A sailboat library in Sulawesi

Posted by somtam2000 on 22/10/2016 at 01:16

Interesting story about a sailboat library in Sulawesi, which also points to Indonesia's very poor levels of literacy, saying: "The Perahu Pustaka (Book Boat) is sorely needed. In a recent study of 61 nations for which data was available, Indonesia ranked second worst for literacy – only Botswana scored lower. More than 10% of the West Sulawesi's adult population cannot read, while in many villages, the only book available is a solitary copy of the Quran." Well worth a read. ...

Trekking Mt Rinjani and visitng Gili

Posted by DShan on 12/5/2011 at 08:42

Hi, just wondering if anyone has done the trek up Mt Rinjani and can recommend any good trekking companies? Or can I book with guesthouses in Lombok? Planning to trek Mt Rinjani early June (I'm going alone, but hoping to find people to trek together with), but not sure if there are cheaper alternatives out there. The ones I've asked go for USD175 per pax for a 3D2N trek. Also, any good recommendations on guesthouses to stay the night before the trek? Going on a budget trip, so hopefully to find ...

Notes from 3 nights in Pemuteran October 2016

Posted by rolyboy on 18/10/2016 at 01:26

Just back from three nights in Pemuteran. Stay: Stayed at Sunia Loka which was a bit tired around the edges. Bad drains smell in the bathroom, "feminine hygiene product" not cleared away from the previous resident, gardens getting so bushy it was difficult to walk around without getting a face full of leaves. However, views to die for, lovely staff (except for being bullied by someone on breakfast duty because both of us in our party didn't come to breakfast at the same time), fantast ...

How to Avoid Bankruptcy at the Airport Taxi Counter

Posted by tezza on 11/10/2016 at 00:06

The Madang-jago was a gang ofBalinese colonial era travel facilitators who specialised in jumping out frombehind roadside rocks to bail up passing travellers - only allowing onwardpassage for a handsome sum. No cash? The alternative cost was an arm and a leg. Literally. Dutch colonialists considered this a challengeto their authority and introduced a re-education program, horticultural in nature: namely testing the tensile strength of tree branches by way of bodyweight suspended by rope. Around ...

My Guide to Visiting Pemuteran, Bali, Indonesia

Posted by peterrcole on 21/9/2016 at 16:41

It is nice to read your update on Pemuteran . My wife and I were there for 10 day(!) in August. There is basically one reason to go to Pemuteran, to snorkel or dive at Menjangan island in Bali Barat National Park. The snorkeling off the beach there, however, is not worthwhile at all. The reef restoration project is a great thing, but there is essentially nothing there now, just mud. For snorkeling off the beach in Bali, go to East Bali, not to Permueran in the north. As the update stat ...

Sumba, Sumbawa and Flores

Posted by stevenjmartin on 2/10/2016 at 04:32

Hello, A lot of people focus on Flores as a place to visit east of Lombok if you have already seen Bali and Lombok. However, I was wondering whether anyone has also explored Sumba wa and Sumba? Sumba gets an interesting write-up in Elizabeth Pisani's Indonesia Etc., while Sumbawa seems to be the most overlooked of the three - possibly with good reason? ...

Maluku or NE Sulawesi?

Posted by dezatron on 21/9/2016 at 04:14

Hello I have just over two weeks left in North Sulawesi, and was originally going to spend a large part of that in the Togeans. But I have been hearing/reading a bit about the Maluku region and also the Sagnier islands to the north, and would like to check out one or both of those places. If anyone has been to either, or even better both of those places and could tell me which would be a better option, or even just any info/suggestions relative to those places, your help would be appreciated! Yet another accident on a Gili Fastboat

Posted by somtam2000 on 15/9/2016 at 00:28

Details are still sketchy, but it appears a fire/explosion on a Gili fastboat this morning has killed at least one, perhaps two foreign tourists. As we've said on multiple occasions, in our opinion these boats should not be used as they're mostly run by cowboys with scant thought for safety -- use the slow ferry. ...

Indonesia- 10 days itinerary

Posted by lilianastahr on 22/8/2016 at 10:32

Hi all, I'm planning to be in Indonesia in mid October for around 10 days. I'm well aware this is not nearly enough but it's all I have. Because time is limited I was thinking to stay in an island not super difficult to reach but not too touristy. All I'm looking for is a stunning beach to relax, do some snorkeling and explore the local culture in between swims! Am I asking for too much? Does this place exist at all? Indonesia has so many beautiful beaches that my search for a place has becom ...

Indonesian free visa confusion (still)

Posted by SBE on 7/9/2016 at 11:54

The info on the embassy site mentioned in the FAQ section on TF http://www.indonesianembassy.org.uk/consular/consular_visa_type_free.html seems to indicate that the free 30 day visa is available at practically all airports since 2015 but I know for a fact this was still not true last March. ( Because I had to pay for a 30 day VOA in Makassar which is one of the "free" entry and exit airports on that list) For my next wee jaunt in Indo I'm planning to arrive in Jakarta ( free vis ...

Please Help Plan my Itinerary to Indonesia!

Posted by karmax on 13/8/2016 at 11:27

Hello all! I'll be spending some time in Bali this October 2016 & would love to visit Yogyakarta for a day to see the Goa Jomblang cave & then off to Probolinggo to trek Mount Bromo. My question for you is this: will there be time enough to leave Bali & arrive inYogyakarta & Probolinggo all within 4 days? What would be my most efficient way of traveling between these areas? It looks like catching a flight from Denpasar to Yogyakarta would be the quickest route & then fr ...

Motorbiking in Sumbawa

Posted by somtam2000 on 16/3/2016 at 07:22

While I'm still very early into this trip, here are a few pointers for anyone considering doing this -- and I'll add more as I go. The pics are a bit big - sorry! GENERAL RIDING ADVICE There are goats everywhere. Goats appear to have extremely limited road sense. Watch out. There are also dogs, cows and some buffalo -- all are smarter than goats. After rain, kids play on the road, so keep your eyes peeled -- they also kick a ball from one side of the road to the other a lot, which can be a bit ...
