Hello! We are two Swedish backpackers in Vietnam, at the moment we are in Nha Trang . We are thinking about taking an easyrider tour on 3 days; Nha Trang to Dalat. After some reasearch we have spoken with a company that could give us this tour ( After some more research on this company our problem is that we don't know if we can trust these guys. Alot of people seem to have been scammed ( the tour-guide couldn't speak english, no refund on interrupted tours and a ...

So what is up with hotels?

Posted by somtam2000 on 18/5/2015 at 15:19

From this week's newsletter: "So I'm just back from an eight-week stretch in Singapore, during which I stayed at more than 20 different hotels and hostels. It's always interesting staying at a place that you've previously only done an inspection of, as you're better able to identify problems like hot water that takes 10 minutes to arrive, crummy WiFi, permeable walls or breakfasts that are best avoided. But the most jarring part of the stays, and this was almost across the board, was the c ...

Posted by seaniegraham on 15/5/2015 at 09:47

Hi all! I am planning on spending NYE 15/16 in Bangkok, Thailand then getting a coach to Pattaya on the 1st/2nd Jan 2016 to avoid the busy city escape. Once in Pattaya I am planning on buying a cheap motorbike or moped (sell at the end of the trip) to make my way on a 3-4 week journey through Cambodia (coastal road to Phnom Penh, then North to Siem Reap) then South to Ho Chi Minh, Vietnam. I will then fly to Hanoi for a day or two before flying back to the UK. I am doing the trip on a budget, ...

Our planned trip for Oct-Dec this year, please do comment

Posted by mikal83 on 4/5/2015 at 05:51

2 years ago, this mid 50's flashpacking/backpacking duo travelled from England to Oz, with 6 weeks in Thailand/Malaysia. Route was obvious..BKK to Chiang M and back, then down to a few islands, into Malaysia and out from Singers. Trains/buses and hotels mostly prebooked with Agoda/Asia rooms. It went mostly to plan and the weather/people/experiences were top notch and fun. This year its a biggy, the route as per the BIG SEA route here on T'fish, (a website we love along with Seat 61). The route. ...

Hey Travelfish. I am in 2 weeks going on my first solo backpacker trip to Southeast Asia. I will be there for 7 weeks and there is too much i want to see. I have made a route, where i will visit all my must-sees. The only problem is, it might be too much, and i might have too little time per destination to really experience it. So here is my plan: Bangkok (my uncle lives there) - Siem Reap - Hoi An - Cat Ba Island - Hanoi - Sa Pa - Luang Prabang - Bangkok ( quick visit for Myanmar ...

Being too guarded while travelling

Posted by somtam2000 on 27/4/2015 at 03:08

From this week's newsletter: Some years ago on a bus in Cambodia, I sat next to a backpacker who spent most of the ride complaining about all of the locals who had tried to scam him. He had locked metal coils resembling razor wire around his pack. He seemed to think that all of the locals were out to rob him. Clearly, he wasn't having much fun. Especially in popular destinations, there's no doubt that some locals try to take advantage of travellers. The unscrupulous scammers, relentless touts, ...

Hi all, I just turned 28 and I am on the verge of putting my two week notice in with my job and traveling Southeast Asia for a couple months (or longer). I have ZERO ties and I want to do this while I still can. I am planning on buying a one way ticket to either Bangkok or Ho Chi Minh City and making a U around the area trying to hit up as many cool spots as I can. This is going to happen around the second week of March. I can comfortably spend about $8000 on this whole journey. I may be trav ...

Help finding a group to travel with!

Posted by lewisjordan on 17/4/2015 at 22:14

A friend and I are planning on traveling to SE Asia for 3-4 weeks after college graduation but we are overwhelmed/worried about going by ourselves. Does anyone know of a good resource to find groups of people interested in traveling to SE Asia, preferably college students? Are there cheap tours that are a bit more rustic and less "pampered"? We're looking to really explore some countries and even backpack a bit. Thanks for any help! ...

hey guys So been thinking about this for a while and just turned 30 so decided to take the plunge and spend 2-3 months or maybe more travelling through Thailand Cambodia and Vietnam. I will be flying into Bangkok and then will be spontaneous and see which directions my travels will take me. Not into the party scene as much as I used to. So using this time as a chill out and relaxing travel. My rough itinerary is from Bangkok to travel north through Thailand, then down towards Cambodia and Siem ...

4-5 Weeks SE Asia In August (Cambodia, Thailand & Myanmar)

Posted by alexaw52 on 14/4/2015 at 15:24

My 13 year old son and I will be traveling to SE Asia in August. The itinerary isn't even an itinerary yet. In very beginning stages of planning. I'm trying to see as much as we can without over-exhausting ourselves. Thought if we flew into Cambodia, then traveled to Thailand and up to Myanmar -- and fly home from there it would allow us to see all 3 locations. If we fly in and out of Bangkok -- I think it would probably be possible to only do 2 of the countries. A few questions -- I know we w ...

Transiting through Penang to get to Koh Samui question

Posted by markacino on 13/4/2015 at 23:52

Hey all.. first off, apologies if this has an answer somewhere, but I could not find it. So I am planning on flying AirAsia to Penang transiting in KL as is required. I then plan to jump on a Firefly flight straight to Koh Samui. I also realise there is probably better ways to make it to Koh Samui, but this seems to be the best balance of time and affordability. Usually I have more time overseas and just bus/ferry it into Samui, or wherever I happen to be headed. Now I know that when I land ...

Advice for our new Visa breakdown and scams website

Posted by clemworldwide on 8/4/2015 at 05:50

Hi all, as a group we have been living and travelling around SE Asia for four years now and have started a website (soon to become a full wiki) to help other travelers when they first come here before they know about the horror of crossing some borders, or just what to bring when you go to pick up your visa. I was hoping there would be some advice for us before we fully launch the site. The site is - it basically breaks down the tourist visas on arrival and in advance, with a ...

Hello there, My fiance and I will be heading to SEA for an extended honeymoon this summer (yay!). It will be our first time in SEA, and we are planning a 10-week tour based off of the 5-6-week regional itinerary suggested by Travelfish here. We would really love any advice/thoughts on our planned route from experienced SEA travelers. We are flexible, so if we get delayed due to weather/transportation or fall in love with a place we visit, we are happy to rejigger our itinerary as we go. The on ...

Myself and my misses are heading off to Thailand, Laos, Vietnam and Cambodia in August (we understand this is the wet season). We have been travelling for just over two years non stop and are now hoping to do this on a budget of 7000AUD, is this possible for staying in private rooms in hostels for the most part? We would love to visit Hoi An, Halong Bay, The killing fields and the full moon in Koh Phangan. Also we were hoping to get the slowboat to LP and from Vietnam into Cambodia through the M ...
