Hi Any recommendations for Baluran, Meru Betiri or Alas Purwo? Looking to spend some time in one of these in September after Bromo and before heading over to Bali. Particularly interested in wildlife spotting but would prefer to have somewhere comfortable to sleep rather than camping. Thanks :0) ...

Hey there, My wife and I plan to be in Bali for the Spirit Festival held in Ubud March 20-24. However, the "backpacker" accommodation package is $1400 (yikes), which includes this: FULL FESTIVAL PASS 6 Nights Accommodation Simple Daily Breakfast Ensuite Bathroom with Hot & Cold Water Airport Pick-up Shuttle Bus My wife is a yoga instructor and is super excited to go to this, but I need to find a way to lower the costs a bit. I reckon we could buy weekend passes and find a good ...

Otherwise was thinking of staying in Seminyak for the final x2 days? If we stay in Sanur has anyone got any reccomendations regarding car hire? As the villa is north of the town I was thinking of using the car to get in and out of Sanur but to also explore some beaches to the north. Is there any seculded beaches worth visit ...

Headed to Maluku? Let Laszlo help...

Posted by somtam2000 on 30/1/2013 at 18:43

Maluku in far eastern Indonesia sees but a trickle of both foreign and domestic travellers. We've never been there ourselves, but Laszlo Wagner has, and partly as a result of his love of the region he built the website So what we've done, in cooperation with Laszlo, is added links across the Indonesian portion to that will lead you straight to the relevant sections on Maluku on All such links are followed by [EI] so you know you're on the ...

Couple travelling Indonesia for x2 weeks advice needed

Posted by slow_mo on 16/1/2013 at 07:01

Hi all, What a fantastic website and helpful forum. I used the Thailand forum last year and got lots of friendly advice from its members. This year I am landing at Denpasar on 27th Feb and will be in the region until 15th March. I was hoping for some advice around a suggested itinerary. I will be travelling with my girlfriend and we want an even mix of relaxation as well as keeping ourselves busy and entertained. We both hated Phuket so I imagine we would hate Kuta. As we only have two weeks I ...

6 weeks itinerary Vietnam & Indonesia - is this vaguely realistic?

Posted by Lettie2012 on 3/1/2013 at 10:27

Hi, Some friends and I are planning a 6 week trip to SE Asia June/July. We've never been to Asia before. I've been trying to wade through the information but there are so many places we would like to go! We're looking for a good mix of things - nature, culture, beaches, cities. We only have the 6 weeks and are students so budget is not limitless, but we're happy to spend on good things. Thinking about flying into Hanoi and out of Denpasar with Singapore Air. This is sort of ordered list of ...

Where To Stay For Chinese New Year (Beach... Reggae DJing...)

Posted by themuths on 12/1/2013 at 11:49

Hi, We're an American couple traveling to Bali for Chinese New Year (from Hong Kong), looking to relax during the day at the beach yet also go out some nights. Have been looking at villas with pools on Airbnb, so this is a slightly upmarket trip for us (we usually backpack), but we've decided to pamper ourselves a bit for once. I am wondering what other options there are besides Seminyak/Legian that have a decent beach for both relaxing and also body surfing [loved Varkala and Gokarna (Kudlee) ...

North-east Bali rice fields resort?

Posted by tezza on 9/1/2013 at 16:36

I'd like to stay a few days in June at a rice fields resort maybe north or north-west of Candidasa. I have stayed at Sideman - somewhere a fair bit north of there. I'm afraid I can't afford really high end places, but mid-range with a pool (or flashpacker) is fine. Thanks in advance for any suggestions. ...

Looking for a fellow traveler - Wonosari to Bejiharjo Village

Posted by notveryirish on 2/1/2013 at 01:50

Hello, my friend and I are planning to take a tour to Pindul Cave in Bejiharjo Village on January 15, 2013. We plan to use's pick up service from Wonosari Terminal to Bejiharjo Village as the village is pretty remote (my friend mentioned to me that no public transportation is available to the village). Our problem is that the tour requires us to have 4 person(s) in the group in order to use the pick up service, so we're missing two. My friend and I are on limited budget and we both ...

AirAsia introduce MANDATORY checked bag fee for domestic Indonesian flights

Posted by somtam2000 on 28/12/2012 at 04:37

I only found this out when I tried to book a domestic flight in Indonesia today with Southeast Asian low cost carrier AirAsia that there is now a MANDATORY checked luggage fee of 40,000 rupiah per passenger. This fee is payable regardless of if you have to check bags or not. When I quizzed AirAsia on Twitter about it, they said: "@travelfish Hi,pls note mandatory 15kg checked baggage apply to all Indonesia domestic flights. Details" MA ...

Snorkeling/beach time in Bali: Pemuteran vs. Gilis?

Posted by mattgrieger on 20/12/2012 at 21:21

Hi everyone, I'm looking to spend a few days snorkeling and lounging on the beach in Bali and am debating between Pemuteran vs. the Gilis. I'm leaning toward Pemuteran due to its proximity to the national park, mountains, etc. Both seem to have beautiful, clear water but I'm not sure about the relative merits of the coral reefs and the sea life. Are sea turtles equally prevalent in both places? I would appreciate your input! Matt ...

I plan on flying into Jakarta and then going up through Sumatra and eventually crossing to KL to then head up towards Bangkok. What are the stand out sights and features of Sumatra? I'm not that into trekking so I'd be interested in mainly relgious sites, cities, possible beaches (?) etc. Will roughly $30 a day be enough and are hostels available? Also is there a ferry available to Malaysia? Any information would be great. Cheers, Nathaniel ...

Lake Toba / Berastagi / Bukit Lawang

Posted by Sawf35 on 27/3/2012 at 18:23

Hi all, A mate and I are arriving in Medan at about 17:00 on June 21st and flying out again at 8:00 on July 1st, giving us 9 full days. We will obviously have to stay in Medan the night before we leave, due to the early flight, but we were wondering whether it is too ambitious to make it to all of Lake Toba, Berastagi and Bukit Lawang in that time? If we have to skip one of those places, I'm leaning towards missing out on Berastagi based on the research I've done, but I'm interested in hearin ...
