Indo Snorkelling in January and February 2016

Posted by Malvis on 5/9/2015 at 08:04

I am not too familiar with Indonesia, but I have been trying to do a lot of reading and am starting to get very confused. I am an avid snorkeler and spend all my time in the water, and my other half loves lazing on the shore catching some sun with an occasional snorkel here and there. We are both in our thirties. Not into the party or touristy or crowded scene. We have been to Thailand 3 times, choosing less touristy islands (Ko Kradan, Ko Racha and Ko Hai) who all had very nice snorkeling opti ...

Mt Bromo

Posted by ScottDon20 on 23/10/2015 at 12:05

Hi all, The date is approaching that I am due to start my expedition to SE Asia. I am flying to Jakarta on the 4th Nov, and have booked my accommodation for the first night and will then fly to Surabaya on the 6th of Nov. From here I intend on visiting Mt Bromo and seeing the sunrise. I have enquired with a few companies but wish to get a vague understanding on how much it will likely cost. I have been quoted £160 - 3,250,000 RP which includes the following: Hotel - Bromo Permai/Nadya ...

I am visiting Bali with my girlfriend in November. For now, I booked the following: -4 nights seminyak -2 nights ubud thinking to fit 3 nights in Gili T for diving, or maybe there is a better alternative? Then maybe few nights in uluwatu? We are planning to relax in seminyak and then do all the adventure stuff. where should we go next? We don't care about nightlife or partying. Mostly adventure stuff, we'd definitely like to do: -white water rafting -diving -paragliding -volcano h ...

Bali or Luang Prabang?

Posted by valentinaforno on 15/9/2015 at 03:33

Hello guys, I will be in SEA for 2 and a half weeks at the end of December/beginning of January. My partner and I will spend 1 week in Koh Lipe to get out PADI certification, and I was looking into where to spend the week we have left. We've already been in Thailand (all the must sees), Cambodia (Siem Reap) and Vietnam (Hanoi to Saigon), so I was looking into Luang Prabang in Laos or Bali. To my surprise the flight prices for those destinations are the same from Bangkok, so I can't decide upon ...

3w itinerary advise

Posted by blackhawk60 on 19/9/2015 at 14:59

Dear Java and Indonesia experts Sorry for the long posting. I just want to be specific and clear. Don't let it deter you please. I (alone) will arrive in Jakarta on 23 October and leave again from there 12 Nov 0:05, thus 19+1/4 days. I decided I'll only visit Java. My main interest in desc. order are: -'struggling' (don't like organized tours so much) -cities (if there are nice) -historic/religious buildings etc. -culture, local people -eating local food + cooking class (possible?) -nature/lan ...

Bali Ubud

Gday guys, I'm new here. Wanted to ask for some advice planning my trip to Bali in September. We have got one month to spend in Bali and want to spend at least 2 weeks in Ubud because we have heard it is pretty nice around there. We are looking for some place thats relatively cheap (around 30$ max per night) but still not too grimy. We want to get the most luxury for the least money if you know what I mean It would be nice to have something that is quiet, with nice nature around. Do you t ...

Flying in Indonesia

Posted by somtam2000 on 14/9/2015 at 22:10

I travel a lot in Indonesia and nothing scares me like flying. We've lost friends there to plane crashes and I do try to fly domestically as little as possible, especially with the family. This story very neatly illustrates why. The fixation with glitzy terminals over safety features and training is absolutely maddening. The Pontianak example given in the story is SO Indonesia. ...

Another Plane Missing in Indonesia?

Posted by exacto on 2/10/2015 at 17:26

The report I saw says a search is underway for a missing Aviastar domestic flight out of Sulawesi with 10 on board. I hope it isn't true, but this reflects back to somtam's recent comments about how flying in Indonesia is particularly uncomfortable for him. ...

Advice on 1-Month Trip East of Bali

Posted by GratefulGypsies on 26/9/2015 at 09:31

Hey Travelfish community, I'm living in Bali now as part of a language program and I'll have a good 6 weeks off from mid-December to early February. Since I'll be here for 9 months total, I'd like to take a month of that holiday and get out to explore Indonesia east of Bali. I've got a ton of options and ideas running through my head so I was hoping some experts on here could give me some advice. Here's what I've got so far: Option 1: Fly to Maumere, then travel west across Flores . Most like ...

New solo traveller in Java looking for tips

Posted by Nickipea on 4/9/2015 at 07:09

Hi All, I'm looking for a little advice... I'm new to solo travelling (previously I've joined tour groups after arrival - this trip will be completely solo) and in the middle of researching a trip to Java towards the end of November and specifically on travelling from Yogyakarta to Bromo area and onwards towards Bali. I've already found quite a lot of advice on routes and transport on this site and elsewhere so that's fine. In doing that however, I've become nervous to the touts and cons that ...

Change regarding hostels on Gili T

Posted by somtam2000 on 1/9/2015 at 02:53

We've just been alerted to a change in the rules (yes, the Gilis do have one or two) regarding hostels on Gili T. To quote from the Facebook page of Gili Hostel Trawangan: "Out of respect for the Island rules we have reduced our bed numbers to 3 guests per room. As of today we have checked out 28 guests. We worry that these tourists will still not find the homestays that lack an on-line presence but we have done what was asked. We cannot change our name from hostel to homestay as westerne ...

Transport to Gili and Night Activities at Bangsal/Teluk Nara

Posted by leeliankong on 12/9/2015 at 20:18

Hi all! Any suggestions of which harbour we should take, Bangsal or Teluk Nara, considering our circumstances? We will arriving at Lombok Airport at 6.45pm and hoping to catch any 9am boat to the Gilis the next morning. I understand Bangsal is more stressful than Teluk Nara, but may have more lodging and food/drinks. We do not mind taking either the public or private fast boat to the Gilis. Just hoping for a good meal & drink after our flight and a comfortable backpacker-like accomodation ...

Important: Visa free entry to Indonesia

Posted by somtam2000 on 28/7/2015 at 05:36

Hi all, Just brining attention to a change we have just made on our Indonesia visa page regarding the visa-free entry. Apparently the visa is only valid for entry AND EXIT via the approved ports. So if you enter at Bali (an approved port) and try to leave from Lombok (not approved) you could well have problems. Anecdotal traveller reports are suggesting the need to pay a bribe may be required (ex Yogya), or you may just be refused exit (ex Lombok) and need to change plans and use an approved e ...

Sumbawa

Posted by amnicoll on 2/9/2015 at 07:35

Well worth a visit rather than passing over or round as most do! Alcohol is available but in most places very hard to find except in Lakey and other surfing hangouts. You will need the help of a local to sniff it out unless you can find a Chinese restaurant that sells it People very friendly through out the island. Travel surprising easy and the ordinary longer distance local bus from Bima to Sumbawa Besar was comfortable, not crowded and reasonably fast although the shorter services older and ...

Flores travel and maumere and bajawa budget hotels

Posted by amnicoll on 2/9/2015 at 07:20

A quick update on the excellent TF guide to Flores on this site Travel around by either ordinary Gunung Mas bus (rather than the ordinary local buses or their executive bus) excellent and very easy and priced between local bus and the share taxi. The share taxis are also excellent and very good value and only marginally more expensive than the Gunung Mas and unlike anywhere else I have used share taxis they do not wait until full. They will usually quote a departure time and with perhaps a wa ...

I'm starting to plan out my end of year holiday, and I'm thinking of taking the wife to Lombok for two weeks, in mid January 2016. So, what are the best recommendations and suggestions? We're after relaxation, exploration, bit of culture. Not into surfing or barhopping. Where to stay? What to see? What to do? Thanks ...
