When are discounted air fares released for Feb 2018?

Posted by PathMan on 6/2/2017 at 01:37

Hi Everyone, My wife and I are planning to take a trip to Vietnam and Cambodia (20 days or thereabouts), and have found an ideal private tour package with Tonkin Travel. I have been looking at flights from London Heathrow, flying into Hanoi (or or around the 18th Jan 2018) and returning at the end of the trip from Siem Reap to Heathrow (on or around the 7th Feb 2018, ahead of the Tet holidays). My problem is that many of the airlines are currently offering discounted fares for 2017 but none ...

Backpacking 6 months - Itinerary

Posted by kel on 6/2/2017 at 00:28

Ahoy fellow travellers. My partner and I are currently planning a 6ish month trip to South East Asia, from Jan 2017 anywhere up early September 2017. Planning the itinerary to make sure we avoid terrible weather is proving to be difficult as I really want to travel quite slowly but I don't want to stay in one place too long and miss all the good weather! I'm hoping someone with a litttttle more experience than I, might be able to give us a few tips! So far, I'm thinking; Arrive Bangkok - 1 w ...

Seeing red over fake reviews

Posted by somtam2000 on 24/8/2015 at 19:33

From this week's newsletter: "So you can't throw a satay stick without spearing some news story about fake reviews online, but what is this fake review thing you speak of? Here's a primer regarding Jo's Dormotel in a popular city near you. Please note, these examples are fictional. Fake Review Level 1 Joe joins Tripadvisor using his Josdormlodge.com email address and off the bat adds a review for his hotel saying it is awesome and that Jo is a really cool guy. Fake Review Level 2 TA will ...

Overtourism, what to do?

Posted by somtam2000 on 15/1/2017 at 23:55

From our first newsletter of 2017, being sent out in a few hours. Don't get it? Sign up here. "It is, quite simply, one of the most impressive and memorable sights in all of Kyoto." So read our Lonely Planet Japan guidebook. At the end of the listing, they added, "During the first few days in January, thousands of believers visit the shrine as their hatsu-mode (first shrine visit of the New Year) to pray for good fortune." "Perhaps the single most impressive sight in a ...

Advice welcome for 3 month itinerary

Posted by JCoco on 5/1/2017 at 02:32

Hey guys, I'm planning my first solo backpack trip to SE Asia between mid September and December this year. I'm trying to put up a traject through Thailand, Laos, Cambodia and Vietnam. I don't want a complete set up schedule but looking for something to fall back on so I don't have to look up everything while I'm there. I'd start with a few days in Bangkok before heading up north to possibly Ayutthaya and then stay 10-14 days in Chiang Mai to explore the region. From there to Laos and Lua ...

Hi there, This is my first post but I have read a lot of others, i have been through the itineraries, done a lot of other research and i speak to customers at work where possible too haha. I am getting mixed opinions of the weather in may so here is my dilemma. My work has approved me 3 months leave, I am leaving in march and return on the 6th of june. Ideally i would have liked to follow the general path from Bangkok through to Northern Thailand and so on and then ended up back at the beaches ...

Dear ageing backpacker...

A Vice wrap piece on some of the stereotypical backpackers you're likely to come across on the road... "Israelis are also a bit like this. Israelis treat travel a bit like an elaborate form of Tinder, whereby they travel the world looking for other Israelis. Then they find each other and gather in Israeli-themed restaurants where they spend weeks watching Family Guy and eating falafel and getting dangerously, terrifyingly stoned." and "In the history of the world, do you know h ...

Mapology: Our new map to Southeast Asia

Posted by somtam2000 on 16/12/2016 at 18:48

Hi everyone, Just as a bit of Silly Season fun, we've made a new map on the site which we're calling "Mapology". It lists everywhere where we cover in the region. You click on an icon and you get a pop-up with the place name, a photo and links to the Travelfish page for that destination (and to Agoda and Booking.com if available for that destination). We mark capitals, national parks and islands with different markers (this isn't 100% comprehensive, but we're working on it) and we'r ...

Hello everyone. I am arriving in bangkok on the 20th of october next year, and have set up a itenerary (rough) for my travel, as i am also flying out from bangkok on the 20th of december. So to start: i have two full months, i am a solo traveler, i generally enjoy less crowded, more scenic and remote places instead of big cities and crowds I am an active person, so i would like places where i can meet up with other people and do treks or motorbike loops for example. PS: i own a light motorcycle ...

Hangout in SE Asia?

Posted by alarcher on 14/12/2016 at 17:32

Just retired @ 60 so we have plenty of time but not heaps of cash. I'm looking for some suggestions for laid back destinations that are cheap so we can stay there between other "must do" destinations. I guess flash packer describes us but a comfortable bed, fan & ensuite suit us. Beach is good but we also like the moutains and rivers. We are Australian if that matters. Thanks in advance ...

Choo choos in Southeast Asia

Posted by somtam2000 on 15/11/2016 at 00:46

We featured this a few weeks ago in the Travelfish newsletter and have been meaning to post it here. So it seems James over at NomadicNotes has, it would be fair to say, an unhealthy interest in tube maps, train lines and SouthEast Asia. Rather than go into therapy he decided to throw all three obsessions into a single monster map of all Southeast Asia's train lines - past, present, future and not in our lifetime (hopefully). You can see a small version of the map below, but do head over to th ...

Visa Exemptions, and onward travel. Please help!

Posted by Brightmaw on 13/11/2016 at 14:53

Hey everyone! I've now gathered that proof on onward travel IS required when using the 15 day visa exemption to enter Vietnam, much like Vietnam and Myanmar. Regarding Vietnam in particular, does anyone know if this proof can be a bus booking, or has it got to be a flight booking? I found on the Thailand embassy website that any method of departure is fine, but there must be a booking. Only one site has suggested departure from Vietnam can be by any means. However, having emailed them, they a ...

8 weeks SEA

Posted by debbierey on 6/11/2016 at 11:28

My husband and I are travelling to SEA late December to late February. We fly into Bankok and stay for 2 days and then fly to Siem Reap for 3 or more days. From there we really haven't planned an itinerary but want to go to Laos, North Vietnam (spent 4 weeks in Vietnam but didn't make it to Sapa or Halong Bay) and possibly Malasia and Indonesia, also more time in Thailand. We're in our 60's and are back packing and staying at low to moderate level hotels and enjoy everything from beaches, bi ...

Itinerary Advice - 7 weeks in SEA! (Thailand – Myanmar - Laos – Vietnam – Cambodia – Malaysia)

Posted by Brightmaw on 30/4/2016 at 02:23

Hello everyone! After spending 6 weeks in India last year, my girlfriend and I are looking to spend just over 7 weeks in SEA from 26th November - 15th January. So far we have the following itinerary, and I would be hugely grateful for your advice. We travel chiefly by air. Where this isn't possible, we will travel by night, unless the journey is short. In Vietnam, we will travel chiefly by train. As the plans currently are, we will spend Christmas in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam, and NYE in Sih ...
