travel health

Posted by broy on 18/10/2015 at 10:21

My wife and I traveled Southeast Asia quite a bit in the 70s and 80s. Since then my wife had her spleen removed and as a result has to deal with a compromised immune system. Malaria is a particular risk. We thought about traveling to Malaysia in January/February but recently read that the incidence of dengue has doubled in the past year. Not deadly but certainly not a lot of fun. I realize that there is no such thing as "risk free" in the tropics but wanted to get travelers opinions of ...

Expats dying in Southeast Asia

Posted by somtam2000 on 25/10/2015 at 22:11

Khmer440 has a solid piece on expats dying in Southeast Asia which is well worth a read. It certainly rings true to me and very little to argue with in it. "One day I was sat next to a South African nurse on a bus to Battambang. We spoke about the curtailed longevity of many expats living in Southeast Asia. As we headed across the sunbaked plains of north western Cambodia, I think we concluded that expats make a decision subconsciously or otherwise, to trade the lifestyle here for a shorte ...

Not booking return flights for 4/5 month travels

Posted by jimbojh on 14/11/2015 at 06:00

Hi, I will be travelling to SE Asia from UK in June, but am undecided how long I want to go for as yet. I will be returning between October and November but the question is does anybody have any experience booking the return long haul flights whilst over in south east Asia. This would give me ultimate flexibility and also mean that I don't have to dish out as much now for both legs of the journey. Any suggestions... ...

Indonesia needs Jawas

Posted by somtam2000 on 10/11/2015 at 19:01

From this week's newsletter: I was watching Star Wars (the original) the other night with the kids and they got asking after the Jawas - who were they, where were they from, and what did they do for a job. I settled on "scrap collectors" as a catchall for their occupation and our high year-old daughter asked, "So if they're the recyclers, does that mean everyone else are dumpers, like in Bali?" According to numerous media reports through 2015, Indonesia is the second bigges ...

Can someone help trouble-shoot my itinerary? (Vietnam, Cambodia, Laos, Myanmar)

Posted by FernR on 1/11/2015 at 05:10

Hi all, I'm wondering if someone could quickly trouble-shoot my itinerary; I'm just about to start buying tickets, and would be extremely grateful if someone could just eyeball my itinerary and make sure we're not doing something stupid. I've got: Dec 23: Fly into Ho Chi Minh City (Overland thru Mekong Delta to Pnom Penh. Boat to Siem Reap .) Dec 31: Fly Siem Reap to Vientiane (on Lao Air?) Jan 3: Fly Vientiane to Luang Prabang (Lao Air?) Jan 5: Fly Luang Prabang to Hanoi (Lao Air?) Ja ...

Experiential things (cooking, art workshops, etc) in Vietnam, Cambodia, Laos, Burma

Posted by FernR on 3/11/2015 at 08:31

Hi all, Our family (two parents, 22-year-old, 19-year-old, 15-year-old) are very big on 'hands-on experiences' while traveling; when we backpacked through Africa/Asia 20+ years ago, some of our best things were doing a batik workshop in JoJakarta, doing a cooking class, etc. So, in * Phnom Penh * Siem Reap * Luang Prabang * Hanoi * Burma (Yangon, Bagan, Mandalay, Inle Lake) Are there any particularly phenomenal experiential things (that preferably aren't prohibitively expensive)? Best tips f ...

Two Months: Vietnam, Laos, Myanmar, ?

Posted by Dayyanum on 1/11/2015 at 20:48

Hello all, (Cliff Notes At Bottom) I'm planning a trip back to Southeast Asia from December 29th through the first week of March (just over 60 days). I've already been to Cambodia and Thailand, and while I would love to go back, my main focus is on countries I've never visited. Vietnam is my biggest focus, and while I know it's a cliche, I'm definitely going to tour the country by motorcycle (I ride quite a bit, and rode the Mae Hong Son Loop in Thailand). My plan is the classic 'South t ...

Trouble when buying single flight tickets in between countries?

