Help with SEA plan for June

Posted by yearn2travel on 18/2/2017 at 07:58

Looking to travel with spouse and 10 year old to SEA throughout June. I know it's not the best time of the year to be in the region, but we may just have to go with it. I'm used to planning everything, but since this is the low season, I was hoping I could step out of my shell and plan on the fly. However, we've never done that...and with a child in tow in the could spell disaster. We also plan on flying a lot to save time, but some flights seem expensive at $200/person. I wasn't sure ...

Advice sought on establishing a permanent travel base in SE Asia

Posted by laurencegoldman on 20/2/2017 at 20:34

Hi all. I'm planning to become ex-pat. I want to figure out best way to leave quality of life items, including the bag I bring them in. As I explore the region I like to come back somewhere and cook, have unneeded seasonal clothes stashed. Perhals !eave a laptop. Simple kitchen stuff. Health stuff. What comes to mind is renting a minimal flat yearly, or having a tin box I can stash safely. If someone knows a cheap way to have kitchen access when hopping around, I'd like to hear it. My focus ...

Visa applications for Cambodia and Vietnam

Posted by Francie1951 on 15/2/2017 at 00:13

Hi. We have travelled by air to Ho Chi Minh from New Zealand on other occasions and have always applied for a letter of approval for our visas on-line before our departure. We know this only applies to those visitors flying into Vietnam. This trip we are flying in to Siem Reap , Cambodia and then travelling to Vietnam overland. We have found by researching on the internet that we can apply for visas for Cambodia on-line before leaving New Zealand or apply at Siem Reap airport on arrival. ...

Posted by PathMan on 6/2/2017 at 01:37

Hi Everyone, My wife and I are planning to take a trip to Vietnam and Cambodia (20 days or thereabouts), and have found an ideal private tour package with Tonkin Travel. I have been looking at flights from London Heathrow, flying into Hanoi (or or around the 18th Jan 2018) and returning at the end of the trip from Siem Reap to Heathrow (on or around the 7th Feb 2018, ahead of the Tet holidays). My problem is that many of the airlines are currently offering discounted fares for 2017 but none ...

Posted by kel on 6/2/2017 at 00:28

Ahoy fellow travellers. My partner and I are currently planning a 6ish month trip to South East Asia, from Jan 2017 anywhere up early September 2017. Planning the itinerary to make sure we avoid terrible weather is proving to be difficult as I really want to travel quite slowly but I don't want to stay in one place too long and miss all the good weather! I'm hoping someone with a litttttle more experience than I, might be able to give us a few tips! So far, I'm thinking; Arrive Bangkok - 1 w ...

Seeing red over fake reviews

Posted by somtam2000 on 24/8/2015 at 19:33

From this week's newsletter: "So you can't throw a satay stick without spearing some news story about fake reviews online, but what is this fake review thing you speak of? Here's a primer regarding Jo's Dormotel in a popular city near you. Please note, these examples are fictional. Fake Review Level 1 Joe joins Tripadvisor using his email address and off the bat adds a review for his hotel saying it is awesome and that Jo is a really cool guy. Fake Review Level 2 TA will ...

Overtourism, what to do?

Posted by somtam2000 on 15/1/2017 at 23:55

From our first newsletter of 2017, being sent out in a few hours. Don't get it? Sign up here. "It is, quite simply, one of the most impressive and memorable sights in all of Kyoto." So read our Lonely Planet Japan guidebook. At the end of the listing, they added, "During the first few days in January, thousands of believers visit the shrine as their hatsu-mode (first shrine visit of the New Year) to pray for good fortune." "Perhaps the single most impressive sight in a ...

Advice welcome for 3 month itinerary

Posted by JCoco on 5/1/2017 at 02:32

Hey guys, I'm planning my first solo backpack trip to SE Asia between mid September and December this year. I'm trying to put up a traject through Thailand, Laos, Cambodia and Vietnam. I don't want a complete set up schedule but looking for something to fall back on so I don't have to look up everything while I'm there. I'd start with a few days in Bangkok before heading up north to possibly Ayutthaya and then stay 10-14 days in Chiang Mai to explore the region. From there to Laos and Lua ...

Dear ageing backpacker...

Posted by somtam2000 on 11/1/2017 at 20:46

A Vice wrap piece on some of the stereotypical backpackers you're likely to come across on the road... "Israelis are also a bit like this. Israelis treat travel a bit like an elaborate form of Tinder, whereby they travel the world looking for other Israelis. Then they find each other and gather in Israeli-themed restaurants where they spend weeks watching Family Guy and eating falafel and getting dangerously, terrifyingly stoned." and "In the history of the world, do you know h ...

Mapology: Our new map to Southeast Asia

Posted by somtam2000 on 16/12/2016 at 18:48

Hi everyone, Just as a bit of Silly Season fun, we've made a new map on the site which we're calling "Mapology". It lists everywhere where we cover in the region. You click on an icon and you get a pop-up with the place name, a photo and links to the Travelfish page for that destination (and to Agoda and if available for that destination). We mark capitals, national parks and islands with different markers (this isn't 100% comprehensive, but we're working on it) and we'r ...

Hangout in SE Asia?

Posted by alarcher on 14/12/2016 at 17:32

Just retired @ 60 so we have plenty of time but not heaps of cash. I'm looking for some suggestions for laid back destinations that are cheap so we can stay there between other "must do" destinations. I guess flash packer describes us but a comfortable bed, fan & ensuite suit us. Beach is good but we also like the moutains and rivers. We are Australian if that matters. Thanks in advance ...
