The Madang-jago was a gang ofBalinese colonial era travel facilitators who specialised in jumping out frombehind roadside rocks to bail up passing travellers - only allowing onwardpassage for a handsome sum. No cash? The alternative cost was an arm and a leg. Literally.
Dutch colonialists considered this a challengeto their authority and introduced a re-education program, horticultural in nature: namely testing the tensile strength of tree branches by way of bodyweight suspended by rope. Around ...
It is nice to read your update on Pemuteran . My wife and I were there for 10 day(!) in August. There is basically one reason to go to Pemuteran, to snorkel or dive at Menjangan island in Bali Barat National Park. The snorkeling off the beach there, however, is not worthwhile at all. The reef restoration project is a great thing, but there is essentially nothing there now, just mud. For snorkeling off the beach in Bali, go to East Bali, not to Permueran in the north.
As the update stat ...
A lot of people focus on Flores as a place to visit east of Lombok if you have already seen Bali and Lombok. However, I was wondering whether anyone has also explored Sumba wa and Sumba? Sumba gets an interesting write-up in Elizabeth Pisani's Indonesia Etc., while Sumbawa seems to be the most overlooked of the three - possibly with good reason? ...

I have just over two weeks left in North Sulawesi, and was originally going to spend a large part of that in the Togeans. But I have been hearing/reading a bit about the Maluku region and also the Sagnier islands to the north, and would like to check out one or both of those places. If anyone has been to either, or even better both of those places and could tell me which would be a better option, or even just any info/suggestions relative to those places, your help would be appreciated!
Hi there everyone, I just wondered if anybody has any information on things to do / itineraries for Ambon or any of the spice islands , information is quite hard to come by on line so anything from accommodation transport beaches etc .. would be much appreciated ,
thanks Jack ...
Details are still sketchy, but it appears a fire/explosion on a Gili fastboat this morning has killed at least one, perhaps two foreign tourists.
As we've said on multiple occasions, in our opinion these boats should not be used as they're mostly run by cowboys with scant thought for safety -- use the slow ferry. ...
I'm in the process of throwing a trip together to Lembata island, East of flores. Anyone been? Suggestions of places to stay, things to do? Things to avoid? possibilities of hiring a scooter?
Oh, any other ideas about travel east of flores would be greatly appreciated.
I'm planning to be in Indonesia in mid October for around 10 days. I'm well aware this is not nearly enough but it's all I have.
Because time is limited I was thinking to stay in an island not super difficult to reach but not too touristy.
All I'm looking for is a stunning beach to relax, do some snorkeling and explore the local culture in between swims!
Am I asking for too much? Does this place exist at all?
Indonesia has so many beautiful beaches that my search for a place has becom ...
The info on the embassy site mentioned in the FAQ section on TF http://www.indonesianembassy.org.uk/consular/consular_visa_type_free.html seems to indicate that the free 30 day visa is available at practically all airports since 2015 but I know for a fact this was still not true last March. ( Because I had to pay for a 30 day VOA in Makassar which is one of the "free" entry and exit airports on that list)
For my next wee jaunt in Indo I'm planning to arrive in Jakarta ( free vis ...
I'll be spending some time in Bali this October 2016 & would love to visit Yogyakarta for a day to see the Goa Jomblang cave & then off to Probolinggo to trek Mount Bromo. My question for you is this: will there be time enough to leave Bali & arrive inYogyakarta & Probolinggo all within 4 days? What would be my most efficient way of traveling between these areas? It looks like catching a flight from Denpasar to Yogyakarta would be the quickest route & then fr ...

We're two students from Switzerland and plan to visit Indonesia in the beginning of September. We would like to go on a Klotok tour of 3d/2n to see the orang-utans in the Tanjung Puting National Park, but the prices seem rather high. Anybody want to share the boat? We're intending to go from 6th to 8th of September, but nothing is booked yet, so we're flexible about the exact dates. Thanks! ...
While I'm still very early into this trip, here are a few pointers for anyone considering doing this -- and I'll add more as I go. The pics are a bit big - sorry!
GENERAL RIDING ADVICE
There are goats everywhere. Goats appear to have extremely limited road sense. Watch out. There are also dogs, cows and some buffalo -- all are smarter than goats. After rain, kids play on the road, so keep your eyes peeled -- they also kick a ball from one side of the road to the other a lot, which can be a bit ...

Hello Guys !!!
For you who doesn't know me, my name is Steve.
Well, i'm just going to be as quick as possible, so let's get start.
2010, was a fantastic year for me, because it's the time and the first time i'm going to Bali.
Bali is such a great place to stay, especially for the trip. The scenery of beach, mountain, through the village, and all, it's amazing. And don't forget to mention : Balinese food. Food in Bali is really, really amazing, with so much spice to complete them all. I rem ...
Looking for some insight on losmen style accommodation on Simeulue island north sumatra. I know sinabang will have have some of these, but what about other villages on the west side of the island?...Just not interested in USD$65-100 surf/yoga "resorts", rather direct deposit my rupiahs into the local economy. Western amenities not required or desired really. Ive got a bit of rusty Bahasa and a few budget into surf trips under my belt, so not afraid of a little effo ...
Am planning a roughly three week trip to Sumbawa at the moment, and looking for suggestions - as while I've flown over it numerous times have never set foot on it.
Broadly, so far I have Bima, Tambora (to climb), Lakey Peak, the breaks near Taliwang and very curious about the islands in the inland sea kind of thing below Tambora.
There's also supposed to be some great beaches down past the Newmont mine in the southwest.
Suggestions welcome & appreciated! ...
I'll be backing indonesia from the abovementioned dates. I'll be starting with Sumatra and then just head down before my time's up! Looking for people to tag along with. I'm Singaporean and I can speak Malay, so that should help us quite well along the trip! Do let me know! ...
I'm planning a trip through Flores for a month, flying into Maumere then drifting across to Larantuka then Lembata ( Alor Islands)
