Can I travel Thailand, Burma and India on €1000 per month?

Posted by roro1990 on 8/2/2015 at 17:39

Hi, So I recently finished a job I hated and built up some savings from it. I was convinced for a long time I wanted to go to australia on a year long working holiday visa but am now having major second thoughts and thinking that 3 months of travelling might be a better thing to do. Plus by my estimation it'd make less of a dent in my savings than going to Oz and being without a job for 1 or 2 months. Anyway, my question is firstly does this sound like a good idea, travelling for 3 months inst ...

Hi all, Finding the task of making an itinerary a bit daunting. I am planning on travelling SE Asia in November, and intend on staying out there for 4 months potentially more depending on money. I wish to visit the following countries : Thailand, Cambodia, Vietnam and Indonesia. Although there is a lot of information on here, I'm finding the finer details harder to come by, and the logistics of which is the best route to approach my plans. Any advice on route and transport between my destina ...

On drones: The medium of people power

Posted by somtam2000 on 31/8/2015 at 07:45

I've seen some fabulous drone travel photography, but this really interesting piece in the context of the Bersih 4 rallies in Malaysia, discusses how nascent drone photography is taking the "medium is the message" maxim to a whole new level. (Image New Mandala/The Star) Previously, when the creation of photos like those in the story remained primarily in the domain of professional photographers and/or authorities, now anyone with a drone can create staggering images that often far b ...

Hi Guys! This is my first time actually posting on the forums, I've been researching this trip for a while, and I've found reading through the posts here quite helpful, but I was hoping for some help on my itinerary? I'm travelling solo around Southeast Asia from the 15th August to 20th September (In and out of Bangkok), it's my first time in the part of the world, and one of my first times travelling alone (I did a short month long interrail last summer, so this is going to be very different to ...

Hi everyone First post here so I hope I've done everything correctly..! My boyfriend and I are planning to go traveling for a year from October 2016. We're in the early stages of planning and have been thinking of spending the year in India, Sri Lanka and South East Asia, mainly for the following reasons: - We love Asia but have mostly only been able to take 3 week trips there, so want some time to properly explore. - We take the slow and steady approach to traveling. We prefer to stay in places ...

Hi all, I will be travelling to Asia in the last two weeks of October. The first week I will be in Hong Kong for the wedding of a good friend. The second week (six days including travel time actually) I have decided to travel solo in the region. I have narrowed down my choices of destination to either, Kota Kinabatuin Sabah, Malaysia, or to Cebu in the Visayas, Philippines. I'm having a hardtime deciding where to go. I backpacked around South East Asia for three months 5 years ago so many desti ...

Hello Everyone, I posted in the Thailand forum but this may be a better place. Due to unexpected circumstances, I will have two weeks of travel starting on August 16th. As you can imagine, I am excited but nervous (hence me posting at 3AM) and have been browsing the forum to figure out what I can do in this time. I will be flying in and out of BKK from LAX. I have traveled quite a bit and enjoy fast paced travel - so for something this incredibly short I would like to make the most of it and hop ...

itinerary feedback needed-Burma, Indonesia, Laos, Thailand, Cambodia (and more!)

Posted by fernwood on 5/9/2013 at 23:37

We're planning a 6 month trip around South East Asia/Asia(our first long trip, and first time in Asia!), starting in February 2014.We're in our 50's, fairly active-we like the outdoors, and we're comfortablewithout all the comforts of home (e.g. we like kayak camping). We're guessingwe'll spend ~$50/day each (give or take). We'd like to see enough to have somesense of what a country's about, and see some of the major"must-sees"-but we'd rather spend a few days hanging out in some town ...

First SE Asia trip (12 weeks) and trying not to cram too much

Posted by hollon on 30/7/2015 at 22:07

I'm planning my first trip to SE Asia that will start in mid/late Sept. to mid Dec. Though I've never been to SE Asia, I've been living in Korea for a year so my mind is accustomed to not being in America. I guess I want to lay out what I've got planned and see what advice you guys have for me. I would like to visit: Thailand, Cambodia, Laos, Vietnam, and Indonesia (will be flying into and probably out of Thailand). Budget is around $6000 for two people. I really enjoy hiking, swimming, campin ...

Hi Everyone, Apologies if you have answered these questions a million times before, but I have hit panic stage and need to book flights next week! As some background info, I am a (currently terrified) first time female traveller, having never even walked into a pub on my own before, and am planning a 13-14 week trip to try to catch up on some of the life I have missed out on over the past 20 years (typical mid life crisis lol!). Hi there, Me and my 3 friends are travelling to Thailand and Vietnam for the first time next year. Due to meeting up around weddings and other trips we were restricted with the dates we could travel and have therefore already booked our flights to land in Bangkok (BKK) at 09.25 on the 21st Feb 2016. Now I have just found out that the day we land is the first full moon of the year and that there will be the Lantern Festival happening in Hoi An and I would love for us to experience this! Howe ...

How do Americans die while travelling?

Posted by somtam2000 on 27/7/2015 at 19:16

If you've ever wondered how many travellers from the US die overseas and how they met their end, here is the authoritative source. Via the US State Dept, here is a wrap on overseas US deaths from October 2002 to December 2014, searchable by period and country. I assume it is based on consular reports, so probably not 100% accurate, especially re dual nationalities and those who were injured/got ill, but died back home. Drugs, drowning, suicide and, most of all, road accidents (they're broken o ...

From this week's Travelfish newsletter (being sent out shortly anyway! Over the weekend The Guardian had a piece talking about tourist hot spots around the world and wondered if all these millions of "new travellers" are really welcome in these destinations. We've seen much written on this topic related to Southeast Asia, especially on the huge increase in tourists from mainland China. People worry about destinations that are considered (rightly or wrongly) as fragile: Angkor Wat ...

Planning a trip to SEA/weather questions

Posted by halthedean on 19/7/2015 at 12:36

Hello all. I've done tons of research for an upcoming trip to SEA in 2016. I've already gone through the weather sections of travelfish, and get the feeling that I should reschedule my trip. I was planning on going from Apr 17-May25. On a few other websites I've found about the weather in the region, some say, "go it won't be that bad yet for rain", while others say, "hell no, too hot, too rainy." Right now I'll be spending the majority of my time in Vietnam, with only h ...
