Tour Guide

Posted by Spinnekop on 25/10/2009 at 13:31

Hi all, does anyone know what a private tour guide will cost daily in the larger cities of Cambodia, Vietnam and Thailand e.g. (only an average guess needed in $) any decent English speaking guide that wont take you to jewelry shops I'm not fussed about the transport even hanging onto the back of a motorbike would work, would even be preferable ! Just like to have a idea what the average cost would be, last time I was in Thailand I did everything solo and was mostly lost trying to figur ...

To Stuart (Somtam2000), the TF crew and fellow forumites, I'm having a feel-good moment, so thought I'd share the love! Just wanted to say thanks so much for providing an awesome website and resource for all of us travellers, wanna-be travellers and arm-chair travellers. For me personally, when planning a trip, the information that I can find here is invaluable – from the initial planning stages of a trip through to the point where I am standing on a street with my A5 printed TF guide and ...

Hey everyone, First post here so crossing my fingers on replys. I am looking at flying into Bangkok from Toronto, Ontario, Canada where I am from in February 2011. Or if need be I will drive to Buffalo, NY for a cheaper flight. I am looking to travel for 6 months plus but don't really know my return date at all. I am struggling with finding a company over here that offers open ended tickets or possibly one that will allow a free or cheap change of my return flight date. Any information would ...

Going to Nepal through India, has anyone?

Posted by Mexicano31 on 10/6/2010 at 04:11

Hello all, Im travelling through SEA for some 6 months starting this July and I am thinking about doing a "in the middle" trip to Nepal and India around october. I see flights are cheap from KUL to New Delhi on Air Asia and then there are not too bad prices from New Delhi to Kathmandu. Im thinking 2 weeks in India to get a glimpse of the country and then 2 o 3 in Nepal to see some amazing landscapes and monasteries. Im really excited about this two countries since I am a photographer ...

Pet hate: Hotels that charge in dollars

Posted by somtam2000 on 2/11/2010 at 07:00

What is it with hotels and guesthouses that, just because they're in Indonesia (or anywhere else for that matter) they don't feel to be under any obligation to list their rates in rupiah? Same goes for other countries. The old justification they tend to wheel out is that most of their expenses are in EU or USD, but I'm sure the local staff aren't paid in greenbacks! It's annoying, and just gives the properties another way to milk money out of travellers by using some exchange rate pegged to the ...

Made the wife proud today

Posted by neosho on 9/10/2010 at 10:49

With the end of the rainy season coming, everyone in the village is shooting firecrackers. Being in the festive mood, I bought some. Well, I threw what I thought was a small one on to our porch roof in an attempt to scare the wife. I now have a 4 inch diameter hole in the roof. Needless to say she failed to see the humor. I'm leaving now to go find the local carpenters. ...

Favourite hated towns

Posted by 5acrefarmer on 21/9/2010 at 17:05

Anyone got a town they sort of hate but sort of love? I remember ages ago when I first arrived in (then) Calcutta, I hated it but ended up being stuck there for several days and grew to like it. Often the best travel stories to tell are the ones involving pain and misery and awful awful places! ...

getting clothes made

Posted by savorygal on 2/10/2010 at 22:26

I would like to have some clothes made while in Thailand, just simple everyday sorts of things. I want the fabric to be 100% cotton or linen. I have been reading guidebooks and the consensus seems to be unless you want silk or suiting material the fabric choices are limited & mostly synthetics. Is that true?! Any info would be appreciated. ...

Hi I've never seen the term/word 'flashpackers' before, wondering what its exact meaning is. (I have a feeling I don't want to be one!) I've notice it used as a term to possibly describe a form of traveller/tourist/backpacker but also maybe a chain of hostels or hotels throughout SEA. Interesting AND insulting? ...

Hiroshima Anniversary

Posted by somtam2000 on 7/8/2010 at 20:43

As many will have noted, Friday gone was the 65th anniversary of the Hiroshima bombing and on that theme I was passed the following site that puts together all the nuclear explosions on the planet, commencing with the single test before the two in Japan. It runs for about ten minutes and is worth watching through from start to finish. A lot huh - 2,053 all up! Yeah, I know, nothing to do with travel -- that's why we have idle banter. ...

vacation jewelry

Posted by tibetanempress on 28/7/2010 at 20:39

Whenever I go on vacation my favorite thing to take home, except for the photos, is jewelry. On my trip to shanghai I brought back stunning Chinese cloisonné earrings. In Hong Kong I bought red lacquer earrings. In Tibet found mala beads, the famous dzi beads and huge beautiful turquoise rings. In Thailand and Indonesia I found some amazing coconut bangles and necklaces. What is your favorite piece of jewelry you have bought on holiday? ...

Last week or so I posted something about how the mind only wants peace and quiet. I finished reading the book ‘eat pray love’. Wasn’t my favourite but, it still got me thinking about the idea of peace. Peace with-in. Are you at peace? I mean with yourself mostly…. Where and when do you find yourself the most centered? Around family, friends, working, reading, doing activities or hobbies? ...
