Thailand

Posted by sayadian on 24/7/2011 at 14:46

I spent a great deal of time in the south, in fact I was down there 6 months before I even made it to Bangkok.I can recall this area has been a trouble spot for many years and the CT (communists) even shot up a Malaysian tour bus heading for Betong as long ago as 1985.Now we have the pro-Islamic terrorist threat. Again I can recall the Tahan Pran operating in that area during the mid 80's.and I remember a certain section of road where a soldier was put on our bus as protection (though he was m ...

karaoke on the bus

Posted by sayadian on 16/7/2011 at 20:14

I feel like apologising sometimes for the impression of Cambodian music most travellers get when their only exposure is to the nauseating karaoke they play on buses in Cambodia.I started this thread after Madmac mentioned the Cambodian-American fusion band Dengue fever whose lead singer Chhom Nimol has a hauntingly beautiful voice reminiscent of the unique Cambodian 60's style when young singers were inspired by listening to American forces broadcasting rock and pop music in Vietnam. The exubera ...

Sorry! All the other internet forums are rubbish! I don't suppose anyone has USA advice?

Posted by rledez1990 on 16/5/2011 at 01:18

I apologise in advance for asking a USA related question on a SE Asia forum- I love Travelfish and check it every day, and just haven't been able to find a good, friendly alternative for USA travel. Basically I just wondered if anyone on here had travelled around the USA/lives in the USA, and if anyone could give me budget ideas for my trip in Summer 2012 (after my Thailand trip this year!). I'll be travelling with my boyfriend on the student summer work/travel program from the beginning of Jun ...

Is this the end? A shortage of coconut milk....

Posted by busylizzy on 12/6/2011 at 10:21

OK, as a die-hard fan of eating and cooking Thai curries, I was saddened to read the news today: NZ faces drought in coconut milk A global shortage of coconut milk is expected to be felt here over the next two years. But one of the biggest importers....doesn't expect it to be as bad as in the UK where supermarkets have been running out and some restaurants have been forced to change their menus. Manassen Foods Australia development manager ...said the impact could already be seen in New Zealan ...

Travelling on barges

Posted by KazAussie on 28/5/2011 at 20:13

Hi, this is not at all to do with Asia but more about travelling around northern Australia. A few years ago I met up with some people on Thursday Island who had travelled from Cairns on a supply barge. Aparently these trips were great so long as you weren't fixed into a strict schedule. They said that there were trips available right across the north of Australian and down the West Australian coast. Does anyone have any more information on these. I have searched the internet but can't find out a ...

Too many shoes.

Posted by humpdawg on 6/11/2010 at 19:11

Hi all. After a long wait I'm finally off to SE Asia on tuesday with my girlfriend. We're going for about 6 months. I've been before myself a few times but this will be her first time. So here's my predicament - She wants to bring a pair of flip-flops, a pair of converse and 3 pairs of sandals so she'll have something to go with whatever she wearing when we go out at night. She's not stupid, just a bit naive. I've told her this is ridiculous but she's not having it.I need help convincing her. ...

I'll never come here again...

Posted by travellingsarah on 7/7/2010 at 10:57

As I stood in the pouring rain waiting for a bus in a remote town in NW Vietnam I thought to myself - I am never going to come here again. This view may have been primarily driven by the weather and boredom, rather than the location, but it made me interested in where other people had visited and vowed never to go again - for whatever reason. Any opinions welcome! ...