Posted by blaaat on 28/10/2015 at 18:42

Hello! I plan to go to southeast asia at the end of november - beginning of december. My intercontinental flight from Europe lands in Singapore, and my trip homewards also leaves from Singapore . In the meantime, I plan to visit Cambodia (7 days) and Phuket , Thailand (3 days). I've researched cheap flights and came up with the following, affordable and not overly time-consuming, scheme: 1. Singapore - Phnom Penh (Jetstar) 2. Phnom Penh - Phuket with layover in Bankok (Bankok Airways) 3 ...

Help with Myanmar itinerary!

Posted by Mellowyellow on 9/10/2015 at 09:05

Hello all! Im currently in Railey near Krabi in Thailand and planning on going to Myanmar in a couple days via Ranong. Can anyone let me know where I can head from there? Im not too interested in beaches and would like to head up towards Yangon or elsewhere around. Also if anyone can suggest where I can visit a bit "off the beaten path" I'll have about 3 weeks in the country. Thanks in advance! Melissa ...

Four wheels good, two wheels bad?

Posted by somtam2000 on 19/10/2015 at 23:33

From this week's newsletter, A few years ago I was in Phuket enjoying a couple of cold drinks at a sunset viewpoint with my friend Jamie Monk. Jamie runs an excellent website to Phuket and over a Chang Beer or three we chatted about Phuket and what people like doing there. One thing he mentioned was that he had seen a lot of interest from his readers in hiring a car for their stay in Phuket. Phuket has a very broken and corrupt transport system and so it is generally a good idea to sort out ...

Hello, I am planning a 3.5 week trip to South East Asia in the middle of May-mid June for my siblings and I, and am in need of advice. Here's what I have so far: 1st day and night in Bangkok 5 days in Koa Tao or Samui 4 days in Chiang Mai area 7 days in Bali 3 final days in Bangkok (I have set aside a travel day in between each destination) I've been struggling on deciding between Bali and ...

Japanese encephalitis dilema

Posted by sunlvr on 10/9/2015 at 09:42

Trying not to be a hypochondriac after meeting with the travel doctor! My question is.... my doc does not recommend the Japanese encephalitis vaccine, but my travel companions doctors do. So, 2 out 3 recommend it. Whats your opinion on this matter?? We will be traveling the well traveled path of Phnom Penh to Siem Reap, fly to Luang Prabang bus to Vientianne, train to Bangkok. This will be from mid October to mid November. Not a lot of rural areas except that which we can reach with bicycles ...

Malaysia and Thailand in October

Posted by suekwd on 28/9/2015 at 17:31

Please can anyone advise the best places to visit in Malaysia or Thailand during the month of October. I particularly love quiet beaches and snorkeling but fear this is not the best time of year for that, on either the East or West coast?? I am flying into Kuala Lumpur from UK on 1st October, flying back on 30th. Would I be advised to go on somewhere else where weather conditions might be better? Any recommendations welcome. Thankyou! Forest fires in Indonesia

Posted by tintifax on 29/9/2015 at 04:52

Hi, I'm going to travel to Southeast Asia in October, starting with Malaysia and Indonesia (at least that's the plan). Now I've heard that the forest fires in Indonesia (Borneo and Sumatra) are still ongoing, also affecting Malaysia and Singapore. Does anyone of you have any further information about that (which regions are affected, etc)? I'm thinking of changing the route because I want to avoid spending too much time in regions that are full of smoke... ...

Thailand/Myanmar itinerary help please

Posted by AFClatouche on 24/9/2015 at 07:37

Hi there, I'm planning to travel (first time, solo) to South East Asia in mid to late October. My initial plan was to fly in to Bangkok then travel north and follow a typical banana pancake trail - eg, Laos, Vietnam north to south, Cambodia, back into Thailand for Ko Chang and Krabi, than Malaysia... However.... After reading up, I have a huge desire to visit Myanmar too, particularly Yangon and the Southern beaches around Dawei. What would be your expert advice for factoring in Myanmar wit ...

Incheon airport layover

Posted by sunlvr on 9/9/2015 at 18:37

Looking for advise from those that have traveled thru Incheon, South Korea. We have a bit of a layover on our S.E. Asia adventure and I'm wondering if anyone has done the self guided tour on the Maglev train? A brochure I found says it leaves from the airport> St.Yongyu>raw fish center> Jamjin Island> airport. I'm curious how much time we would need to do this little side trip? Thanks! ...
