I'm travelling from Manchester, England to Bangkok and then immediately onto Bali, this is my first time travelling to this part of the world so any help/information would be greatly appreciated.
I am meeting up with a friend from the US who has already got a place for us to stay in Gili Trawangan. How do I go about getting there from Bali Airport? I have read about fast boats but I'm unsure if that is the best way or even how to get to the correct port from the airport?
I plan to fly out ...
Hi guys, I am travelling solo to North Sumatra in early June. I only have 5 days of time, arriving Medan at 8:30 on 8 June and will leave Medan at 20:30 on 12 June. I am now struggling in the time division between Bukit Lawang and Lake Toba .
A few questions that I wish to seek opinion
1. Should I stay 2 nights in Bukit Lawang and 1 night in Lake Toba or vice versa? Which is a better place? Personally I like the wildlife and am excited to see the orangutans. But I saw people saying ...
Hi. Does anybody know if it is possible to buy Mefloquineover the counter in Indonesia? If yes, could you recommend a specific pharmacyin Kuta, Bali? And what brand names of Mefloquine are sold? Thanks.
PS.: I have been using Lariam previously with no sideeffects (so I do not need lectures on this popular topic) but it is not sold in Europe any more. ...
we are a couple with a 5 year old kid and we're considering coming to Indonesia for our vacation.
the period is october 13 to november 3, or october 20 to november 10
what island/place has the best weather?
what island/beach would you suggest?
we like clear calm waters with tropical fish, good snorkeling off the beach, backpacker bungalow accomodation, little villages with a few stores and restaurants/street food (as opposed to all inclusive vacations where you always eat in t ...
Taking you're advice about spending the perfect week in bali, a friend and I decided to do 2 nights in Seminyak/Kuta + 2 nights in Ubud + 2 nights in North (Singaraja probably) - to get the best experience because it's our first time there.
I need help about transportation and accommodation. What's the best way to go about it. Start off in south and go up and start off in north and go down? Since the airport in the south and we arrive & leave from there?
And where do you recommend is a s ...
Hey, I'm planning a trip to Bali for the month of November and really want to try a bit more surfing. I have some experience but am more or less a beginner and want to know what the season is usually like at this time of year? I've heard it's not really reliable conditions.
Should I look at going a different time of year for better surf or is it generally ok for newbies?

I'm just back from climbing one of the tallest volcanoes in Indonesia, spectacular Gunung Rinjani. We'll have a full write-up on Travelfish this week (in the meantime you can see some happy snaps here).
The trek took three friends and I three days. We started in Sembalun Lawang and finishing in Senaru, with one night spend camping on the crater rim, and the other lakeside within the crater. It is a truly breathtaking volc ...
Over the last few days I did a three day two night climb of Gunung Rinjani on Lombok with some friends from Jakarta, and here are a few pics to get your feet itching (or not!) While we'll have a full trip report on Travelfish next week (I only got home last night) my one piece of advice is:
Don't do a three day two night trek unless you are in extremely good shape. Do either the one night "summit only" trek or, if you want to see the lake and hotsprings, definitely do the three nig ...
I am travelling to Flores late May and would like to know what the situation is like with;
ATM's for cash availabilty
Which is better Visa / Mastercard
Should I take 50% cash and use card the rest of time
Or basically use my cards for all cash top ups
Will be entering bali and getting the free 30 day visa.
I read somewhere that if you get the free 30 day visa you need to exit from the same airport, is this true?
Also, we will be doing a visa run via Kuala Lumpur and entering again into Makassar Sulawesi. I read that a free visa is not available in Makassar and only a 35usd VOA is, is this the case?!
Hi, I'm a Malaysian, so I will have VOA for free when I'm at Yogyakarta airport but what I read from this website is, there are only 5 major international airports that I must arrive in and depart from and Yogyakarta is not listed. I am a bit confuse. So do I have to pay for my visa upon arrival in Yogyakarta airport or I don't have to pay because of my nationality? ...
Hi, I am planning to travel from Jakarta to Turtles surf break to stay for a week or so, I will be traveling by myself but with a couple of surfboards so public transport will be tricky. Does anyone know the price of a taxi? And how I can go about booking one? A couple of places offer transfers from Jakarta for about IDR1.200.000 but I would rather pick my accommodation once I get there.
A fascinating BBC Radio 4 show on the eruption of Tambora and the 1816 Year Without Summer. The initial descriptions of the eruption are just staggering.
Towards the end of the show they talk about how the related climate change contributed to population shifts in the US which may have given impetus to the anit-slavery movement in the US -- and perhaps the growth of opium cultivation in China!
Fascinating stuff - you can listen to the full show here. ...
I'm going to south east asia over the next 2 months and would like to travel to Bali/Gili.
What would be the cheapest way for me to travel to Gili...
Either i fly to Denpasar and take boat back and forth from Kuta to Gili.
Or i'm thinking if it would be cheaper if i fly to Lombok and take the boat to Gili then Kuta?
And then buy a plain ticket from Bali to my next destination?
Do anyone know what would be the cheapest way for me to travel this route?
And one more thing. Is it pos ...
Where else in the world can you find an entire beach to yourself, pick up shells at low-tide and gaze onto turtles from your balcony? The only sound you hear is the lapping of the waves of the in-coming tide and the early morning bird calls. Maratua guesthouse is attractive, simple and functional. Accommodation is in jungle bungalows, bungalows on a closed, inland sea and sea bungalows built right on a coral reef on the sea. The latter, although more expensive, are a wonderful choice. Remember t ...
