Indonesia - 2 months

Posted by altmtl on 3/6/2015 at 15:43

I woke up this morning and suddenly decided that I'd go to Indonesia for 2 months in Feb. I was thinking the best way to do this be to fly in to Bangkok (Jan.) - as it's the cheapest HUB from Canada - Get to KL - then fly to Java (Yogyakarta) then head to Lombok and Flores by land and sea... return to BK from Lombok by air. I know I still have a lot of research to do but how does that sound as a plan so far? ...

Tourism and Indonesia

Posted by somtam2000 on 2/6/2015 at 00:04

From this week's newsletter: The Wall Street Journal had an interesting piece yesterday on the numbers behind the tourism industry in Indonesia -- you can read it here. One factoid that leapt out at me like a bad satay stick was that the "average tourist" spends just 7.6 days in the country. So the 0.6 is no doubt spent jammed in either traffic or immigration queues in Jakarta and Bali, leaving a remainder of just seven days spent exploring an archipelago of, give or take, some 17, ...

The Frugal Surfer in Bali (Long term rental? Buy and resell?)

Posted by zoombackcamera on 5/4/2015 at 20:57

Hello, I'm going to be in Indonesia (most likely Bali, though answers for other islands might be interesting as well) for 1 month in May 2015. I'll be with another traveler and we'll be looking to surf everyday, multiple times a day. We don't want to pay daily rates on two boards for weeks on end if there are better options. What is the most flexible/cheapest way to have access to a board? Options that obviously come to mind include long-term rentals or buying and reselling a board. What's the ...

4 weeks in Indo - Bali+northern Sulawesi possible?

Posted by koombang on 7/6/2015 at 00:27

Hey folks, I have been working in an orangutan field station in Central Kalimantan/Borneo for 7 months, and as my stint comes to an end in a couple months, I have 5 weeks to travel, 4 of which will be in Indo. My ideal plan was to be a surf bum for 2 weeks/ a week and a half and then spend 2 weeks exploring some forest and diving. I am especially keen on seeing either Sulawesi or Papua since they are on the other side of the Wallace line. The first tentative plan is to hang out in Bali for the ...

Ramadan 2015 & Travel Problems

Just wanted to post this more generally as I know people have concerns about it, but there doesn't seem to be a lot of clear info out there. Ramadan 2015 will start on around the 18th of June and continue until around the 17th of July, give or take a day or two. If you are in Indonesia during this time, there are a few things you need to take note of. 1) Travel arrangements can be complicated by the extraordinary number of people travelling all around the country to see loved ones. This peaks ...

We plan to fly in to Lambuhanbajo and out of Maumere and have 10 days in between in September October. We have read of a number of amazing things to see including Komodo or nearby to see the dragons. Can we hire car and drivers to get from A to B as we travel east? If we hired a car to drive, could we leave it in Maumere? We imagine we would stay one night in most places with some for two nights if recommended. Suggestions and info please! Thanks, Pete ...

I have 5 weeks (with a couple of extra days at each end of the trip in Bali) and I am doing my homework now as I plan my trip I am not a beach person and just enjoy meeting and hanging out with the locals and aim to travel slowly through these islands. I have no worries if I am the only westerner in town and do not see other travelers. I am the sort of person who if they like the place might hang around a week and if not get the next bus/train boat whatever out. Part of me says fly out to the fa ...
