vacation jewelry

Posted by tibetanempress on 28/7/2010 at 20:39

Whenever I go on vacation my favorite thing to take home, except for the photos, is jewelry. On my trip to shanghai I brought back stunning Chinese cloisonné earrings. In Hong Kong I bought red lacquer earrings. In Tibet found mala beads, the famous dzi beads and huge beautiful turquoise rings. In Thailand and Indonesia I found some amazing coconut bangles and necklaces. What is your favorite piece of jewelry you have bought on holiday? ...

peace

Posted by tibetanempress on 20/7/2010 at 14:33

Last week or so I posted something about how the mind only wants peace and quiet. I finished reading the book ‘eat pray love’. Wasn’t my favourite but, it still got me thinking about the idea of peace. Peace with-in. Are you at peace? I mean with yourself mostly…. Where and when do you find yourself the most centered? Around family, friends, working, reading, doing activities or hobbies? ...

Shared bathrooms?

Posted by luce_uk on 9/4/2010 at 16:18

Hi I leave in a few weeks for a RTW year trip all around SEA and Aus. What i was wondering is what are the shared bathrooms like in the hostels/guesthouses? Are they generally kept clean, and how many showers per people do they have e.g do you often have to wait to get showered? Any horrible experience with grotty places? And where do people dry their towels and stuff? Thanks for your replies! ...

When not to go

Posted by Remedy on 9/5/2010 at 21:55

Hi all, I spent the last 5 weeks of last year traveling through Vietnam and Cambodia, and it has left me with a desire to travel back and see all the things I missed the first time around (another SE Asia fanatic born :). Now while I truly loved the area (and the people), I was sometimes annoyed with the hordes of tourists and tour groups in certain areas. I am therefore thinking of taking the next trip outside of high season to hopefully get a better insight into everyday life. It is n ...

Laundry in SE Asia

Posted by Mexicano31 on 11/7/2010 at 03:04

Hello everyone, Just wondering how do travellers do their laundry in SEA. I heard about an interesing idea which was to use a big strong bag (like the kind called dry bags) and shove the clothes, water and soap... then shake for a while and after that just rinse with water. That would be like a human washing machine haha. Anyway, how do people do theirs now? are there laundries all over(thailand, vietnam, laos, cambodia, indonesia, malaysia)? do everyone wash clothes manually? cheers. ...

Where Should I go?

Posted by dootson on 8/7/2010 at 17:55

Hello all, I need some advice! I want to go away on hols from about the 20th Dec - 5th Jan this year...... But I don't know where to go!! - Last May I went to Koh Samui - Had a great time - loved the awesome (4* hotel), loved the bars and massages on the beach in the early evening... loved the relaxed vibe, not too busy. - Then at xmas I went to Phuket, Patong - again, awesome top end hotel, average beach, but no real beach presence at night and no beach massages.... however, great access to ...

Looking to do my first few-month south-east Asia tour -- need reassurance!

Posted by mrseb on 22/6/2010 at 06:40

I didn't know where else to make this topic -- but idle banter seems as good as any I'm looking to do a 3 or 4 month trip to south-east Asia this coming winter -- October to January, I think. I want to hit 4 or 5 countries properly, with some short stop-offs along the way. First, am I right in thinking that that's an ideal time to go? All of the countries seem to have slightly different rainy seasons, but October->January seems to be the best bet. Second, I want to do Indonesia and the Ph ...

What would you do next?

Posted by caseyprich on 13/6/2010 at 09:10

Each year I get a 3 week holiday at the end of January/start of February (Chinese New Year) and I've used it to do small loops in areas of Southeast Asia. One example would be a Northern Laos loop Luang Prabang-Phonsovan-Sam Neau-Nong Kiaow. So - I don't mind taking a tight circuit, though I'm not apposed to hopping around - like a week in Chiang Mai and 2 weeks on the Islands. Not laying out what I have done - I'm wondering what any of you would do if you had another 3 weeks and could choo ...

What's your favorite Public Holiday in Asia?

Posted by exacto on 13/7/2009 at 01:30

Mine has always been Loy Kratong. It's a celebration that takes place around the full moon usually in November. I love watching the decorated floats on the water or the lanterns as they sail skyward. This holiday always seems to capture the graceful side of the culture, and the more remote a place I've been to celebrate the better it has been. Plus, it isn't included on the dry day list that SBE provided for no alcohol sales. Bonus! What's your favorite? ...

Giving money when taking pictures of the locals?

Posted by DLuek on 22/1/2010 at 09:50

Personally I think it's rude - anywhere in the world - to walk up to someone and snap their picture without their permission. Yet I see tourists do this all the time in SE Asia as though they are at the zoo taking pictures of the lions! Before I point my camera and shoot I try to "test the waters" by showing the person my camera and seeing their response. If they don't mind I always give a little money afterwards, though sometimes they don't wish to accept. I was wondering how others feel on ...

Double pricing

Posted by somtam2000 on 24/3/2008 at 19:48

You arrive at the national park / bus or train station or other attraction and are greeted by a sign reading: Locals: 100B Foreigners: 200B How does that make you feel? Do you think it's fair that foreigners are forced to pay more than locals at certain attractions? To your mind should there be exceptions (eg Angkor Wat, Khmers don't pay at all). Or do you think that all people should pay the same -- regardless of their ability to pay? Is it perhaps a way to redistribute wealth by m ...
